Good job Vodafone, did the update last night. A few things to note for those that are interested:

1 – the update was smooth and I didn’t lose any info
2 – The phone is taking longer to turn on and seems to be slightly slower
3 – HTC Sense 3 definitely looks better than 2.1 – makes the screen look like the one on HTC Sensation
4 – Some of my app shortcuts disappeared and I had to add them to the screens again
5 – The “Select your timezone” issue is still here
6 – LinkedIn for HTC Sense stopped working and I had to reinstall it. However, it is still not working well with FriendStream (all posts are marked with “No content” instead of the content itself).
7 – Facebook App requires an update.

OK, the LinkedIn app fixed itself after HTC did an update. All my e-mails are working fine and my HTC Sense account started working as well (it never worked previously).

      MAJOR ISSUE:
The phone goes haywire when trying to answer a call 40% of the time. I receive a call, drag the ring up to answer and instead of answering it shows me the unlock screen. It then shows me an android error message that something has stopped working and whether I’d like to force close or tell HTC. In the meantime the phone is still ringing.

Once I select “Force Close” the ringing stops, the phone goes into “airplane” mode, closes all network connections and connects back again. The process takes about 30 seconds and the missed call is not recorded.

With this upgrade I discovered the Car Panel app has vanished. I had an icon on my front screen to it but, after the update, that icon now appears with the Android logo. I’m not pleased as I’d handed my wife the Tom Tom and I had selected this phone as it included a suitable navigation app.

Don’t like it. If I can find a way to uninstall it I will, and I certainly won’t be confirming any further updates.

I don’t get the need to make unnecessary changes, like dragging a freaking ring UP to unlock my phone as opposed to the dragging down that has been used on my phone for 12 months. I’m not against changes, I just don’t see how this operation is a useful improvement to my mobile usage.

The 1 day calender display is useless for me. I have no need to see an hourly schedule that I need to scroll up or down to see events. The previous display of simply listing events for the day was far more useful. Perhaps allowing the user the option on the hourly schedule instead of forcing its usage would’ve been a better approach.

Why is it necessary to over complicate the snooze/decline buttons on alarms/reminders. It was so much simpler prior to this update, now at 4 in the morning I have to be awake enough to find a button and drag it to that freaking ring!!

One thing this smart phone had going for it when I purchased it was that the text messages didn’t resemble an iPhone talk bubble display. Thanks for jumping on the iPhone ‘look alike’ bandwagon.

Also, several of my app icons were removed and I had to re-install a couple.

Having said all that, I do like the updated Weather app.

      I agree with you Kelly.

I think the calender should be made to allow the user to choose what type of view they wanted when using the calender would have been better.

And OMG about the alarm, I’m struggling to be awake enough to be able to switch the alarm off.
      A bit annoying.

I can live with the above two, but I hate the new look text message. I mean the look of it is fine but what I don’t like is that previously on the old text message interface, you could see the message that had been sent to you and you could read what the sender had sent you so you could respond.

But now, the pre-emptive spell check bar takes up most of this space and you have to scorll up to read the original text message.

But I too love the Weather App.

Also hating WHATEVER now causes my phone calls to be answered with the dang speaker on. I’m becoming deaf in my left ear. Regardless of whether it’s a received or made call it seems to turn on the speaker as some sort of default setting. If anyone is experiencing this and knows how I can stop it please let me know…before I loose the hearing in my left ear!!!

Try turning off your phone and removing the battery. It happened to me once and removing the battery for a few moments fixed the issue. Also check to make sure there is nothing blocking the usb port (lint or paper).

In terms of the interface changes … you can always use another launcher on your phone. “GO Launcher” is free on the market/play store. You can even install “GO Locker” for free which works with Go Launcher and it changes your lock screen to many different designs. Also “GO SMS” is a free messaging app which I use, it is easy to use and you choose whether to show SMS’s in the conversation style or the speech bubble style.
You can always get free alarm apps which show different interfaces for turning alarms off as well.

        Anyway, hope that helps :)

Beware! I regret not checking out the rest of what the world was experiencing before updating to the new versions on the Desire HD

Crash, crash, freeze, crash… Oh, did I forget to say crash!

Just glanced across to see it reboot again with the Vodafone Logo I’m quickly starting to hate.

The UI looks crisp and fresh but as soon as you start trying to use the phone, it goes into freak out freeze mode.

The Available RAM has dropped down to a disgusting 100MB, which could easily explain the freeze effect, before vene considering any bugs with the software.

Removing the battery, launching in Safe Mode do not make any difference and it seems that a format and fresh reinstall is going to be inevitable.

