REVIEW: My Nokia Lumia 800 experience

Well… What a pleasure it has been…

I was skeptical to start with, but after using the Nokia Lumia 800, the smartphone won me over.

What I was using before?

I have been an Apple iPhone owner and user for a few years now.

It initially took a lot of convincing for me to leave Nokia in the first place and venture to an Apple iPhone.

However after this review, I can say quite confidently that I will be moving back to Nokia!

The Stand outs using the Nokia Lumia 800

Below are the pros and cons I found whilst I was using the Nokia Lumia 800.

Pros for the Nokia Lumia 800

  • Fabulous Hardware, Feels smooth and looks great
  • Screen is super clear and bright (clearblack)
  • Fast and smooth responses for the touch screen
  • Everything is integrated into your contacts.. e.g. Phone, Addresss, Facebook, Email, LinkedIn all under one location
  • A decent camera, easy navigation,
  • Nokia music and nokia drive
  • Email functionality and Battery life

Cons for the Nokia Lumia 800

  • Screen could be larger
  • 16 gig storage only – no expansion capabilities
  • Camera at the back only not the front
  • Non customisable ringtones, ring volume could be louder.

All in all it gets a 4.5/5

To look at it is amazing. It’s sleek and stylish and functional all in one happy little bundle.

Yes, the screen could be bigger compared to some of the other newer phones, but I’m happy with it.

A bigger screen means a bigger phone and this phone is a great size, a perfect fit in your pocket.

It takes really nice photographs and decent videos without blur. I did find loud noises didn’t record particularly well and sounded a little tinny when played back but overall good.

The interface of the Nokia Lumia 800

The interface is very user friendly and easily customised to your needs.

Creating little groups within your contact lists e.g. family or friends or work colleagues and either keeping them separate in the "People Section" or if they are used frequently pinning the group to your front page.

The menu’s are easy to scroll through and super fast and smooth. If you can’t find something just use the simple search function.

At first I found the way your contacts are all integrated together a bit strange and wasn’t sure if I liked it.

However, it has grown on me and I now find it extremely helpful having all the key information on your contacts in the one place and at the touch of a finger time.

Want to send an email, text or make a call? Find your person and tap your choice. It is that simple.

Apps for the Nokia Lumia 800

The Marketplace does not have as many things to choose from as Android and Apple‘s App store.

However, what you do have to choose from is quality and I’m sure as time goes on they will quickly catch up in quantity.

I’ve noticed in some other reviews people complaining about there not being a HDMI link.

I haven’t found this to be an issue at all.
The battery life is great, no problems there.

I love the Nokia Drive application and the local search. It’s clear and concise and the best part is it’s free.

Who needs a GPS when you have one built into your phone.

Nokia Music is fantastic, there is a tab that you go into and it basically runs like a radio station.

You just click on the genre you want to listen to and it will play songs back to back free of charge.

This is great when you plug the phone in to the Aux in the car or are travelling somewhere. You can also create custom playlists of your music.

My main peeve even though it may not be important to others is the fact that you cannot customise your own ringtones.

In addition I find that the tones that are built in to the phone are not quite loud enough for my liking.

In saying this, this is something I personally look for in a phone and it isn’t lacking as such just not quite as loud as I would prefer.

Connecting it to the computer is a breeze. You just download Zune software and it backs up and syncs all your music, videos and pictures to your computer for you.

Zune also searches your computer and gives you the opportunity to load any compatible music/video or picture files onto the phone for playtime.

Final thoughts on the Nokia Lumia 800

All in all, I love the phone. It’s easy to use, looks great, it’s a complicated sophisticated smart phone made easy.

Hope this review helps some of you in your decision to venture to the darkside!

I’d certainly give it a go! Thinking of getting one for my dad now!

You can customise ringtones, admittedly the process isn’t the most logical. the track has to be less than 40s I think, then in Zune you set the genre to “Ringtone”

If anyone is looking for a great windows phone only game I recommend “Wordament” – free, simple and addictive. I know many jealous iPhone users.

To extend on the people hub I’m constantly amazed how useful it is. One example is that it uses facebook and adds “Significant Other” to people’s contact information. At first I thought this was kind of useless. But then I was at a party, an old school mate introduced his girlfriend to me an a couple of friends. About half an hour later we had all forgotten her name. Pulled out my phone and in 10 seconds I found it. Small but little scenarios like this I find really cool.

You can actually create your own custom ringtones for the phone, and the process is fairly straightforward. This article from Win Supersite explains how.

I personally recommend you use a program like Audacity when editing your sound files, rather than Windows Movie Maker, like the author suggests. Audacity’s interface is a lot more intuitive and easy to use.

Can this article please be updated to reflect the fact that you can change the ringtone?
