Guide to prepaid mobile broadband

NOTE: We’ve just launched our new data calculator! So if you’re not sure which data plan suits you, give our new data calculator a try.

A prepaid mobile broadband plan is perfect if you want to get online without the commitment of a long contract and want to control what you spend.

Mobile broadband lets you surf the web while you’re out and about, but in many cases, you’ll need to sign a contract to get the best deal.

But with a prepaid plan, you simply buy a starter pack that will give you a USB modem or Pocket Wi-Fi  device and some starter data between 3GB – 6GB.

Topping up your prepaid modem

Once your 3GB has been used up you simply need to recharge your modem to get back online. You can do this whenever you want at more than 20,000 places with Vodafone.

In addition, we’ll even let you roll over any unused data provided you recharge before your data expiry period (typically 30 days), allowing you to accumulate up to 39GB.

Vodafone offers a wide choice of top-up options to suit your budget; starting from $19 for 500MB ranging all the way up to $300 for a huge 30GB with a 365-day expiry.

Giving the gift of the Internet

Because your a starter pack includes the cost of the modem and a set download allowance, prepaid mobile broadband makes a great gift, that you can unwrap, activate and start using straight away.

You won’t have to sign a contract so there’ll be no ongoing bills to pay, and whichever lucky person you give it to won’t have to pay a cent extra to get online.

Choosing a mobile broadband provider

To find the best mobile broadband package, make sure you’ve found the right provider. The easiest way to do this is to do a little research and then compare mobile broadband online.

  • Run a address search to make sure you’ll get good coverage in your area.
  • Find out what kind of realistic download speeds to expect.
  • Then decide if you want a USB modem, which you can plug into your computer, or a mobile Wi-Fi device, like Vodafone’s Pocket Wifi, which lets you connect different devices, such as smartphones, tablets and laptops at the same time.
  • Work out what recharges you’re likely to purchase and compare recharge prices as well as starter pack prices

Alternatives to prepaid mobile broadband

If you like the sound of mobile broadband but don’t want to risk running out of data at a crucial moment, then why not try a month by month mobile broadband plan?

These flexible contracts do exactly what they say on the tin, offering a month to month commitment so you can cancel with just a month’s notice.

But unlike a prepaid mobile broadband plan, you’ll have a set monthly download allowance – which is significantly more than prepaid recharge would give you for the same price.