Vodafone AU, can we have some answers because your global clients are in the same boat.

      Hi John,

You can use your 3G connection to download the update but if you do go over your data allocation then you may incur excess data charges. I would still recommend the WiFi option as this won’t cost against your mobile bill. I am surprised that WiFi is slow, then again it is quite a large update!

I completed the update without a hitch apart from the phone restarting a number of times (may have been part of the package update).
I like the new look and feel although I have the following issues:

    1) Answering calls: I have been unable to do so from locked.
Dragging the ring up to the answer icon does not work.
The answer icon appears greyed out and only the cancel call icon shows coloured (red).

    2) Alarm snooze functionality: I have been unable to snooze from locked.
Dragging the ring up to the snooze icon does not work.
Same as the call issue, Icons appear greyed out and dragging into the middle of screen just turns off alarm.

    3) Emails arrive in my Gmail inbox but I receive 2 notification icons that mail has arrived.

Any assistance resolving these issues will be greatly appreciated.

    regards,

    Billy

I recently updated my software and it has now caused issues with my HTC Desire HD.
When my phone is locked (99% of the time), I can not answer or decline a phone call – it simply does not respond and gives me a “focus quit” error message. However, I can answer the call if the screen is not locked.

I also have some minor issues such as uploading a photo to Facebook from my camera – which will no longer work.
I have called HTC and they said to take out the battery, wait 1 min and see if it fixes the problem.
It didn’t. So my only option now is to go back to factory settings .. otherwise I cant use my phone as a PHONE!

Highly recommend you DO NOT update your software to Gingerbread/Senses 3.0. Very disappointed with Vodafone for allowing this update to go ahead.

      ____________________

      1. Go to your facebook app and under synchronize settings choose to delete all facebook data. Afterwards log out of the facebook app.

      2. Go to account and synchronizing settings and remove any facebook entries.

Now your contacts should no longer contain any data from facebook and should not be linked with facebook either.

      3. Go to the facebook app, sign in and re-choose the synchronizing settings. Press “synchronize in upper right corner”

      4. Go to accounts and synchronizing and add facebook for HTC Sense and perhabs also the normal facebook account.

It will now start re-synchronizing everything and you have to link all your contacts again, but it now works

I managed to take a screen shot of my home screen even though all the forums I have read said in order to do that you need to root the phone and certain apps need to be installed, which I haven’t done. I love the new update, but it has made the phone incredibly slow. Every time i unlock i have to wait for my homescreen to load and it is getting quite frustrating. This did not happen before the update so i don’t think it is any user data. Am i the only one having this problem? And if so, is there a fix?

Although the new look is great, Exchange ActiveSync mail doesn’t work properly any more, which is more important to me than a flashy new interface and revamped weather app.

Push email is hit and miss now. Sometimes push email arrives immediately as it did before the update, and other times it can be 20 mins until the email arrives. Sometimes they don’t arrive at all and you have to go into mail and choose Refresh then a bunch of emails arrive at once.

The other major issue is that changes to mail in Exchange are not reflected on the phone. For example, if I read and delete an email in Outlook, prior to the update the email on my phone would be marked as read and moved out of the Inbox. Now, they just stay on the phone in the Inbox and are shown as new items. Sometimes, pressing Refresh will do something with these but more often than not they just stay there as new items. So now whenever I read emails on my phone I have to sift through hundreds of already read/responded/deleted emails to find what I’m looking for.

I’ve removed the email account and re-created it and that hasn’t helped, and resetting to factory settings has been suggested on other forums but that hasn’t helped either.

Here’s a bunch of other people with similar problems on similar devices since the same update but nothing seems to be being done about it.. http://androidforums.com/htc-desire-s/440528-push-email-broken-since-2-3-5-sense-3-0-update.html

Thanks Vodafone/HTC for making a critical tool of my business unreliable and comparatively useless. Since I purchased a phone with these features and you’ve now broken them, when are you going to fix the issues or supply me with a new phone that does what it did when I purchased it?

I have noticed that the ability of my phone to pick up a decent wifi signal has been severely reducedc in the wake of this update. I can no longer access my office Wifi (tech support people at work have said the problem is with the update as everything on my phone is set up correctly), and it also really struggles to connect to my wifi at home. Though it can connect with a reasonably strong signal (though still weaker than the pre-update signal), it drops in and out. It’s really furstrating.

Are HTC or Vodafone going to release a patch to fix this and the other problems created by the update?

Tried to download the update, but it just sat there for ages not doing anything (despite being connected to a WiFi network). Eventually discarded the download, but this deleted the notification. Is there any way to get the notification re-sent so I can try to upgrade my phone again?

