How to choose the right plan or phone

If you’re traveling from overseas or moving into uni, one of the first things you want to sort out is your mobile phone situation.

These days the mobile phone market is diluted with many different options that can make choosing the right plan and phone incredibly difficult.

It’s important to make an informed decision when choosing your plan as in most cases you’ll be locked in for 12 or 24 months.

Choosing the right plan – What’s best for me?

For many students the impact on your wallet is most important thing. One of the biggest things to figure out is just what you need from your plan.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself:

  • Do I need international call inclusions?
  • Do I spend more time texting that calling?
  • Will I use emails or surfing the internet on my phone
  • Will Facebook, Foursquare, LinkedIn and other social sites be used a lot on my phone?
  • What kind of apps will I download and use?

It’s questions like these you need to ask yourself when deciding what you need.

Choosing the right plan – Look at previous bills

One of the best ways to figure out what you’ll require is to look at previous bills and spend some time with a calculator.

Whilst it may take some time it’s worth doing to avoid a very high bill, or what we call ‘bill shock’.

Choosing the right phone – QWERTY, touch or both?

The next thing to take into consideration is what you want from your mobile phone.

Do you spend more time on Facebook than surfing the web? Do your thumbs ache by the end of the day from texting?

Sometimes choosing a phone purely based on what your mate just bought isn’t the best idea.

Choosing the right phone – visit a store and try

It’s important to tailor your choice around what you’re primarily going to use it for. One of the best ways is to “try before you buy”.

Most stores will have live demo devices you can play with. Try out all the different features your going to use every day, try sending a text, watching a video or browsing the web.

The simplest way to make a sound decision is to do your research before signing on the dotted line.

Read through the terms and conditions and know exactly what you get and that it meets your needs.

These are just some simple ways to choose the right plan and mobile phone. Check out these links below:

I would say the most important thing to do when your in the store is to INSIST on trying an iPhone, Android Phone and Windows Phone. Don’t let the salesman tell you what you want.

If you want, add blackberry to the list too. But Symbian is dying, and (my opinion) is Blackberry will have lost most of its customer base in a few years.
