In the world of gaming, remakes, reboots and ports are generaly scored unfavourably due to them straying to far from what made the original great.

With Anomaly: Warzone Earth HD however this is not the case, ported onto the Android platform by the games original developers 11 Bit Studios, it takes what made its PC counterpart great and enhances the gameplay for mobiles and tablets.

What makes this title stand out from anything else on the Android Marketplace now aply named Google Play, is its spin on the tower defense strategy genre.

Rather than setting up your defenses around the battlefield, Anomaly gives you the chance to be the attackers trying to take down the Alien anomalies that have set themselves up around the world.

As you progress through the single player you unlock new units that have their own stengths and weaknesses that can also be upgraded, ranging from:

  • Vehicles which generate shields or supplies
  • The conventional tank and flame oriented tanks,
  • Or military grade vehicles which shoot rockets, etc..

Whilst it may be a port on a mobile device the strategic elements of the game are more crucial than ever.

Missions starts out as you would typically think they would, you are given a schematic of where you’re going and are verbally told what your mission will be.

Since you don’t control the units directly like a traditional RTS (Real Time Strategy) you’ll be required to set out a pre-determined path along the battlefield for your units to traverse before the start of each mission.

At any given moment during battle you can pause the game and change the path trying to avoid stronger units which will see you fail the mission.

With each fallen enemy you’ll receive a certain amount of cash which will allow you to purchase more vehicles if your current convoy has seen any losses, this option can also be accessed upon pausing the game to change your path.

Jets also randomly drop off supplies to aid you during your mission should you need them, these range from repair kits, smoke fields and vehicle decoys.

Playing on Hard difficulty, you will definitely need to utilize these items on the later levels when coming up against tougher enemies, so strategy and patience is key.

Be careful because whilst you can purchase new vehicles, supplies unfortunately are limited. If you come up to a path where there are a dozen enemies and you have no supplies consider your convoy toast.

The way the game has been ported onto mobile devices is flawless, graphically it’s as impressive as any other title released and sound wise it features a short yet impressive soundtrack which gets you in the mood for battle.

Upon downloading the clien you are only required to download a file of about 150-200mb which compared to other games is relatively small.

Whilst $3.99 may seem steep for a mobile title, rest assured you are definitely getting your money’s worth with Anomaly: Warzone Earth HD.

Upon completing the short but sweet campaign mode you unlock Arcade Mode I believe, which gives you a bunch of different maps to which you have to go from Point A to Point B.

It’s nothing spectacular and doesn’t add to the overall story however it will ensure you that your money and time are being put to good use.

Final Thoughts:

I’m a massive fan of RTS with the Command & Conquer series being amongst my favourite and I feel that this genre has been extremely lacking.

Now whilst it may not be a fully fleshed out game such as Warcraft 3, C&C: Red Alert 2 or Halo Wars it surely offers you a fresh take on the genre.

What I liked:

  • The intuitive touch controls blend combat and strategy seamlessly together for a great gameplay experience
  • Graphically it’s one of the most impressive titles to hit Google Play to date
  • User Interface is fluid and easy to understand again allowing for a seamless experience in gameplay

What I didn’t liked:

  • Relatively short campaign mode perhaps due to technical limitations
  • PC Tokyo levels aren’t present in Android version which is a shame
  • Lack of environment variety, as you’ve only got a few shades of brown to look at