The new update is great except for one thing. I non-stop receive location txt messages telling me in what location I am – some stages I need to press 30x cancel before I can use any functions of the phone. It is coming from #50…..??

Vodafone, how do I turn this off???

    Hi
I’ve been using the 2.3.3 android version. and i’ve been trying to update for many times and it doesn’t work. Some told me that you might need to try on safe-mode or factory reset, all these suggestions still not work. So what should I do? Is there any offline upgrade or any other suggestions.

      Hi Warut,

Take your proof of purchase with you to your nearest Vodafone store and they can physically assess it to see if this can be taken to our Service Centre for repair as a warranty repair.

      Hi C52r,

Thanks for the comment, sorry your experiencing this situation at the moment. From what I’ve been told the roll out of the update is still occuring so this can be the reason why you haven’t received it, but your friend has. If you’re still experiencing the same issue, hard reset your smartphone and try to update the software through your settings. If that still doesn’t work, you might need our service technicians to take a look as a warranty assessment – http://www.vodafone.com.au/personal/service-and-repair/the-service-centre/troubleshooting-guide/index.htm

    Hi All,
I would like to add to the list of critical faults of recent update that my phone started to reboot endlessly.
I found that it happen when I use my 32GB microSD card (imation class 10). Without the card the handset works fine.
HTC is suggesting formatting the SD card, but I cannot and I don’t want to do that daily.
When the card is inserted the booting takes minutes and back area of the phone where is sim and SD card is getting very hot.
Why the upgrade is not thoroughly tested first and then publicly released?
I think there should be a choice to revert changes if the upgrade is not working as it should!
I am getting close to the decision to root the phone and remove silly/faulty Vodafone/3 versions out of my handset.

I am so sorry I updated as well.

The updates should occur in two ways.

    1) Security issues and bug fixes.
    2) Themes and operation.

The fact that you can’t roll back really sucks as well. It’s as if they are hijacking YOUR phone and not allowing set it up the way you want. Looks like I’ll have to break this thing and re-install the previous version.

The new “locations” app that comes with the 2.3.5 update will not close, cannot be deleted and is constantly popping up like a virus! It makes me turn on my wifi and my gps (which drain my battery) to stop it from popping up every time i unlock my screen (and i mean every time!). Or if i do not turn on the gps it will constantly run in the background and use up my battery. I used to get a whole working day out of my phone and now i literally get a couple of hours! Its driving me up the wall!

I am also experiencing the problem with it crashing when i answer about 50% of my calls. I cannot believe that i have to send so many error reports a day and still nothing is fixed! Also whenever i do manage top answer a call or whenever i make one the speaker phone automatically comes on! My phone yells at me for making calls. Why the hell would this even be a feature?

My screen also comes on and off of its own accord all day and night. This is probably linked with the new locations wanting me to buy a lisence or something else to do with its constant popping up!

I also dont know if its just me but the reception seems to be worse after the update. Maybe my phone is struggling to survive with all its new dodgy software but in areas where i previously got 3G i feel like im now getting less.

Thats all i can think of of the top of my head but isnt this enough hassle that the update shouldnt have been released? Didnt they test it? Why is it stuffing up so much?

How can i uninstall the update and go back to the old system? I did a factory reset and the problems keep happening but its still on 2,3,5!

UPDATED – and lost my WiFi connection.
How frustrating! Now HTC wants me to factory reset my HD Desire.

I’m inclined to do this as the naked phone – despite the fact that the retailer I bought it from assured it’s set up for Vodafone (NZ) – was not ready to work within Vodafone network for New Zealand.

I remember I had to ring Vodafone and it took them nearly an hour to talk through all settings and do the changes to allow it working in the 3G and Wifi network.

I have downloaded and installed Astro and backed up all my data and apps. But I would like to find a better way, enabling network connection then loosing all settings.

If anyone knows how to downgrade to the previous version OR how to get rid of the WiFi error, I would appreciate your comments very much.

Has there been an update to rectify the problems that everyone seems to be experiencing?

Is the phone slower than on 2.3.3?

How much ram is free on 2.3.5?

Knowing this things would be useful for people thinking of updating.

HTC formally announced on GSMARENA that Android 4.* (ICS) will be available for the HTC Desire HD possibly in early April. Is Vodafone looking at releasing Android 4.* for the DHD at the same time or will it take another six months for testing and adding bloatware before Vodafone release ICS to DHD users? It will be useful know, my contract will be up soon and not sure if I’m better off upgrading to the impressive HTC ONE X or XL 4G or stay with the DHD pending improvements to the 2100 network.

Updated to version 2.3.5 when released.
