Samsung GALAXY S II – Android 4.0.3 Update

Why haven’t I received my update yet?

The short answer is that the update is released in stages.

An initial group of devices are selected at random and offered the update. This lasts for 3 days, Samsung use this process to ensure the update is being released succesfully and that the servers are delivering the update properly.

After those 3 days the update is available to all users when doing a manual check for updates, but once 10% of devices have received the update access is stopped for the remainder of the day. This is to ensure servers aren’t overloaded and that those who get the update receive it succesfully.

After 10 days (that’s 10% per day) everyone has had access and the update is available freely to everyone to download.

It’s around 14 days from the initial release before every device will see the update as available.

Please see the table below for specific details on the roll out:

  • Day 1-3: 10,000 users will receive a notification to advise the software is available. The roll out will be monitored to ensure that server performance is maintained.
  • Day 4-13: The software will be made available to all users, however it is only available up to a maximum download volume representing 10% of the total installed userbase per day
  • Day 14 onwards: The update is broadly available to all users via either Kies or FOTA

From 12:00 (midday) today, 2nd May 2012 – Samsung will began rolling out the Android 4.0.3 “Ice Cream Sandwich” update for the GALAXY S II handset.

This is a platform upgrade and will change the way you experience and interact with your device. For more information about the interface changes introduced in this update, please contact Samsung Customer Care on 1300 362 603 or via any of the methods listed on here on their website.

Well said Kieran…finally there is answer to all those questions…thank you.

Could you please explain rolling out procedure? I mean can I upgrade the phone @12PM tomorrow? or Samsung takes a while to deliver the update to every handset?

Just browsing through the comments here, I notice a lot of negative feedbacks regarding the update. In contrast though, it has been a pleasure experience with Vodafone for me.

I’ve pre-ordered my Galaxy S2 last year since then, I absolutely had zero problems with the phone. I’ve rooted my phone and taken advantage of that aspect as well.

Then, on 2nd of May, I’ve updated to ICS at 2pm right at the buzzer via Kies. The download took a while as I have slow Internet connection, however the upgrade was seamless.

ICS has now rejuvenated my phone, it runs silky smooth, and as I’ve installed Apex Launcher, it looks the part as well.

Thank you Samsung and Vodafone! It has been a quite an experience, and I must say, this has been the best phone I’ve EVER owned.

I was planning to upgrade to Galaxy S3 once it comes out, but I’m going to hold on to my S2 for one more year, all thanks to this new update.

Thank you very much!! I’ll see you again when S4 comes out!!

Hi Nick, the FOTA Update only updates those files that have changed. Updating via Kies reflashes the entire phone, so the entire OS must be downloaded.

    Good to hear Kieran,
Is there any downside at all for doing the FOTA update (other than that it takes longer over a 3G connection than through a PC), perhaps a total reflash through KIES is better for the phone, reduces the chances of a software error?
and have you any idea on how long a FOTA update would take? I know that it depends on how strong your 3G connection is, but perhaps a rough time based on VF’s average 3G speeds?
Also does anyone else on here have trouble connecting their S2 to Kies on a mac?

    • Kieran McIlwain says:

Hi LawStudent, no real downside but you’re right that Kies performs a full-flash of the phone. A rough time is tough to give, as everybody’s experience will differ. The file size is provided – your best bet would be to perform a speedtest and work backwards from there! :)

Hey Josh this is a free update, if someone is telling you to pay for it i would be suspicous especially if they are actually from a vodafone store. Best contact customer care, or maybe Kieran can point you in the right direction.
To update from your actual Galaxy S2 the best way to go would be to go to ‘Settings’ then “About phone” and then ‘Software update’. *Mentioned in the Release above*

As for Kies i am not personally sure of the update procedure, but again *Mentioned in the release above*

Credit where credit is due … TIO action averted!

Well done to the team at VHA, kudos for using the “3″ logo on the main blog page, nice to see that VHA remember that “3 Mobile ” is a brand they own and operate and have many loyal and valuable customers remaining on that network (3GIS) and billing purposes.

