This update is approved, we are now awaiting roll out by Google.

Update 6/12/2012:

This update has now entered testing.

Update 5/12/2012:

We have now received this update from Samsung for testing. As mentioned below the update is based on the Android 4.1.2 (JZO54K) codebase.

We have scheduled testing to begin as soon as possible and will keep you updated both here, and in our Software Update Weekly Wraps on the progress.

Update 16/10/2012:

Samsung have now confirmed to us that the build that is currently under preparation is based on the Android 4.1.2 codebase.

We do not have any further information to share on expected delivery from Samsung for testing or when it will be available to customers.

Original Post 12/10/2012:

At this stage Vodafone is still awaiting Samsung’s submission of Jelly Bean for the GALAXY Nexus for testing and certification for use on our network.

We have spoken with Samsung regarding the delay and they have provided the following statement:

“Samsung are working as quickly as possible to address Australian market specific issues for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. We will launch the Jellybean software as soon as the software has met all our quality checks and is network tested and approved by our partners.”

Until this is received from Samsung we don’t have further information available on this software update.

All news regarding upcoming software updates is included in a Weekly Wrap posted each Wednesday. Any progress regarding this update will be shared in these wraps as it comes to hand.

We have already shared many of our customers’ comments and feelings on this issue with Samsung, however should you wish to reach out to them directly they can be reached via their Facebook page or any of the methods listed on their website.

This looks more like a joke. Android 4.1.2 is already out and there are rumors about an upcoming 4.2.
Samsung should have said ‘Samsung are working as quickly as possible to release the JB update for Galaxy S3 because we want to sell as many as possible and know that no one would buy S3 if Galaxy Nexus is already updated’.
I’m feeling more and more happy that I didn’t wait for this update and already rooted my GN and installed JB 4.1.1

My post to Samsung Australia – I hope others do the same.

“I am and will likely always be an Android user but have previously owned HTC phones until I bought the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. I am now committed to Nexus phones and love the pure Google experience. Unfortunately this has not been the experience with my Samsung Galaxy Nexus. When I bought the phone through Vodafone, the major factor of the purchase was both the pure Android interface as well as being the FIRST to receive updates in order to maintain the pure Google experience. I (and many others) have been waiting anxiously for the Jelly Bean update to the Nexus which has been released by Google for many months now.

I am aware the hardware differs slightly to international versions and therefore requires customisation to release it on Australian networks however it is the time frame in which this is being implemented which is the major disappointment. It is extremely disappointing to see other phones (not Nexus devices) now being released with Android 4.1 as stock while we are still waiting for the update.

According to Vodafone, they are unable to release any updates until they receive them from Samsung for testing, this is hurting the customer relations of both Vodafone and Google and I would hope Samsung would be more committed to their partners.

I am still committed to Nexus devices, but as more rumours are confirmed and as other companies are announcing their involvement in the Nexus program the more options I (and many others) will have when buying the next Nexus phone.”

Hell with you Samsung… The only reason ppl buy Nexus and not s3 or any other plastic you make is we love google and its vanilla version without the kies crap… Am sure there are majority of the ppl who use any android device other than nexus dont care whether they have gingerbread of Jelly bean..

        No Kieran,

Dont push the onus on to us. Thats what you’re for to find out the information for the general consumer of Vodafone. If they wont disclose the info to you “a telco who sells large volumes of their product” why would they tell us the general public? they wont and you know that, a lot of people have tried and just got template/scripted responses.

You are really losing your credit as representing us “the community” and people aren’t going to stick around waiting for Vodafone to get with the times when your competition is offering better support and a much better service.

As others have mentioned Vodafone is starting to lose there grasp on #1 customer service and as weeks go on your responses are indicating you’re getting frustrated with the repeated nagging for information.

        • Kieran McIlwain says:

Hi Johnny, I’d view this situation much more as presenting your options than putting the onus on you. Our conversations with Samsung remain unaffected by any you’re encouraged to have. We’ll continue to enquire about the availability of any and all updates, including making all our partners aware of customers point of view.

I’m definitely not able to comment on what Samsung are willing to share if you contact them, an individual conversation could be very different to what they share via a blog post. You’d need to confirm that with them yourself. Some customers may have received a templated or scripted response, but if the business has specific information to share, that’s a perfectly suitable way in which to do so.

I’d love to know any other avenues you feel Vodafone could follow to provide a better experience for you regarding software updates. We deliberately withhold information on updates until they are confirmed as being prepared for submission, as we aren’t in control of the manufacturers of the device we remain waiting until they prepare an individual update. Once we’re aware it’s incoming we keep you informed of the update right through the testing process until release.

For this particular device I imagine you’re frustrated with the lack of release rather than any aspect of our approach. But if there’s some information regarding our process we could have shared I’d love to know so we can close that gap.

