GALAXY Nexus by Samsung – Android 4.0.4 Update

Starting from 1:00pm AEST, 21st June 2012 – Google will begin rolling out the Android 4.0.4 software update for the GALAXY Nexus by Samsung.

This is a point release and will primarily fix bugs, address stability issues and add some new features. Some interface elements have changed, but your day to day experience with your phone will broadly remain the same.

Full details of the changes in this update including technical details are available in this support article.

Roll out Schedule

The update will be rolled out progressively, so not everybody will be able to update immediately at 1:00pm tomorrow. The update will be released to devices, randomly, according to the following schedule:

  • Day 1-2: Available to 0.1% of devices
  • Day 3: Available to 5% of devices
  • Day 4: Available to 20% of devices
  • Day 5: Available to 60% of devices
  • Day 6: Available to 100% of devices

Downloading the update

The update is only available over the air either via 3G or WiFi and we recommend performing the download over WiFi.

However, should you choose to download it over 3G using your Vodafone SIM, the data will not be deducted from your monthly allowance.

If you are connected to any roaming network you will be charged at your applicable data rate.

Where to now?

    Hi Kieran,

I’m currently using a Vodafone Australia Galaxy Nexus that has been unlocked. Will I still get the 4.0.4 update?

    Cheers

Hi Lester, the updates are allocated based on who sold the device initially, regardless of whether you’ve removed the network locking. Short answer, yes! Just make sure that if you’re no longer connected with us that you’ve checked your data rate with your new carrier or alternatively download the update over WiFi.

I had a few doubts so I checked this morning at a Vodafone Retail store and My Phone is indeed a Vodafone Australia phone.

I hope the updates are worth the anticipation.

Hi Kieran. I was surprised to discover that I could update my phone on the 23rd, when only 5% of users would receive the update, so either I was lucky or the schedule changed. To be honest I haven’t noticed a lot of difference with the update. It does seem to be better at handling changes in the phone’s orientation though. Still, the anticipation of the update is like waiting for Christmas. Now that this update has been rolled out, how long do you think it will take for Jelly Bean to be available for the phone? Working in software support myself I know, it’s a never-ending cycle. :-)

Hi Simon, the roll-out schedule definitely hasn’t changed so if you made it into the first 5% I think your next step should be to grab a lottery ticket! The features and improvements in Jelly Bean look great, and it’s a good thing you’ve got a Nexus device as you’ll be among the first to experience the new version. I hope to have some news in tomorrow’s Software Update Weekly Wrap so keep an eye out for my post tomorrow.

Does anyone know if the 4.0.4 / Galaxy Nexus signal issue has been resolved before we all go ahead and upgrade to 4.0.4?

Not much point upgrading to 4.0.4 when the recommendations from the rest of the world in the last 3 months have been for everyone to rollback from it…

Hi J.S., the GALAXY Nexus update we’re rolling out is specifically tuned to our 850MHz network and our testing has not uncovered any issues related to signal or network performance. One of the fixes listed in the support article is “an intermittent issue when transitioning out of airplane mode”. Is this the fault you’ve seen reported elsewhere?

        Hi Kieran and J.S.

I just searched on google and found a number of articles about poor signal strength after a 4.0.4 update to the Galaxy Nexus.

Here’s an example. I don’t think it’s about the airplane mode.

        http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/05/gsm-galaxy-nexus-signal-problem-issue-android-4-0-4/

        However I also found this

        http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1610403

And it appears that the version we’re getting (IMM76K) is one version after the IMM76I where Google claims is a signal fix.

        Let’s hope for the best.

Hi Lester, thanks for sharing those links. Based on the information in there and the results of our testing, it looks like we’re all in the clear. Just need to make a quick mention that Vodafone can only provide support for approved versions of software (in this case, the IMM76K build for your GALAXY Nexus), so be wary of any instructions to reflash your device with other builds. :)

I don’t plan on flashing the firmware with other versions. No matter what the dev forums may say.

I did that to my iRiver a few years ago and it didn’t go well.

        I haven’t noticed any signal loss, I still get 3-4 bars on H (HSDPA – 3G)

The major issue I had with 4.0.1 was a bug where the wrong application would load when clicking on some shortcuts. This was solved by clearing recent items (sometimes) or restarting the phone. Hopefully that’s fixed in 4.0.4.

I haven’t experienced the problem on 4.0.4. If you check Cell Standby in Settings>Battery it will let you know the percentage of time without signal. Mines currently at 2% with 9 hours on.

A temporary fix (not confirmed) would be to download and use LightFlow from the market. Other then being really useful for setting custom colour notification lights for any app, it also can give you a notification on signal loss – This should also wake the phone when it notifies for network loss enabling it to reconnect and receive phone calls/sms.

Hi George, Salv has given you some great tips to try and isolate the cause (thank you Salv!). 49% of the time without signal definitely isn’t what you should be seeing with your phone. As I mentioned earlier in the comments, our testing did not uncover any specific signal problems and Salv’s experience since upgrading echoes what we’ve seen ourselves. Have you rebooted your phone since doing the update?

To get to the bottom of what’s happening with your GALAXY Nexus since the upgrade, our Help & Support Teams will need to do some troubleshooting with you. If you post a thread in our Community forums they will be along to help you out further.

