HTC Desire HD update

UPDATE: 17 August, 2011

A new maintenance release for the HTC Desire HD is now available for download from midday today.

Key features with this maintenance release:

  • WiFi performances improvement
  • GSM only option
  • Defaulting Automatic date and time to off

For infomation regarding how to get this new update, click on – How is the update being released?

The file size is about 14MB and it will be free to download for Vodafone customers.

ORIGINAL POST

Hi everyone,

Good news for HTC Desire HD users with the roll out of Android 2.3.3 ‘Gingerbread’ by HTC from today with a staggered release across all users over the next couple weeks.

This means, over the next couple of weeks you’ll get a notification on your smartphone to update to the newer software. So don’t worry if you don’t get the update today.

Details of the release

  • ROM version: 2.37.178.8 (Vodafone) & 2.37.861.8 (Hutchison)
  • Radio Version: 12.54.60.25U_26.09.04.11_M2

What are some of the new features with Android 2.3.3 on HTC Desire HD?

  • UI refinements for simplicity and speed
  • Quicker and easier access to the settings (Quicks settings tab in the notification bar)
  • Improved Apps management via tabs in the all apps menu
  • New camera settings
  • And some HTC fixes improving the overall user experience !

How big is the file update?

Package size is about 103MB

How is the update being released?

  • The release of the update will be via FOTA (Firmware Over The Air)
  • You will receive a notification that the new version of software is available for your HTC Desire HD.
  • You will then be given the option to accept the upgrade over the air.
  • It’s recommended that you connect via WiFi in order to complete the software update
  • Once the download (which will run in the back ground) is complete, you phone will prompt to install.  This will take a few minutes and during this time the device will not be able to be used
  • If you haven’t recieved a notification, you can simply go into your settings and find the new update.

We recommend when updating to Android 2.3.3

Due to the file size we recommend updating your Desire HD via WiFi connection

Why are we not releasing Android 2.3.4 like the Nexus S?

HTC have not launched any devices running Android version 2.3.4. Due to this, the HTC Desire HD will be receiving the 2.3.3 upgrade for VF Global in Europe, hence the same for Australia.

Tip for others: if you have the phone plugged-in during install, then unplug it to get the touch screen working properly again after the install. I couldn’t get the ‘screen locked’ to respond to touch until it was unplugged. G’luck.

This version has removed option to put the phone in GSM ONLY mode. Where I live is just 5k from Brisbane CBD still I do not get 3G signal in my home and I used to have my phone in GSM only at home to get consistent bars.Unfortunately I do not have this option anymore .

Having said that there is an AUTO mode, it is nearly useless unless you happy to get disconnected any time during voice calls. As it keeps hoping from 3G to GSM and when that occurs it loses the network for few seconds. AUTO mode reduces the battery life significantly as well.

Plz restore the GSM ONLY mode.

As mentioned twice by cool_ani HTC Sync no longer recognize the phone after upgrade. This is a major set back, no way to synchronize the Outlook contacts [unless you have a second phone whose Outlook sync works and you are prepared to move SIM around between phone every day]. No solution for calendar

In fact Windows 7 Device Manager no longer recognizes the phone ["The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) There is no driver selected for the device information set or element"] and cannot locate any suitable driver

Issue already raised by users on several website but no solution so far ARGH!

      Hey cool_ani,

Thanks for the trick, will try again.

I had the same annoying timezone message so I simply went Setting / Date & Time and unchecked the first (Automatic) option.

I don’t think it’s an HTC issue, I had a SonyErcison and signed an optus plan when moving here from the USA… got the same [set your time manually] problem, it appears to me aussie providers just don’t broadcast the timezone signal.

Since VF does not respond to queries, I had to call up HTC to get my issues sorted out.

They asked me to uncheck and check te usb debugging in Settings-> applications-> usb debugging and try connecting after 10-20 sec.

Fortunately, it did work. I hope this works for you, Also I am now facing a repeated notification asking me to set my time zone…yes it is annoying…

VF have not issued any release notes.

Same here with the timezone. My e-mails are also not automatically synchronising unless I go into the specific mail account.

I also don’t like the fact that when I type in a name for sms receipient, it firstly tries to match the name from previous sms receipients instead of the contacts. So, if the name I am typing was part of a group that I texted then the group names come up before the specific contact name.

All else seems to be good though…

I am not impressed with the excuse that “HTC does not have an Android 2.3.4 phone on the market so therefore we won’t upgradse to that yet”.

Downloaded the update several days ago now… i have come across a few bugs. As most people are suggesting the weather app can no longer be updated showing a “connection error”. Also, the stock mail app is no longer showing the unread message count over the mail icon. Personally, i have not seen any significant improvements in speed. If anything the loss of the GSM only option has caused it to draw more power while trying to establish a 3G connection in vodafones horrendous network coverage.

        Andrew,

I have been checking with HTC regarding the missing features in the 2.3.3 upgrade for the HTC Desire HD (i.e. the gingerbread keyboard) and their response is that Vodafone has customized the update and I quote…

“Please be advised that the upgrade that you received came from Vodafone because they are the exclusive distributor of HTC Desire HD handsets in Australia. We cannot guarantee as to why the Gingerbread keyboard and other features were not included on the upgrade that you received but it is possible that the upgrade you got was customized to work with the ROM (software) of your phone.”