As for the update to ICS, I can confirm (via a private email I received from Kieran) that GSM Only mode has been restored and that the handset when searching for networks will allow access to “3 2G” and “Roaming 2G” inside the 3GIS (Three Mobile / 3 / 3 AUS) broadband zone (which is what 3 Mobile customers are allowed to do as they have access to those networks).

Now that this has sorted out, the next “issue” lol is what happens to “Roaming 3G/2G” access after August 31 2012 …

we only have info from Telstra as to what will happen to 3GIS network but nothing from VHA or Telstra about what happens to “Roaming” access, other than VHA stating via Planet 3 and three.com.au website that Three Mobile customer across Australia will receive access to “Vodafone 3G/2G” which is replacing “3 2G” during March through June 2012.

I know that this is not Kierans area of expertise, however it would be nice to know what is going to happen.

    Regards

Hi Percy and Cyberspider, this is correct. Some features of Swype are not supported in Android 4.0 so it has to be removed. A beta is available online, but it’s just that – a beta. I’m afraid it’s not quite ready for prime-time or inclusion with production software but I’m looking forward to seeing it back there in a future update!

    Hi Kieran,

Just wondering if one update process is better than the other?
    Is OTA better than Kies?
I would like to keep my data on the phone but would it be better for the phone if I do a complete flash?

    Cheers

Hi Greg, I’m afraid that we don’t actually control the roll-out of this update (in this case it’s Samsung). Many users are already enjoying the benefits of the update, but keep in mind that we only communicated that roll out would begin from 12PM.

By its very definition, a roll out means not everyone will get it at the same time. It’s also worth noting that the FOTA/Kies update is the same regardless of the carrier you choose (as it all gets routed through Samsung’s systems). I hope you’re able to get your hands on the update soon! :)

Gave up on OTA after a few connection failures, went to Kies and panicked after the long download, Kies lost lost connection with the phone and said disconnect cable , switch off phone, remove battery while the phone had the android symbol showing and “DO NOT SWITCH OFF THE DESTINATION blah blah blah. As nothing was happening I did the switch phone off, remove battery thing, replaced it, switched on and got the message update file received press ok to update. All done successfully in the end, breathes easy now :-)

Hi mark, as evidenced by the many commenters here on the post the update is definitely available! The update began rolling out from midday today, but it is a roll out. That means, not everybody will receive it at the same time. Once your phone is ready for the update, you’ll be notified or alternatively you can keep checking in Settings periodically. Fingers crossed it arrives for you soon!

    TGV says:

Kieran, found several bugs with ICS 4.0.3 that the VHA team obviously could not find…

    - Bluetooth no longer works when trying to send a song / video / pic or file to another paired or non paired device (tried several settings changes none worked … tried with old firmware worked no issues)
    - If playing an MP3 and someone rings when you go back to the MP3 its not working the right way, sounds like it is stalling and restarting the song (have tried it several times with different MicroSD cards refresh ect, still the problem is there), to fix it the end user has to reboot the handset
    - A strange error code pops up when (ERR:0027A) when you try to change from swype keyboard to samsung keyboard (confirmed with Telstra, Optus and XSA OPEN AU based firmware)

    Note:
I did a clean install (in other words booted up in recovery mode and wiped clean the partitions) that did not fix any of these errors with the firmware.

Oh just on my network selection issues, its great to have GSM Only mode back, the bad thing is that the handset still wont list the networks as separate 3G and 2G networks (like it did in DUKF4 CSC:HUTKG1), also just on the network side of things, what the hell have VHA done to “Roaming GSM & Mega 3G” there is no longer any packet data service working when using either 3services A{N and 3netaccess APN, packet data signal is restored when you force it back on Three 3G and 3 2G (and for our friends over in WA and SA) 3 (Vodafone) 3G …

Tell the network team to fix that issue right away, it is damn frustrating to see VHA do something right and then screw something else right up again, I know that VHA switched on 3 (Vodafone) 3G for WA and now SA customers but the rest of us still need packet data services in Sydney (and other capital / metro regions) when we are using Roaming 2G and 3G …

    regards
    TGV

Not very impressed with the interface, My wife has Nexus S with ICS which has a lot nicer interface, especially the application launcher has to categories, one for Apps and other for Widgets which is missing.

