Nokia Lumia 800 – MCR3 Software Update

Update 25/07/12

We are pleased to confirm the Windows Phone 7.5 MCR3 software updates for the Nokia Lumia 800 and HTC 7 Trophy are scheduled to begin rolling out from 26th July 2012.

The release of the updates will not be throttled.

From 3:00am AEST, 28th June 2012 – Microsoft began rolling out the Mango Commercial Refresh 3 software update for the Nokia Lumia 800.

This is a point release and will primarily fix bugs, address stability issues and add some new features. Some interface elements have changed, but your day to day experience with your phone will broadly remain the same.

Full details of the changes in this update including technical details are available in this support article.

Roll out Schedule

The update will be rolled out progressively, so not everybody will be able to update immediately. The update will be released to devices, randomly, according to the following schedule:

  • Day 1-6: Available to 10% of devices
  • Day 7-20: Available to 25% of devices
  • Day 21: Available to 40% of devices
  • Day 22: Available to 60% of devices
  • Day 23: Available to 80% of devices
  • Day 24: Available to 100% of devices

Where to now?

        Hey Mate,
I just attempted the update and it didn’t work :(
I will try another few times and see how I go. I think it only applied for the Mango update but not the minor update.

Hi itsmoe, the update is rolled out progressively over 24 days. Right now your phone might not have been allocated for update, so make sure you’ve enabled the update notification in settings and wait for the pop-up to tell you your phone is ready.

            So Keiran,

If I read between the lines, are you saying that even though MCR3 has been released by Voda/Nokia/MS for my Lumia, it impossible to jump in in the 24 day queue?

The “disconnect” method also sounded like snake-oil to me anyway.

          • Kieran McIlwain says:

Hi Neil, that’s correct. The update is released to devices randomly, according to the schedule listed in the article above. This is roll out mechanism is a decision made by Microsoft and has been in place for Windows Phone updates for as long as I can remember. This throttling is to ensure that their update servers can scale appropriately to the load at the time.

Best not to think of it as “released” for your Lumia, but rather “approved” for your Lumia. Once the update has been allocated to your IMEI, then it’s released, and you can either choose to update immediately or defer the update for another time or day.

Thanks Kieran, I’ve been waiting and I have to admit, the Lumia 800 is the best Vodafone phone I have used to date, Also the N9 was a piece of Art but too bad it was stuffing up on me that I had to send it back for the Lumia 800.
Like I said previously I’m waiting patiently for the update and won’t be harassing anyone I promise :)

    Hi.
Is this the update that will implement “Internet Sharing” (see the Nokia Lumia 800 User Guide, page 40)? If so, is there anyway to update immediately. My data is going to waste waiting for the “Internet Sharing” functionality. By the way, good customer service would be to let people know where they are on the list.

    • Kieran McIlwain says:

Hi Māris, that’s correct, one of the features included in this update is the Internet Sharing functionality. On updating immediately, I’m afraid there is no way to jump ahead. The availability of updates is determined at random, so there’s no true “queue” to speak of. Further to this, the roll out is handled by Microsoft, so even if there was a queue we would have no visibility of it here at Vodafone.

Fingers crossed you’re part of today’s allocation!

My regular routine now every day is:
    1. connect my 800 to pc
    2. go to update option in zune
    3. wait
    4. sigh
    5. go back to work.
    When can this end?

Hi Ken, I’d say some time between now and the 21st of July. If you’d rather not go through that process you can go to Settings, select Phone and ensure that “Notify me when new updates are found” is switched to ON. This will notify you when the update’s ready for your phone so you don’t have to plug it in each morning.

Hi itsmoe, the update is still in the process of rolling out (there’s another 10 days left until it is available to all users). Random chance means that sometimes you get lucky, sometimes not so much. Rest assured that if you bought your Lumia 800 from us you WILL receive the update within the outlined timeframe.

Hi Glen, the staged roll out by Microsoft is designed to ensure the ongoing stability of the servers and make sure everybody gets their hands on the update. Just to be clear, though, the update is only available at this stage for devices sold by Vodafone in Australia. If it was purchased from any other carrier or imported from overseas you may be on a different update schedule.

Nope, well aware of that. I’m also well aware that this blog was posted on June 28. There’s 30 days in June, which meant it had rolled out for two days in that month. It’s not July 22. Two plus 22 = 24 … according to the schedule, 100 per cent of devices should be updated after 24 days.

Guess what … no update. As I said, I got my device from Vodafone, so that’s not the answer. I also know this is Microsoft rolling this out, not you guys, but I’m pretty pissed at this right now. How do I force the update?