Unfortunately we can’t dig into further details on why we haven’t received an update yet. There’s not much point in asking the marshall at the finish line where all the cars are after all.

Thanks for your post, and I look forward to any further details you can share on how we can help.

          Have a great weekend,
          Kieran

I will send an email and letter to Samsung Australia. But I just quickly posted on the Facebook page that Kieran forwarded us:

So as I wait for Samsung to provide Vodafone Australia with 4.1.1 for my “non kies” “non touchwiz” Galaxy Nexus…
Google has released 4.1.2 for the world to explore

So will we still be waiting for 4.1.1 that you promised Vodafone Australia a couple of months back….or will we get 4.1.2.

Though if you do decide today to provide 4.1.2, does that mean we will have to wait till August 2013 for it to be released…because that is what it looks like.

This is my response so fare

    Dear Samsung,
I am being forced to write to you to complain that I and many other Vodafone users are sick to death of waiting for you to deliver a Jelly Bean Upgrade for our Galaxy Nexus. We have been waiting patiently for Vodafone to roll this out to us after much fan fair many months ago when Jelly Bean was first released. We have been checking the vodafone blog every week to see if there is any progress. And Yet still months on NONE seems to have been made. We are even more enraged by the fact that you seem perfectly happy to roll out updates for all of the Samsung branded products, but not for the Galaxy Nexus. The whole reason most of us got one was so we could get the Android updates first.
So Pull your finger out and get the update released to Vodafone. I have spoken to Google””s android team and they are mystified why you have not been able to release an update yet. They say, and I agree, that there is no pressing technical reason why you would not be able to release an update. Certainly in the time frame you have been given you should have managed it by now, Even android has moved on a version in the intervening months.

    And their response…….

Thank you for contacting Samsung Customer Care.

I apologise for the inconvenience but we do not have release information for upcoming firmware updates. Firmware updates go through a rigorous testing process by Google, Samsung, and the Network Provider to make sure we provide you with a stable operating system that performs to the highest standard. If you have further questions you may wish to contact your network provider as some networks provide blog updates on the firmware testing progress.

We appreciate the time you have taken to provide your feedback and we have passed it on to the relevant department.

Folks, speak with your feet. Don’t like a manufacturer ? Don’t buy from them again. They’ll get the message. I read with interest Samsung’s history on updating it’s phone’s and it’s TouchWiz interface, and bought a Motorola. Ok, so their not speedy in releasing updates either, my other alternative would’ve been LG but they’re phone didn’t come to market quick enough.

On the note of JB though, my TF201 got the update in September.

I have a nexus s. But I manually flashed mined (even though Vodafone released it 1 week later :/)
To be honest with all the galaxy nexus owners out there… if you care that much about an update… manually flash it, it not that hard (there are many tuts online ..Google it)
Most consumers do not give a stuff/don’t know what version they are running. And if you don’t fall under that category of people, then you are most likely the type of person that will not struggle With following instructions on flashing.

I have actually just put 4.1.2 from a factory image (a little more complex to install) but nonetheless I have done it after a couple of hours of research. Again I don’t expect most people to actually do this. But if your following this blog, I assume you actually give a crap about updates.

To be honest – Vodafone hasn’t got the best network knowing that I came on board because of galaxy nexus and my three contract was getting over – now – I find my self in a situation where I lost many of calls and half way to the talking it cuts – it’s galaxy nexus that keeps me on board with Vodafone –

Vodafone is cheap and crap – so I would nt recommend to anybody to come on board and getting contracted for next two years

And to the Samsung – your crap about testing an other bs – most galaxy nexus owners wouldn’t have bought this phone. If Any other manufactures were available like on present for the nexus line up

You both should be fined for the time frame you have taken for updating this version and specially for misleading most of us to sell your stuff – I pretty sure even after all these months of waiting – you probably going to do the same thing to sell your upcoming crapy chip plastic – .. Not happy

Get you head right and do the right thing – chop chop
Release the updates we were promised

    Thanks

I know Apple was sued for their fake promises for g4 ipad.. why cant the same happen to samsung.. its false advertisement and deliberate ploy to sell their products buy not upgrading the Google phones.. The same applies to vf as well, but I dont actually hold them responsible for software updates as they are just the messenger here.. but Voda has to bear the burnt of customers directly!

I definitely support this. The ability to get updates as soon as they are released was one of the key reasons I chose the Galaxy Nexus. Too bad they took down their Galaxy Nexus page. I wonder if it stated the device would get fast updates there…

Vodafone should at least offer to extend warranties to rooted phones. This is terrible customer service. Did you manage to get out of your contract?

Bought from Telstra or bought unlocked with a Telstra SIM put in it? I only ask because according to Telstra’s 12 Oct update, they are estimating that they will have the update form Samsung on October 26, and will probably roll it out to customers in December. My understanding is that all of the Aussie telcos have the same hardware variant.