Updated vodafone galaxy s2 to ICS via Kies yesterday which was Successful and So far I’m very happy & impressed with the new firmware. Runs very smoothly and more faster than the previous firmware & I love the Face unlock feature so much,Thank you Vodaphone!!

& regarding about the Face unlock feature, it does appear in the settings app, to find it on Vodafone galaxy S2 Click on “Settings” > Security > Screen lock > If phone asks to Enter Pin which is the one you use when you keep your phone locked then enter the Pin and click Next and you will see all theses options available for Screen lock including the Face unlock.

I hope the information above helps Adrian & Everyone! *cheers*

At 12:00 today, I succesfully downloaded the update via FOTA and tried to install, but I was told that it was failed and I was suggested to update via Kies.

Then I tried to check the software update on phone again. I was told “no update availabe”. This situation continue to now.

I am kind of desperate. I don’t want to update via Kies, becasue I have to install all the software and figure them again, which is time consuming.

    Any suggestion.

I didn’t get any notifications for updating FOTA so I updated about two hours ago via Kies. Simple and painless process, I don’t really see how much simpler it could get.

ICS seems nice so far, no real change from Gingerbread with TouchWiz, just a lot of small things.

    Hi,

I updated through Kies without problems. But I noticed two regressions so far compared to Android 2.3

1- Photo sharing: When the picture is opened, the “send via” button offers sharing via WIFI only. I have to go back to the gallery, long press the picture to tick it and click “send via” to be able to share through tweeter, facebook, gmail, etc. It is much longer than before.

2- For the version of SWYPE keyboard uploaded: the only language available is AU English. I cannot switch to french, spanish or german like on Swype pre-installed on Android 2.3. And SWYPE website says that it is possible to upload new language through settings>language, but nothing is available on this SWYPE pre-installed on Android 4.
Is there any restriction on the SWYPE v3.26 pre-installed with the ICS update?
Do I need to uninstall this version and get Swype Beta from SWYPE website to get all languages?

    Cheers,

Same here. It is extremely annoying as I often use another language with extra letters on the keyboard. Did you ever find any solution to this? I need to add another language and I don’t think you should have to root the phone to do it. I guess I have to go back to using the Samsung keyboard instead of Swype. Sigh…

It is beyond me that some one could think that removing the possibility to change keyboard language was a good idea for an upgrade feature.

Just updated via Kies. Everything seems OK other than I can’t connect to my WiFi router anymore. Tried disconnecting and retyping password but still unable to connect? It actually goes through obtaining IP address and says it successfully connects but as soon as I try to use my browser or any apps that needs an internet connection it just times out. Also original layout of apps out of whack. Had to rearrange all my apps and home screens manually to the way it was previously.

Managed to upgrade my 3 branded phone about 20mins after 12 yesterday via kies.
No issues so far with either the update or the ICS.
My tip for kies are turn off antivirus before use… I use kaspersky and it causes kies no end of connection problems with the phone and with the internet.
After the phone has updated and you have had your initial explore turn it off and restart it. In the past i have always found the phone to be laggy if not given a fresh boot. This time it even came up with a message on turn on saying it was optimising something so its obviously worth turning it on/off a few times after upgrade.
I’ve had no issues with the camera start up speed and i had no error message when switching between swipe and the samsung keyboard but that was by setting the default in the menu.
    Hope this helps people.

Hi Vinay, by its very definition a “roll out” means it will not be available to all users at one time. The update is in the process of rolling out to tens of thousands of users, and will be staged. Be patient, keep checking and you’ll receive the update when your device is allocated to receive it :)

Well Kies is a dried turd of an excuse for software.

During a firmware update, half-way through downloading the new android to my phone, an error occurred – forcing my phone to go into firmware recovery. This is after four failed attempts at downloading the firmware from the net.

Then upon trying to recover the firmware, using the firmware recovery in kies (and following all the instructions), I reliably get an error occurring about 6% through restoring. So yes, I have tried this multiple times.