It’s the 21st and I’m still waiting… I rang vodafone IT support and was told it was not available? Really hoping I can access it soon as I am hanging out for the internet sharing component. I was able to do this from my samsung wave and hadn’t realised, until it was too late, that my recent upgrade to the lumia 800 meant I would no longer have this function either wirelessly or through connecting to the computer via a cord. I pay for extra data each month because I used to connect to my laptop through the wave… Frustrated.

So as it seems no one was able to get the update in the first 22 days. I think this is a procedure Vodafone has put in place to get some us off their backs while they take their time to release the update.
I have checked the Navifirm for the update and it has been available for quite some time but nothing yet to be delivered.
It is very disappointing and shameful from Vodafone. I think im gonna have to flash my phone with the unbranded update and won’t rely on Vodafone anymore.

I feel your pain man, I think due to the lower number of Lumia 800 users they aren’t considering this update as important or urgent one and hence why the long delay.
I know you can flash your device with the stock Australian firmware especially when you aren’t really using the handset with a Vodafone sim. So that will avoid you having to wait for future updates from voda which will be pushed out straight to you from Microsoft on release.

Let see what Kieran has to say tomorrow.

Its unfortunate – but this is an extremely efficient way of creating alot of unhappy customers.

I have not heard of a Windows Phone Update that has been delivered in a timely fashion.

I’m not usually an Apple supporter, but there is something to be said about the their model – updates are sent directly to their customers, on-time, and regardless of carrier.

Started checking for update on Day One thought worst case be last day, still waiting. I was to sign of on a purchase of over 20 devices just needed to confirm tethering as this is a critical requirement. Should not have waited and just selected an Android phone. This lack of support and slow delivery does note bode well for the selection of Windows phones in the future.

Skydrive sucks, I’ve been using it since day one and to upload multiple files is impossible. But I see your point. MS should offer more storage to compete with Dropbox (I have 30gbs for free since I had the One X) :)

itsmoe – if you had been using it from day one, you would have been offered the free upgrade to 25GB that all SkyDrive accounts got.

Also – the space limit does not apply to office file formats – so SkyDrive is essentially an unlimited free storage engine for anything you can embed into an Office Document – and without too much imagination you can embed most things in a work document ;)

Also – try out the Skydrive integration with windows explorer – pretty handy to just drag & drop files into it just like it was a regular folder on your computer.

I also have an iPad that I use with OneNote to save my OneNote notebooks automatically up to SkyDrive.

On the whole its not a Bad Thing, and I can’t think of anything it doesn’t do compared to DropBox etc.

Hi Nick, the best I can supply is this – as part of globally-conducted testing, the requirement for additional testing and work with our Windows Phone partners was identified. This was to ensure the MCR3 update works as expected on Vodafone Windows Phone-powered handsets and that our customers have a great update experience. We’re pleased to announce that we have completed the required additional work and the update is now available to Windows Phone handsets sold by Vodafone.

As mentioned, some information remains confidential between Vodafone and our partners and I need to respect the commercial agreements that are in place. I’m glad to see the update is now available and I too am looking forward to Windows Phone 7.8 in the future.

I just got the update, but there’s still no Camera Extras app by Nokia in the marketplace. Other than the internet connection sharing, that was the only other update feature I was after.

Also, I got my Lumia 800 a month ago and my wife got hers last week. Hers has the Local Scout which mine doesn’t. How do I get that? There’s one in the marketplace, but it’s a 3rd party app, and not the same.

Yeh same here, I was unable to get the Camera Extras from anywhere, the Creative Studio has the panorama shot.

As for the local Scout, I had that too pinned on the home screen, took it off and never could find it again.

But the link below will help:

      http://www.microsoft.com/windowsphone/en-au/howto/wp7/web/local-scout.aspx

What you have to do is press the search button and then you will see the far left icon which you will have to press, once you are in it click on …. and then pin it to the home screen. :)

Thanks Itsmoe. I actually got it back by resetting my phone. I’ll remember not to move it again.

With the panorama camera function, I think the Camera Extras version works better, more like on newer Sony cameras like my NEX5N. The app is out there, and I found a link, but still can’t get it. Not cleared for this region I think is the reason.

So the features we’re still missing are:

    The Camera Extras app
Flip to silence hasn’t been included either it seems.

    Anything else?

Kieran, do you know if these will become available anytime soon? I know Camera Extras is available in other regions, but not Australia.

Hi Glenn, the features advised to us by Nokia as included in this update are listed in this support article. Unfortunately flip to silence and camera extras were not advised to us as features of this update.

Any further questions around what is or isn’t included should be directed to Nokia as they’re best placed to answer questions around their own software.

Thanks Kieran. I’ll see if I can track down someone at Nokia who knows about it.

By the way, the update is running smoothly. Although my wife had some issues installing the update. To the point where her one week old Lumia 800 locked up, and she had to take it back. They replaced it with a new model, which thankfully updated alright.