I really hope that the reason Samsung is playing sillybuggers is because they plan to give us 4.1.2 straight away. That’s more of a dream than a reality.

If this all goes much longer I might just flash stock yakju on my SGN (did a similar thing when Gingerbread was taking forever to be pushed to my old Nexus One)

Bought from Telstra (through a business account) with a Telstra SIM. Aren’t all Nexii are unlocked by definition? That, I presume, is another reason the carriers don’t like selling these developer phones…. but that’s a whole other story.
The only “special” thing is the phone’s boot loader is unlocked – required as when I got it with 4.0.1 the standard mail client would not work with Exchange 2010, but the 4.0.4 update fixed it; I manually did the 4.0.4 update, and never bothered to re-lock the bootloader. JB just appeared after that. Maybe that’s why – it bypassed some carrier junk?

Well, there you have it; a “simple” solution. If I can do it, just about anyone can. It looks like I must have put yakju-imm76i-factory-8001e72f on it around 23 May.

Here’s the instructions I used, based on some scraps of paper I still have lying around:
            http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25477039

Obviously, this was for the ICS 4.0.1 to 4.0.4 update, not for JB; however, it’s enabled JB updates. I don’t know what I might be missing not having a Samsung version (if anything, except the wait and frustration).

Being the devil’s advocate… Does it void your warranty? Does putting Windows 8 on your PC void it’s [hardware] warranty? Or Linux? I agree that it makes it difficult to get support, but it shouldn’t affect the hardware vendor’s warranty.
Anyhow, I don’t wish to get into that part of the discussion. I sympathise with all the non JB user out there; JB adds some really nice features, along with vastly improved battery life (in my experience); I get why you’d want it, and why you’re mad at Samsung / Vodafone for faling to deliver in a timely manner.

Hi GT, to be very clear devices that are not running Vodafone-approved software may not be eligible for servicing under the Vodafone Warranty. The terms of the manufacturer warranty may differ and you would need to speak with the individual manufacturer (in this case Samsung) for confirmation regarding their stance.

At this stage any build of Jelly Bean for the GALAXY Nexus is not considered as approved software, as to date we have still not been provided with a build from Samsung for testing.

If your daughter’s doing any travel while she’s here, she should carefully consider to which network she connects. Sadly Vodafone’s coverage is generally poor; we live in the outer suburbs of one of the capital cities (14km from the CBD) and we can’t use our VF SIMed handset in the house. County coverage? See the maps.
Best pre-paid deal I reckon is Woolworths $29 for 5GB data and a bucket load of calls, and 45 days to expiry, carried by Optus.
Sorry VF, not what you ewant to hear, but it’s my experience; despite promises of new towers last August. 12 months+ of not actually being able to receive a mobile call at home; we’ve given up and use the Woolies SIM and just forward all calls to the new number. Once the contract’s over we’ll move on.
Might have got a bit off topic there, sorry.

and can’t VHA just say “we are not liable for anyone who updates to jelly bean themsevles without our normal network OTA approved version”

which means the people who want to update, can, and the ones who rather wait for the VHA Samsung submitted version can wait…right?

Hi Jelly Baby, it’s not as cut and dry as you’ve suggested I’m afraid. We have not tested or certified any version of Jelly Bean for the GALAXY Nexus so any handsets running this software may not be eligible for service under the Vodafone Warranty. We can’t provide instructions as you’ve suggested, even with all the disclaimers in the world.

        THanks for your response

Even if a disclaimer mentions warranty would be voided if someone tries it? Wouldn’t that absolve VHA from any responsibility to the individual making the decision to try things themselves – only based on the fact that Google themsevles have officially released the files. obviously my scenario does not included “rooting” or “modding” as people do and “cooked roms” etc im basing it on the fact when google release things on their website.

How is it that the latest Nexus device is scheduled to receive the Jelly Bean update after both the older Nexus S and the Galaxy S3????? Kieran, you previously mentioned that perhaps the reason the Nexus S received 4.1.1 before the Gnex is that is has been on older software for longer. Well now they have been approved to receive 4.1.2 before the newest Nexus has received Jelly Bean at all!

As has been stated many, many, many times over the previous weeks, the Galaxy Nexus is supposed to be a pure Google experience. We now have the Nexus S scheduled for 4.1.2, the S3 for 4.1.1 and new devices such as the Galaxy S3 4G being sold with Jelly Bean, yet the Galaxy Nexus is still waiting. How is this a PURE GOOGLE EXPERIENCE?