Hi Kenny, no need to worry, it just means you haven’t received the update yet. ITL41F is the 4.0.1 build which shipped with the handset, IMM67K is the 4.0.4 update which is in the process of rolling out. It is a staged process, so not everybody will receive the notification at the same time. Keep an eye on the notification tray over the next two days (by which point the update will be available for all users).

Yep, the check in only makes your phone known to the update servers. It can take some time to work as you will only get the update if you are in line to receive it. It’s just a way of your phone asking for the update instead of waiting to be asked. Keep trying, at random times.

Smakz – it should display the green android character while updating. Sounds like it failed. Try forcing update again, make sure battery is charged.

    Hi,

I have not yet received the update and have tried a couple methods posted here with no luck.

I tried dialling *#*#2532546#*#* but nothing happened, I checked the system update setting and tried to look for an update.

I also tried to force close and clear the data from Google Services framework, after I checked for an update; the phone started downloading it. But when it restarted to install the android icon and a progress bar came up as it should, the progress bar filled up 1/8th of the way paused for a few seconds; then an android icon with a red caution triangle came up in the middle of the screen. I rebooted by pressing the power button a few times. I tried this method to get the update a few more times, but they all ended the same way.

I got the phone from Vodafone and am still using the SIM.

    Please help.

I purchase my phone from a retailer and is Australian stock with 24 months warranty. Voda couldn’t do a good deal… So you are saying that since I didn’t purchase the phone from Voda you will not update my firmware? Who will?

    I have ITL41F.I9250TDVKKB

Your comment “however if it’s generic, non-branded or imported from overseas your phone will follow a separate upgrade path.”

What do you mean “separate path”… Please elaborate?

Are you saying wait for Sumsung? Oh sorry Google? I’m in a love triangle between Voda, Google and Samsung. That means bad luck no update for you!

Hi Brock, I can only comment on the firmware roll outs for devices sold by Vodafone as I have no visibility or information on devices sold by other carriers, retailers or directly from Samsung. The approved previous build was IMM67K, which differs from the one on your handset. As much as I’d love to help you out, I just don’t have the info available. I’d recommend contacting your retailer directly to find out who will be providing updates for your handset as they would have the details available.

Retailer knows nothing and told me to call my provider.

Sorry what do you mean differs from my handset…. In your previous comment to Kenny.
Hi Kenny, no need to worry, it just means you haven’t received the update yet. ITL41F is the 4.0.1 build which shipped with the handset, IMM67K is the 4.0.4 update which is in the process of rolling out.

I too am on ITL41F. 4.01………….. So far no help from retailer, no help from Samsung and no help from Vodafone…… The phone is Australian version! So I ask my provider where do I get update from?

Hi Brock, I would love to be able to assist you further but we only have control over devices sold by Vodafone. In the same way that I can’t push an update to another carrier’s phone, I can’t push an update to your phone as it was not sold by us. I’m terribly sorry to hear that your retailer isn’t supporting you but I’m afraid it is outside of our control.

Hi Smakz, was your phone sold by Vodafone here in Australia or imported from overseas (often this is the case if you’ve bought it through an online retailer not linked with a phone carrier)? If it was definitely bought from us either in store or from our online shop we’d be happy to look into this for you.

Hi Kenny, no solid information on Jelly Bean yet! It’s definitely an exciting time to be in the Android sphere, though. Google have advised that they plan an OTA release in mid-July however the update will still need to be tested and approved before it is released on our network. As I begin to hear news from Google, Samsung and other manufacturers I’ll be sharing it here on the blog but until then we’ll all have to wait and see.

Hi trishan, as your brother bought your phone from Telstra you will need to wait for them to release the update to your phone. Even though your SIM is with Vodafone, the device was sold by Telstra, and as such will follow their upgrade pathway.

Hi Smakz, this certainly doesn’t sound right. So we can get to the bottom of this, I’ve asked one of the Help & Support Team to come and grab some details from you so we can investigate this further for you. Alternatively, if you post in our Community Forums they’ll be able to assist you there too.

      Hi Smakz,

I can help you with this. I will need some account information from you via email, so can you please send an email to online.help@vodafone.com.au with 222BSCGI in the subject field. It would be excellent if you could include your IMEI number (you can find this by typing *#06# on your keypad), and the information listed in our email guide.

      Thanks,
      Sarah.

Hi Kieran, only issue I’m finding with 4.0.4 is the lock screen lags when waking from deep sleep. This is especially noticeable when using pattern lock, the phone seems unresponsive for a few seconds then the drawn pattern fills in. Not massive issue but it’s there, anyone else?

Hi Salv, like a laptop or TV if your phone goes into a deep sleep mode it can take a few seconds to fully “wake up”. I’ll raise it with Samsung for improvement, but this may be unavoidable behaviour.

    Hi Kieran,

I am having a bit of trouble downloading the update. I have recently started to get experience the error message ‘package file invalid’ when downloading some larger apps and hoping that the Jelly Bean update will fix this.

Everytime i go to download the update, it says ‘update failed’. I can retry but then the same message occurs. I am completing the DL over 3G.

    Any help would be great.

Hi Justin, a friend experienced a similar situation and the only resolution we could find was a factory reset. Make sure you’ve backed up all of your important information before doing so.