Can you please as a Vodafone rep. reply as to why certain features have been removed?

And when they will be returned to the OS update?

        Thx

        Philbo

    Hi Andrew,

Since the update, mobile network keeps dropping out intermittently. The way to fix it is to go to Settings -> Wireless & Netwroks -> and uncheck and check “Mobile Network”. This work around fixes the problem 80% of the times. It’s pretty annoying.

Is this a software problem or just the vodafone network?

I received another notification to update and all went well so I am now on 2.3.3.

The txt notification bubble that appears on the main screen message widget is nearly black whereas the one that appears inside the message area is fluro green and very nice.

Q1. How can this be fixed so the notification bubble is Fluro Green again (as it was prior to the upgrade)?

    10am plug off from charger
    12pm call for 3minutes
8.30 – battery warning at red.

It seems like something is using the internet data too.

      Hi Tony,

Sorry for the delay I was waiting feedback from HTC. They said to me that the update should still go through, however in terms of the data required for download, it will not be zero rated if you’re using another carrier’s packet data settings. Meaning you’ll be charged accordingly by your carrier’s data pricing structure.

      Hope that makes sense :)

I’m having 2 problems since upgrading:
    (1) when trying to send SMS to some recipients, all I get is a ‘please wait’ icon for about 0.5secs then nothing happens. No message sends, even after i reboot the system or try retyping the message.
    (2) When using Advanced Task Killer, I can’t ‘Force Stop’ apps like I used to in 2.2

Is there a fix for these issues, or can I ‘revert’ back to Android 2.2? Have very much liked my Desire HD to this point but these hitches with common tasks are getting frustrating.

Please stop dragging the chain and put out a fix for the Froyo update. It’s been over a month and I’m getting very tired of:

My WIFI dropping out every few minutes (setting static IP hasn’t worked as a temporary fix)
Poor GPS reliability (worked perfectly before the update – now works about 50% of the times I need it)
Reduced battery life (I’m now taking a USB cable and car adapter to work to get me through the day)
Hopeless internet access (there’s absolutely no risk of me going over my 1gb monthly internet access because I can rarely connect!)

*sigh* Thanks for the update, its nice to have the wireless not flaky as all hell. Its also nice to see the automatic time and date working now, altho why you people don’t think Adelaide exists is beyond me (I guess I open myself to ridicule with that one). But the biggest fix I’ve been waiting for is one to fix the sms bug. A couple of the people in my contact list it affects are housemates. ie people I sms regularly. Its frustrating to have to CC myself every time I want to send them a message to make the sms actually send.

Ah well, I’m not going to look a gift horse in the mouth – thanks for updating what you have, it is appreciated. Just please don’t assume the job is all done now!

Straight after that I experienced severe connection drop out issues. Everyday when I travel from my home to work; my phone loses connection somewhere between Artarmon and North Sydney. Especially definitely near St Leonards, in case it survives before or after. Only way to get back is reboot my phone. Sometimes this happens even at my work or home. Something changed after this update. Somewhere I read that HTC has changed minimum radio signal from -70 something to -85 something? So is there a way to fix this; to get back to what it was before. I called Vodafone for help; but they instead referred me to HTC probably because I’m out of contract in Jan. HTC are too busy and call drops out after sometime.
I finally took matter into my own hands, cuz who cares anyway even if you are within contract. Not HTC, not Vodafone, or for that matter anybody. Anyway so I flashed my phone with the latest ICS from CM9. Baseband version has changed to some older one – something like 12.56. But the same severe connection problem still persists. Is there a way to fix this? Anyone? Who has suffered the same and fixed it? I’m now connecting 2G only to prevent connection dropouts. A smartphone on 2G only, not at all right!!!
Anyway any help will be much appreciated!!! Thanks in advance! :)

    Hi Andrew
Just bought a new HTC Desire Z on-line with Next G capability to replace my son Matt’s stolen one which I have on contract with Vodaphone. However when we put in the Vodaphone SIM it does not get Internet. Everything else works. Any suggestions?
    Cheers

      Hi Gorodn,

Thanks for the comment. The likely reason is that your Desire Z isn’t flashed with the Vodafone firmware, nor does it have the APN settings for Vodafone AU…

For more assistance on this, please post your question on our Vodafone Community Forum – http://community.vodafone.com.au/

Is this update an ‘opt in’ thing or ?? I’m running bog stock froyo 2.2 and everytime I try to update my phone by Settings –> About Phone –> System Software Updates I get the message “Your phone is up to date”. I’ve called up twice and had very little in the way of help, every time I call they tell me the update has been pulled or the update will be available in 2 weeks. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

to improve the sale, why don”t Vodafone adopte the idea of our neighbour countries: such as :
20 cents to call national fixed line untime call from your mobile phone.to any landline. within Australia.
25 cents per minute to call other mobile within Australia.
No call charges from vodafone to vodafone ( now it is in use )
1000 minute of calls includes for a set monthly fee, ie. $ 49 per months.
low cost overseas call ( 10 cents per minute to certain countries. )from your mobile.phone to land phone.

Will there be a specific phone icon to make it easier to check for recent upgrades to H.T.C? ATM… I find it a nuisance to scroll through my phone to find the settings and then go through everything just to find out if there are refresher keys/icons to see about upgrading the system on my desire….