Kieran, while I understand you are not responsible for this, you have a direct line to Samsung whereas we do not. While you are an S3 owner, (and presumably a phone enthusiast) I’m sure you can understand the EXTREME frustration of other phone enthusiasts/Nexus owners. Please, please SHOUT this message to those who might be able to fast track a resolution to this situation. As it currently stands, I will reconsider any and all future Samsung purchases due to this lack of support shown here….. and I’m sure I am not the only one who feels this way.

I have had enough of what seems to be a collusion by vodafone samsung and google. The responses from all have been uninformative and i am very dissappointed with vodafone for not honouring their own online adverts which were the main reason i went with nexus and a two year postpaid contract, believing that my nexus would be kept at the forefront of software with timely updates to the OSbfor the period of my contract. It is my understanding that this constitutes a breach of consumer law. As such i will be making complaints to consumer affairs and TIO, and my lawyer is currently investigating setting up a class action against vodafone, and most likely samsung. This is your responsibility vodafone and once again you have denied its your problem by blaming a third party. Add this to billing errors, intermittent internet access and dropped calls and i think most vodafone customers would have cause to sue vodafone.

Oh come on fellas. This has nothing to do with Vodafone. Samsung is currently holding things up here. What exactly would you like Vodafone to do, force Samsung to release a version of the software that is incompatible with the phone? If you want Jelly Bean install it manually, but of course there is the risk that it won’t quite work properly. The process could probably be streamlined, but I don’t think Vodafone or Samsung have been deceptive. The trouble is that Android development is much more “fragmented” (to use Steve Jobs’ expression) than the “integrated” iPhone approach. Multiple vendors (Google, Samsung, Vodafone) are working together in a serial fashion which is why it takes so long.

The difference is that Apple doesn’t have dependencies on other companies once the iPhone is released. They have one hardware platform to test when the OS is updated and they can test it in-house, so they can release the update as soon as it’s announced. I’m sure Apple has to deal with delays from suppliers too, but customer’s don’t see that.

hopefully in the future it will be clarified where the software updates will be coming from. I had absolutely no indication when i got my gnex that it would not be updated by google directly (which was very much implied by references to “pure google experience” etc). It was quite dissapointing to discover that this was the case (the updates not coming from google). I was trying to swap networks when i was convinced to stay with vodafone (10+ years as a customer i am pretty sure). This time as soon as i can get out of my contract about the only way I could be convinced to stay would be free service for the life of the contract.

So with iProducts, do they require special testing/updates for aus networks?

To those who think we are wrong to be upset considering the vast amounts of money phone companies make from us customers the least we can expect is for them to back their own advertising or where that is not possible offer an alternative of some kind as a customer goodwill gesture in the meantime. I think the real reason for the delay is more likely that samsung are re-jigging jellybean to try stop the evil fruit company sueing again. That said i havnt got what i am paying for and if i bought a faulty vehicle from a new car dealer i would expect the dealership to rectify any faults at their expense not mine, i would not expect said dealer to say not my problem contact the manufacturer. To those of you who are foolish enough to feel loyalty to a phone company, i can tell you they all are much the same regardless of brand, they are a business designed to make money and that is the bottom line. Customer satisfaction comes a distant second and has only become fashionable since acma brought in the new regulations. In a few months the acma regulatory phase in period ends and i will be interested to see how it goes over time with adherence by certain phone companies. You can get free pdfs of the new code and the australian consumer law via your browser, recommended reading for those who want to know and exercise their consumer rights. If corporations are not held accountable for their actions or lack thereof then the consumer is the loser. A few weeks delay for jellybean i could possibly accept, but several months is entirely unacceptable, by any measure its not good enough.

No if samsungs delays today, they got another week and the next update would be we will give you 4.2 wait for another 10 months. and we will still be using ICS.

Keiran if Samsung should decide upon release of 4.2 that they will upgrade to that rather than 4.1.2 what then?
The problem is that one can assume very little if any work had been done if they dropped the 4.1 update so readily and that leads one to think maybe they are in the same position with the current update.

I believe that us T nexus users will have to settle for how long is a piece of string as thisnis the only answer that makes sense in regards to the timing of the update.

In the last few months I have encouraged others to purchase nexus variants but I’m thinking that from now on Samsung will be one that I will warn others to stay away from if it is a T variant.

Anyway thanks for the weekly update even if doesn’t please me.

Google released the original factory Jelly Bean images (4.1.1) with GSM/HSPA optimization on July 30th. JULY 30TH. IT’S OCTOBER 25TH. After months of waiting I finally put Jelly bean on my Galaxy Nexus myself, and more recently got the upgrade to 4.1.2. It’s been working flawlessly ever since I put it on there on Vodafone’s network. So, what are all these ‘quality and network tests’? Samsung took so INCREDIBLY long to get 4.1.1 out that they gave up and just went to 4.1.2 – that’s straight up embarrassing. How could this testing take so much time to get a release finalized when the stock image already works perfectly? I honestly don’t understand what this whole process is about. This is a major screw up and a complete demonstration of Samsung’s disorganization.