Wouldn’t you call this ‘bricking’ a phone? (From a kies perspective anyway)

I don’t think I’ll be going through vodafone or kies to go about getting my ice cream sandwich >=(

Probably something to do with the new OS indexing your media files. Just be patient and if you have no love after a ‘reasonable’ time, do a battery pull.

And I am the one waiting for the update as the phone keeps saying:

Setting > About Phone > Software Update > Update

    “No Update available”

I mean I can understand the staged roll out, but why send a message to everyone if they are not yet eligible to be upgraded. This is what disappoints. Here I am telling everyone, as soon as I got the ICS upgrade sms, that I have the latest and greatest Android version, only to fall flat on my face with no update available.

Hi pimsonerst, you don’t need an additional application, FOTA is built into the phone’s software. If the update is not yet available to your device you will need to wait until your handset is eligible. Unfortunately I don’t have visibility of Samsung’s systems to tell you when that will happen.

Thanks Keiran – I appreciated the regular updates.
Very smooth update for me last night (via Kies) – was surprised that all my settings were retained and I didn’t have to restore anything.

The feature-set seems to be very different to what we see online in ‘what’s new in ICS’ type posts, at least for the Interface. (see http://www.android.com/about/ice-cream-sandwich/)

e.g. I don’t see the favourites bar on the home screen, I don’t see a camera icon on the lock screen, I don’t see the new ‘People’ app, or the new Gallery, or the new Camera app.

The only ‘new’ stuff I’ve really noticed (in the short timeframe I’ve had it) are the OS level improvements such as VPN, Wifi-Direct, Face Unlock, browser, gmail. There’s probably others too – I just haven’t noticed yet as the omissions are most obvious.

Was this expected? i.e. was there any communication I missed as to what was in or out?

    Hi Kieran

Mate I followed the information on how to upgrade, I tried on both windows 7 and on a mac, latest Kies, I even uninstalled Kies and installed them again. the update goes through, when it’s time to install it gives an error message and tells me that i need to recover. I try to recover and the recover fails as well. It’s GT-I9100T Voda branded phone, not tampered with.

Kies is simply stupid, and nonfunctional, there is no support section for it, no forum, no contact nothing. not a single shred of information on what to do and how to fix it. and the biggest audacity of all is that Samsung have the nerves to launch a “Wake Up” campaign against Apple. Clean your mess first and then tell people to wake up.

I never ever regretted anything in my life beside buying this phone and be at the mercy of Samsung and you guys. problem is I can see what the answer going to be, it’s not Vodafone problem, it’s Samsung problem. And Samsung doesn’t even have a support centre or a call centre where you can talk to a human being. I have no idea what kind of a business is this. I should have never given Android a chance, somehow i knew this was going to happen and it’s happening.

I will tell you this mate, this can’t go on like this for long, it’s time to bring this to the public and let everyone knows what they are in if they choose Samsung and Vodafone. It’s time someone is held accountable. expect this to go on all major blogs and news sites.

    Thank you.

        Hi Kieran

Yes BlackBerry orchestrated that. I stand corrected, thanks for pointing that out.

As regards to the support of Samsung, I already spoke with them, and they took my information and said they’ll send me a “Tips and Tricks” document on how to make Kies recognise my phone on windows!

Beside the above information what has changed? nothing, blackberry or the teletubbies. Does it make the whole Samsung/Vodafone a great customer experience? Don’t get me wrong, problems happen, it happen all the time. but here’s a point to consider:

The update has been with you for over a month and a half, testing and grilling and back and fourth between you guys and samsung. result of that (which is what matters only) some people are having a smooth ride, some are having a bumpy ride, others are shouting about their battery level and slow functionality, and other (including me) are left in the cold trying to google their way to fix it, and their only concrete solution beyond the “Tips and Tricks” of the official Kies software is to Flash the ROM and do it your self. effectively deleting out all your data and any possible warranty on the phone in the process.

