How to protect your Facebook reputation

Facebook on the mobile is great during our downtime. I’d like to share some of my ‘how to’ tips to use Facebook on your mobile effectively to make sure the online you in 2011 don’t come back to haunt you in 2013.

Study shows that 1/3 of people in UK visits social networking sites at work. This means that if you have 200 friends on facebook, 66 of your friends will check your profile when they come back to work after the break.

This brings me to my first point:

1. Be careful of posting NSFW (Not Safe For Work for the noobs out there) pictures from your mobile. That picture of your friend dressed up as a Snooki drinking a Mexican Bulldog is funny, but fight the urge to post it on facebook.

Your friend’s work friends might check facebook at work, and you might get them (or yourself) in trouble. If you want to brag about their triumph, use Facebook Messenger from the app store, and send a group message instead.

Facebook has 800M users and 250M photos gets uploaded a day – that’s average of 3 pictures a day per user. Bringing me to my second point:

2. Limit the amount of pictures mobile uploads to max of 3 a day. Your posts about your baby, bf/gf, pets, your lawn, and your holiday house might only be interesting with the first few posts.

Anything after that might be spaming their facebook.

Mobile upload more than 3 a day really should be uploaded in an album.

More than 1/3 of Australian employers hires based on prospects based on positive things they see in your social media profile. This is a sad reality, but it’s true. And my third point is:

3. Your status updates are really a snapshot of what you want to share with your friends now. Taken out of context and it becomes irrelevant. So be careful of your holiday statuses like:

  • “Parrttaaayy, going to get smashed tonight!” or
  • “My new Year resolution for 2012 is to quit and find a new job”.

If you’re going to use these statuses, make sure you remove them quickly and easily on your mobile by going to your Profile page, and do the following:

80% of robbers check, Twitter, Facebook, Google Street view. Check-in has it’s pros and cons, and my 4th point is:

4. Checking in to share your holiday destinations is cool and you can get recommendations from your friends.

But don’t ever check-into your house, or post pictures of expensive items from your home on Facebook.

If you’re going skiing for 2 weeks in Japan, I’d recommend not to check-into the airport, or hotels because people can pretty much guess how long you’ll be away for. If you must, set your profile on private.

Lastly, use the 24 hour rule.

It’s harder to remove someone from your friend list than it is to ignore them. When you remove them, things becomes complicated when they find out.

So even if that person’s your work friend, your high school friend, someone you met at a party, or even your grandma. Wait 24 hours to decide if there is any dirt on your profile. Then accept them on your mobile after that.

Hope these tips and tricks have helped you keep your social media profile clean during this holiday season. If you have any other helpful tips for others, please post it in the comments below.