Nexus devices are meant to get software priority. THAT’S THE WHOLE IDEA BEHIND THEM. THAT’S WHY PEOPLE BUY INTO THEM AND SIGN UP FOR 2 YEAR CONTRACTS. LIKE ME. To make things worse, Jelly bean for the Galaxy S3 is already in testing under Vodafone. The 100% shows where Samsung are putting their priorities and it is so disrespectful to their Nexus-buying customers. I’m so glad that I’m able to put Jelly bean on my Nexus myself, and am especially happy that LG will be making the next Nexus. Samsung used to be an impressive company to me, but I will never be buying any of their mobile products ever again. What an absolute joke. You really, really messed up here Samsung.

Whoever is in charge of this process in some office somewhere in godknowswhere needs to be fired, preferably removed from the face of the earth for this obscene screw up, never to touch mobile development ever again. You’re not ‘working as quickly as possible’. You’re sitting on your A***** neglecting your customers. This is almost legitimate false advertising. I’m trying so hard to vent my frustration and disappointment in this post, but even all I’ve said doesn’t express it. You SUCK Samsung. I wouldn’t touch you with a 10 foot pole anymore.

As I have mentioned in my earlier posts around 2 months ago, I strongly believe that Samsung is playing dirty here. They are holding up the GN update so that they could release the GS3 update sooner than for GN. If GN has the update but GS3 is running an older version, who would buy that?
And not surprisingly, this is what really is happening. GS3 update received by Voda and is currently being tested, but no news for GN yet!!!

Until Nokia improves I will not be purchasing another phone from them.

When it comes to country requirements, manufactures (Samsung, etc) should know the requirements from the previous updates and check for new requirements which all telco’s should provide regularly. Seems to me diligence isn’t being done

As a software developer myself, I’m aware that updates can’t always just happen just because new version has been released by upstream developers, but I’m particularly appalled by the lack of communication on what’s holding up an update process.

Every communication regarding to updates from both Vodafone and Samsung has merely been a variation of “Please wait some more”. This is not good communication, it makes it seems like nobody knows anything. The wait will be much more acceptable if customers are made aware of technical or regulatory issues that mandate certain changes necessary. At the very least, we all can make our own expectations on the progress of the update without anyone having to promise any expected release date (which is never easy to estimate).

I believe Vodafone and/or Samsung should have weekly or biweekly blog update on what remains to be done and any new issues encountered along the update process. Vodafone and Samsung should open up their development process. Communicating these updates will also allow customers generate feedback on what we think is or is not important.

It is important for development teams to recognize that customers are a major stakeholder, and therefore have the right to know the progress of development.

Don’t keep us in the dark!

Hi Steve, the Nexus S was also made by Samsung and it was updated to 4.1.1 and 4.1.2 within a few days of its global counterparts. At this stage we’re still to receive the update from Samsung, so even if we wanted to hold it up (we don’t), we don’t physically have the update (so we can’t). We’re all as eager as you to see the update roll out but until it’s delivered to us by Samsung our hands are tied.

That’s because the Nexus S version you sold was the international version not a “T” variant GNex. The updates came straight from Google in which case you were able to test them and approve it for Google to push. Samsung was completely by-passed. Samsung are more interested in furthering their more popular mass appeal handsets which is in their economic interests. From the carriers point of view, having a few disgruntled GNex users is no threat to their bottom line in the scheme of things.
In fairness, it is shown that if Voda does have something to work with it will be quick to expedite the update. However, GNex’s shouldn’t have been marketed as being top dog in the update priority queue. While it is clear Samsung have been dragging their feet, Vodafone as on-sellers of the unit cannot be without responsibility.
The Nexus S baseband works fine on Voda’s network (which is 850 overlaid over 2100) and it is no surprise that the stock yakju international GSM/UMTS baseband works fine as well on GNex.
For all practical purposes, having a GNex specially “tuned” for Vodafone’s 850 network is a red herring and gives the user no practical benefits or advantage over using the stock baseband. This is considering that the Nexus S international baseband was “approved” by Voda and both the Nexus S and GNex have ability for 850 and 2100 UMTS by default straight out of the box. It then follows that the GNex on stock baseband will work just fine on your network. Indeed that has been my experience. I have stock yakju on my GNex, it works just great your network and I get my updates straight from Google.
International travellers using their handsets on your network don’t need special 850 basebands to run their phones satisfactorily on your network if their handsets are current models given modern handsets are tri, quad and penta band and covers the UMTS bands available by Telstra and Vodafone.
From an official standpoint, I can understand how you do not sanction flashing non “approved” firmware. However, yakju is the “approved” firmware from vendor Google flashed on hardware it was designed for (GNex).
I’ve heard it said, flashing non “approved” firmwares could possibly compromise your network and also talk about “regulatory requirements”. How is this policed? How do you stop people flashing their phones and not using them on your network if such a practice was potentially detrimental to the network? People will buy or bring in hansets from overseas to use on your network. Does that practice compromise the network? Me thinks the network is more robust than that. If the threat was indeed real then more would be done to counter it.
Conclusion: For all PRACTICAL and FUNCTIONAL pruposes, the benefits of the “T” variant baseband over the stock YAKJU baseband are ZERO and side-effects of sucessfully flashing YAKJU on GNex and using on Vodafone’s network, ZERO.
ZERO effect on breaking “Australian regulatory requirements” or potenially compromising the Vodafone network. Red -herrings, moot points non-issues for all practical purposes from the practice of flashing a GNex to YAKJU build.
          Cheers.