Unfortunately for you, samsung, me and everyone else in this sour relationship named Android. Is that we I bought the phone from you guys, Samsung control the updates, which is controlled by you and only you. I wish i could try a different source without resorting to deleting or damaging my phone, but no I’m sitting at the mercy of this level of customer support.

Mate I shouldn’t be sitting all day long on the phone chasing Samsung to answer my calls and effectively fix their software and make it reliable. It’s your Job to do that, it’s whats called customer support, because last time i checked I’m paying for this service.

Hi Iyad, we have a number of support remedies available if you’re facing issues, including troubleshooting with our technical support team over the phone (their details are contained in the blog post) or in our Community Forums (link also in the blog post, or by clicking here).

Regarding the issues some people are reporting, every handset (like a computer) becomes unique based on a person’s usage pattern. With hundreds of thousands of GALAXY S II handsets out there it’s impossible to have an update that performs perfectly on every handset, every time. Especially when it comes to a major platform upgrade as some applications may not be optimised for the new operating system which can have an overall impact on performance.

We’re 100% here to support you – and we do that by offering a range of support channels including calling us on the phone, posting here on the blog, Twitter, Facebook, our Community Forums or even visiting one of our retail stores. If your experience with Samsung has not been positive and you’re still facing issues, I’d invite you to make a thread in the Community where other users and our Help & Support Team can work on resolving these issues for you.

So After a few hours with Samsung “Support” team playing let’s guess why “Samsung” Kies is not recognising “Samsung” mobile. The brilliant solution was the following….Drums Rolls please….. Backup the phone on the mac (thank God I had a mac), once done, “FACTORY RESET” the phone…. Drum Roll again…..after the factory reset the phone should work fine and Kies should the phone on “Windows”. Then the sucker left and support is closed now.
Now me giving the benefit of the doubt, I decided to play along. result= I have a phone that is wiped out, which still can’t connect to Kies. Beside the F and U words that are sparingly running in my mind right now. I just want to say you guys are in for one big public scandal.

I find it so frustrating.. Finally i updated it, downloaded it from sammobiles flashed it and bingo she ran. So smooth gingerbread has nothing on this. Even custom roms that are so fast don’t have the smoothness i found in this ICS update.. However it didnt come without faults. No longer would the phone silence when turing it over. No longer would the phone speak the names of the callers and sms out. And emails. No longer did the auto brightness work. And at times the drop down bar and other icons didn’t respond right away to first touch. Before im questioned about double checking reinstalling and getting any extra gear needed – yes i did this all. I just didn’t work for me.

Couple of things bugged me. The new social hub looks and feels better, however stuffing your sms in with your emails makes life a little cluttered. I’ve already got 3 emails, home and 2 work ones and unless i select them one and a times it’s one list of emails and sms, and im sure facebook linked-in twitter would be in their somewhere.

Real massive core stability and smoothness upgrade over gingerbread easily. Just some things need looking into, but a real thumbs up on a true successor that’s better.

My internet speeds went from 0.15 mbps to 8 mbps. I kid you not. I can now happily tether my computer to my phone as I planned all along. It takes ages just to go to setting screen. Another thing, it keeps showing message that says “Unfortunately, Swype has stopped.” Very annoying.

I don’t know what to do and I don’t know how to revert it back to Gingerbread ..

Went to vodafone outlet, they are quite helpful and nice .. unfortunately the only solution they gave me is to send it back to vodafone to get it reset back to Gingerbread. That means I wouldn’t have a mobile to use for at least a week so they say.

I’ve used custom roms before so i was able to nadroid back it up and remove everything for a day. When i wasn’t satisfied all was 100% perfect i restored my phone to my saved backup.

I too am experiencing bad battery life.

I am with Crazy Johns, so can’t speak to Vodafone. Samsung just tell me to factory reset, which I have done twice before calling them anyway.

      The story:
I usually had about a day and a half of battery. Now I unplug the charger about 8:00am and by 5PM I have 4% battery life left. Therefore if I got stuck and needed an emergency call I am out of luck in using this phone.

