Download or Delete: Final Fantasy III review

A new app review series that tells it to you straight; should I download or delete? This week our resident Android game reviewer plays a gaming classic, Final Fantasy III.

A faithful part of a 20-year-old RPG classic that tries to show the new kids how it’s done.

This is actually a part of the Nintendo DS version from 2007 that updated the original with 3D visuals.

The story line is based around four youths chosen by the crystals to save the world once it is robbed of light but you probably won’t learn this until around an hour into the game when the opening credits start!

The gameplay

Final Fantasy III features well thought out touchscreen controls that are both simple and intuitive.

The gameplay focuses on fairly standard RPG fare such as collecting items and fighting enemies, although one stand-out is the job system, which lets people change class.

Final Fantasy III plays well for a pocket RPG, letting you dive into the game, save quickly then continue later. All up this offers around 30-40hrs of gameplay, depending on your skill level.

The verdict

Unfortunately, I’m not an RPG game player by nature, so I wasn’t surprised when I struggled at times to get into this game.

The graphics and controls are great but, the first few hours are quite hard and the storyline feels slow.

Final Fantasy III has tons of great reviews in the Google play store with a solid fan base, but for me it didn’t actually fulfill my mobile gaming needs.

Is it Download or Delete? Unfortunately the slow game play and the steep price (AU$16.99) weighed into my verdict – for me it’s a delete.