we ever gonna get another update on this? Like many here the reason for choosing the nexus was the promised “quick” upgrade process that was all over its marketing campaign. This whole experience has made me think less of Samsung and Vodafone for right or wrong. Looking like microsoft are back in the game now might switch over next upgrade.

    Here is my comment from Vodafone Google post today on this issue;

The wait for upgrade of Galaxy Nexus is inexcusable – Vodafone marketed a phone as the pure Google experience, be the first to get updates direct from Google etc. This was clearly false & misleading if people purchased the Galaxy Nexus on this basis, as they are blaming Samsung for the delay – this should have been disclosed at point of sale. My wife bought the GNex from Vodafone on this basis and is still waiting…. unhappily.

I see a potential ACCC issue to be pursued. But it will be a waste of time – simple solution is to unlock bootloader, download stock 4.1.2 rom from Google and be free of carrier or manufacturer interference forever. Update to 4.2 will then follow OTA when available directly from Google. Guess only consolation is that Optus is even worse – at least Vodafone keeps communicating with their customers. My originally Optus Gnex has been unlocked since Google IO announcement and received all updates quickly.

The outcome of this is I will NEVER buy a handset through a carrier again. From later this month go to Google Play and purchase an unlocked pure Android 4.2 Nexus 4 phone that will get direct updates. And then use any carrier that offers a competitive service.

I dont understand, do you want to lose out on our hard earnt dollars to your competitors?

I understand that we have a different firmware on the phone but the actual hardware of the phone remains the same and the same software should work flawlessly.
Cant believe that samsung could modify the vanila 4.1.1 to suit Galaxy s3, followed by vodafone conducting 3 rounds of testing and approved for OTA push but they couldnt provide the same vanila version to vodafone for testing.

I Changed the firmware from yakjudv (aus specific) to yakju (international)
Immidiately after that got the notification to update the software to 4.1.1 followed by another notification to update the software to 4.1.2 (what i m currently using) followed by the notification to update the software to 4.2 however since it is buggy, i have postponed to update till google fixes the bugs and then would update the software to the fixed 4.2.1 or 4.2.2.

The process of changing the firmware is very short – about 30 mins if you have a lot to back up.
Very happy now that I am actually getting software updates.

    So Kieran…
its a month down the track from the last time you were able to give us info that Samsung were promising 4.1.2 and that was presumably because we destroyed their Facebook page. You say there is no new info, nothing you can give us about dates. At this point the Nexus that we purchased because of the Google update promise is looking like seriously broken promise. To add insult to that broken promise is the SIII getting updated on Monday 26NOV. Seriously we are now in a situation where the LAST device updated is the Nexus, it should be the first.
Please convey to Samsung just how much damage they are doing to their brand, and the Google Nexus brand with this behaviour. If this is the way I am going to be treated as a customer by Samsung they can DiaF.
Do we need to organise DDOS on Samsung Facebook again to get more action?
Should I just give up and root my phone?
Is it going to be another 6 months to get 4.2? Will I ever get 4.2?
Will Samsung simply say DILIGAF now that they don’t have the Nexus license?
Does anyone in Samsung that you are talking to actually care AND have the ability to do anything about it?
Because at the moment it really feels like we are being completely effed over for believing in Vodaphone, Samsung and Google to be able to live up to their promises.

After fruitless railling against the inequity of not receiving what i was promised ie gnex os updates as soon as released, i decided to manually upgrade rather than chewin a hole in my guts waiting for nothin to happen. Wasnt too hard for a noob like me, i used xda galaxy nexus toolkit v9, pretty much does it all for ya, if you are locked into a telco your phones variant, in settings – about phone – baseband version, your variant will have a t on the end and you will need to change build via stock google rom from imm76k to imm76i, so phone becomes international build, which is necessary for jellybean upgrade and future ota updates as they roll out from google, from there you can update to jellybean 4.1.2, then to ota 4.2, can be done within toolkit. Glad i bit the bullet and upgraded, jb heaps better than ics, so buttery lol, just make sure you do full backups as an insurance if you run into issues, i softbrickd my fone a few times but was ok after battery out reset. If you are already on 4.2 you will notice no developer options in settings, to enable usb debugging so you can re-root phone, press on build number 7 times and developer options will become available. Good luck and when in doubt google. If you plan to wait for your telco to ota update i hope you are implaccably patient.