I wanted to do a screen capture and of the battery graph, but screen capture no longer works. Is there a new key combination with ICS? Anyway the graph was a straight line decline, which is a characteristic of a phone left to idle, but some process causing the decline. Battery screen says brightness, but that can’t be true since the screen is off, and when I received calls the screen should have been off too.

So what was done for the last few months? Packaging the Channel 10 application?

I think you guys have a different definition of the phrase “ready and waiting”

I find this process very frustrating. vodafone seems incapable of giving regular consistent updates to a process

now that its been a couple of days and the update was obviously not “ready and waiting” there should be further updates

something like “for those people still waiting for ics on their GS2 please be patient. this update has taken longer than we expected and we are working with samsung to get this update to everyone as quickly as possible”

I was a big fan of vodafone before this process. now I feel like I should look around for a another provider when my contract expires

I’d like to support Peter here; “ready” means “ready”. “ready” does not mean when you log in and all you get is “No update available”. Just plain English, I suppose, when people come across the word “ready”. The SMS could and should have been better phrased.

Any one know why my Vodafone SG2 states that “Your device does not support upgrading via KIES” within KIES? I have not rooted by phone or patched it since collecting it from the Vodafone shop (PDS:KF4 / PHONE:KF4 / CSC KF4 (HUT) ).

Would be great to see if ICS fixes the phone instability issues, it like to drop calls, loose data signals, fail to send SMSs and reboot itself every couple of days just for fun. Nothing to dramatic but it is a bit odd when the phone start playing the Vodafone startup sound in a meeting due to a reboot … it seem that silent mode does not work on crash and reboots….

Any ideas on how to get my phone up and running again? The latest attempt this morning was a factory hard set and then it crashed about a third of the way through reinstalling the apps in my google account, so need to start all over again. Is there a way to re-install the ICS firmware again? HELP please…

Since getting and update the phone always comes up with Charging paused Voltage too high pop up error. this interrupts anything we do and drains battery continuously. Update not worth doing, take the unlock screen for a sample – a huge 0 button and small enter button. Have done factory reset, kies application even though claiming to backup apps and account settings doesn’t restore any of that.

Now Vodafone has charged me for this update and when i call customer care for this, they state that update download will be charged, but update doesn’t that doesn’t make any sense since update is nothing but a download.

I’m really pissed as this cost me around $29 extra. Bad service and Poor feedback. This is going as a negative Feedback for Vodafone on all social networks.

    Hi Kieran,
I recently upgraded my Vodafone branded SGS2 to 4.0.3 via FOTA. What has happened since then:
    1) Initial upgrade seemed to complete fine. Was functioning normally. Next day it rebooted by itself and the screen stated it was completing the upgrade and then functioned normally- doesnt sound right
    2) The main reason for this post is the following issue which has arisen (since the upgrade): at random times the phone will go dead. (It is not due to a rapidly discharging battery as I monitor battery charge frequently). It will refuse to do anything until repeated holding down the power button brings it back to life. This has happened about three times since the upgrade. The most annoying part is I use the phone as an alarm clock. This morning it failed to go off, sure enough it was in its dead state. The phone had been almost fully charged before going to bed and previous to upgrade the phone easily lasts all day on a full charge. Upon firing it up it showed 10% battery- very strange. Looking at the battery charge graph you can see it was going along fine and then all of a sudden it dies and when turned on again almost flat.
To be honest I dont see any major benefit to the ICS upgrade. The phone is not any faster, there are no new functions which are so much better that they justify an upgrade, there are only some minor cosmetic changes and worst yet it has introduced a problem to my phone. I think a lot of my fellow SGS2 users are probably thinking the same. Anyway what do you and your team suggest I do I guess you are going to tell me to do a factory reset?

Hi Jim, I’m sorry to hear you’ve been facing issues since the upgrade. Your experience is certainly not what we want for our customers, and not typical of many users. You’re correct that a factory reset is a great step to take as it will clear any latent software issues that may have presented post-upgrade.

Another option is to do a backup, reflash and restore via Kies as this will perform a full upgrade rather than the incremental update with FOTA.