Hi randy yes it does wipe your phone data but u can make backups from within galaxy nexus toolkit, as an insurance i backed up my apps via astro file manager, exported my contacts to sd then copied my file structures and contents to my laptop, it takes a while to reload data if you have lots of media files on your gnex but its worth it, after flashing new rom i just copied my data back onto phone. There are apparently ways to unlock bootloader without wiping data, or so some sites say, but i took the easy noob way, hence why you should back up your important data. Toolkit does nandroid backup of your system so if something goes wrong you can restore to former setup. Good luck mate hope it goes well, and dont panic if it soft bricks on ya, just pull battery for a bit, reinstall then turn on for normal boot into android.

Just a little extra info, i know a lot of people are worried that updating os yourself may void the software warranty. I aint a legal expert but i did discuss the matter at length with a good friend/expert litigation lawyer, and its a grey area, however if you are curious download the galaxy nexus toolkit as there is an option that returns your phone to stock, unroots and locks bootloader so all is as was if servicing by telco required. Apart from that the telcos really have to weigh the negative aspect of alleged false advertising re nexus updates versus upsetting customers who are sick of waiting and flash jellybean themselves. The path of least resistance was what a telco customer not with vodafone got when he broached the issue and got a guarantee they wouldnt void his warranty, stick up for your rights and have ombudsman number ready, amazing what being assertive of your rights and some leverage can do to encourage reasonable compromise

I don’t think that my ranting will make any difference on the deaf ears that Vodafone has, so I will put that aside and will ask you to please provide me the response to the following:

First in line for software upgrades and new established Google-based features such as Gmail and Google Talk merge with newer offerings like Music Beta across a fully integrated and easily accessible user interface.”

So still waiting to experience the pure experience, and will request you to check with them. and if possible show their own statement to them, as their devices seems like getting updates first then Galaxy Nexus (referring to Samsung Galaxy S3)

2> Also, doing a quick search on your website shows that Galaxy Nexus has reached the of life, whereas Samsung Galaxy S2 is still available, even though Galaxy Nexus was released almost after 6 months. So, can you please explain that is it actually Samsung, or Vodafone not providing / working with Samsung / putting pressure / playing along here, in giving out the update.

Hope to get a fair response.

    Thanks.

Hi Sam, you’ve raised some excellent and wholly valid points and I agree all of them. I hope that my response goes some way towards answering them and helping you to understand the situation. You’re definitely entitled to a fair response and I hope that this fits the bill for you.

To put it simply – we completely agree that it’s not good enough that other devices are receiving updates before the GALAXY Nexus. We have put considerable and consistent pressure on Samsung to deliver this update to us for testing, however it is yet to arrive. I also agree that the statement on their website is inconsistent with the situation and this has formed part of our discussions.

The eagerness of our customers to obtain this update is well known to me, the devices team as a whole, my counterparts at Samsung, and at the global level of both Samsung and Vodafone.

We are doing everything in our power to get this update out to your phones, but we simply cannot test something that we don’t physically have. We rely on our suppliers to develop software updates for us, and if this is not done we’re stuck between a rock and a hard place.

You have my word that I will continue to make the voices of our customers heard, and the moment I have any news on an update to your phones I’ll be back here to let you know.

        Hi Kieran,

Thanks for the quick response. We have been fed the same response, but I guess you / Vodafone has some NDA / policies, and we cannot expect more than this.

But I think we will be very glad if we can get the update soon. The adding the salt to the wound is that Nexus S is on 4.1.2, which is 2 years old. S3 has the update, but we are still trying to find the “Pure Google Android Experience”.

Again, I sincerely thank you for the update, and “hope” to get the update soon.

        Thanks.

Hi Sam, you’re right that there’s certain things that are not appropriate to be shared publicly. Certain conversations between businesses need to remain confidential and I hope you can understand that. The GALAXY S III and the Nexus S receiving these updates before your GALAXY Nexus is rough to see. I definitely hope to see the update soon and as soon as I hear anything new I’ll be back to share it.

I know you probably can’t talk supportedly of this, but I am waiting to the weekend and if Samsung haven’t set a date for the release of the update I’m going to do something I have no want to do and unlock the bootloader and update to the Google maintained version of the OS!

go ahead.. its worth it… my contract is ending anyways.. so didnt mind about loosing the warranty :) just follow xda. its a piece of cake to flash.. remember, everytime a ota updates your phone, the rooting vanishes, so u may have to unroot again, but unless you are a developer or would want to use apps which require special priviliges (like titanium backup), rooting is not required. root once, flash yakju, unroot, and if require relock the boot loader too.. enjoy the timely updates direct from google.

Thank tyn. I have no interest in the “root” side of things, only interested in getting away from the Samsung Australia update cycle (if you call it an update cycle because to be an update cycle they have to actually UPDATE!!!!!)!!!!!
So I relocked the bootloader (and then unlocked and relocked to update the radio to get over the 4.2 red chested Android problem).

One thing I did notice with the update I did is there isn’t the Hotword (i.e. Say google to activate voice search in Google now) option. Have you seen this or know how to fix?

Loving the updates provided “DIRECTLY BY GOOGLE” without them asking vodafone or any other carriers to “Test”

Enjoying the awesome features of 4.2.1
      – Photosphere
      – Google Now
      – Expandable notifications
      – Smoother experience (Project butter)
      – Settings shortcuts in notifications
      – Swype keyboard
      – Offline voice dictation

The problem here is not with vodafone as the same handset is distributed by all the carriers in Aus.
If samsung chooses, they can do the same by providing the OTA without asking Vodafone or any other carriers to “TEST”

But Samsung just doesnt want to provide the update especially with Galaxy S4 rumoured to be announced at CES next year they want all their attention to Galaxy S3…

I did it and it wasn’t anybody could do it simple but it was pretty easy when you got use to it. I would suggest upgrading all the way to 4.2 at least before starting to really put your stuff back on the phone as I (and it might have been just me) hit an issue at the 4.2 update stage that forced me to unlock the phone again to change the radio (I think it was radio) driver in order to get the update.

I haven’t had an issue yet (touch wood) and am also loving the Jelly Bean features! Also excited for more updates now I know I will get them in a timely manner!

I want you to be happy, and I know that timely software updates is a part of that. However we rely on our manufacturers to develop software updates for us (we only test them). As soon as we receive the update from Samsung I’ll be updating this post to share the news.

Hi jellybaby, Motorola are a handset manufacturer who sell specific “developer editions” of their phones that allow an unlockable bootloader. We do not sell any of those models. The approach of a third party manufacturer in the USA is not necessarily applicable to our policy or the local laws here in Australia.

In short – Motorola USA are free to do as they wish, but that doesn’t have an impact on what we’ll do as Vodafone AU.

I see there are new updates in this news post that as of 6/12/2012 its entered into testing phase.

Does this mean that the same process would have to be completed for future Google updates, such as 4.2, or will phones now automatically get new updates without testing?

          • Kieran McIlwain says:

Hi jellybaby, regardless of the status of the bootloader, the decisions of third parties overseas do not have an impact on the policies of Vodafone in Australia.

The process will not be changing, all firmware updates big and small need to be tested be our labs before we grant approval to them.

As you’re well aware ETAs are often missed, and there is often back and forth between us and our suppliers. Specifically for the 4.0.4 update, the lengthy delay was again waiting for submission from Samsung. We only tested and released a single build, and I hope the same will be said for the 4.1.2 update.

Hi Sam, completely understand where you’re coming from. We’ll continue to push Samsung for the speedy delivery of software updates for the GALAXY Nexus but as you’re acutely aware there can be significant delays. I genuinely have no information available to me on delivery schedules for 4.2 or 4.2.1.

My focus right now is to get our GALAXY Nexus customers onto Jelly Bean as soon as possible. While we don’t have control over the delivery schedules, we are tightening up that which we can control, like the time required for testing. Once we get 4.1.2 out to you, the discussions on future updates will begin.

I want you to have the latest software, so I’ll do everything I can to push that agenda for you and other Nexus users.

International versions of this phone, purchased through Google, or other mobile phone importers, are running fine on all networks in Australia. Vodafone allow them to be used on their network. Why do we have locale specific hardware changes to the Nexus supplied by Vodafone? <— I call BS on this.

If there was a hardware difference, the phone would have a part number of some sort to differentiate it from the others.

      Hi Jess,

      Thanks for your post.

I’m not 100% sure what is causing the delay however I can see that we’ve already approved the update so once Google is ready, we’ll be all set to roll this out to you. Keep an eye on our Weekly Software Wrap here: http://blog.vodafone.com.au/blog/software-update-weekly-wrap-24012013/

      Cheers,

      Madeleine

Just want to remind everyone at vodafone the reason I bought the nexus is specifically because its supposed to get android os updates FIRST!
And the reason I went with vodafone is because you are a global company who could, should they desire, apply some organisational pressure to make this happen. But pressure = staff = time = money.
I feel for you kieren, it looks like you’re the only man on this job, and all your supporters on this forum and all gnex users on vf are simply not a financial or organisational priority for vf.
Which means vf, you just lost my loyalty.