To do some more specific troubleshooting, I’d suggest making a post in our Community Forums where our Help & Support Teams can assist further: http://community.vodafone.com.au/t5/iPhone-and-Android/bd-p/iphonedroid

      Hi Jim
Were you able to get your battery problem resolved? I have recently purchased the SII from Vodafone which came preinstalled with 4.03 ICS. I also have a problem where once or twice a day the phone will freeze while not in use. When I look at the battery use graph it also shows an immediate loss of 20-30% battery power each time this happens. I’ve yet to work out if the phone is using the battery while in its frozen state, or whether some other issue is at play causing the battery to immediate lose charge.

It usually happens while I’m driving, but yesterday was the first time it happened elsewhere.

I’d rather not do a factory reset at this stage since it came with ICS factory installed and the obvious work to get everything reinstalled.

My phone doesn’t get hot and there are no other issues that I have noticed. Battery life generally seems ok apart from the above issue.

I will try charging the battery with the phone off to see if that helps as someone suggested, but I’d appreciate it if anyone has anything to share that worked for them.

I was quite happy about how the FOTA update went, aside from losing contacts everything else was fine. However, as Mary and Ravi Ajuha noted as well, I was charged for using 3G to download the upgrade despite the statements in this blog and too I exceeded my 200mb download allowance.

“The update is available free of charge, and should you choose to download it using 3G data within Australia and while using a Vodafone SIM card, the data will not be deducted from your monthly allowance.”

I only realised after my billing period finished there was a problem. It took 40 minutes on the phone to Vodafone support to resolve, but eventually the additional data charges were waived. My wife had the same issue and, while the excess data charges were also eventually waived, she was only offered 100mb for the rest of her data allowance in the billing cycle. The Vodafone representative could not even find this blog on the website, and when technical support assisted they kept telling her the download is 225mb and incurs 3G data charges.

It is disappointing the billling is not set up properly and then not properly honoured (or even recognised as a problem) when raised with Vodafone support. These are the sorts of things that make customers quite frustrated and give Vodafone a bad name.

My advice to others on the $29 plan who are doing this upgrade is not to use 3G unless you have a good amount of time to talk through getting the data charges reversed with Vodafone support.

    Hi Kieran,

FOTA updates were a breeze from 2.3.1 to 2.3.5 (two updates in all).

Turned out that FOTA update from 2.3.5 to ICS went for a toss.
Was able to download the update but the phone fails to budge beyond the ‘Samsung Galaxy S2 Black screen’ (this is after the Vodafone screen).

Tried leaving it for couple of hours but didn’t work, even taking the battery out and restarting .
Pressing Power,Volume + and Home Key switches it off again.

How do i go about it?

    Thanks

    Hi,

I just got my Galaxy S2 (I9100T) yesterday, and update the OS to Ice Cream Sandwich. After that it works slow, specially when rotates. It does not rotate the pix & photos at all.

    Could you please help?

    Thanks,
    Mary

Sorry Vodafone, I already posted this on the Samsung Galaxy S11 update page……

I upgraded my KIES to the latest version a few nights back and attached my Samsung Galaxy S2 (I9100TDUKJ1-CL687461 root@DELL136 #2) to it and it advised that the firmware upgrade to the long awaited ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich)was available for download.

I must have attempted to upgrade it on 20 different occasions and each time it returned an error.

The majority of the errors were (Unzip Error) when it reached 85% (no error code provided)

The was one instance where it actually looked like it was going to process the upgrade only for the another error saying, please unplug the phone, turn off, restart and then plug in again and it should upgrade.

This didn’t occur or else I wouldn’t be posting this comment.

    I have checked the web for various blogs and have found a site which list the CSC’s that ICS is available in Australia for and they are;

    Australia.
    OPP = AUSTRALIA
    OPS = AUSTRALIA
    VAU = AUSTRALIA T
    XSA = AUSTRALIA
    TEL = AUSTRALIA T
    HUT = AUSTRALIA T

Obviously my DUK version is not in this list, nor at the top of the technical information.

This is fine, but why does KIES advise that there is an upgrade available if it is not?

I don’t have a problem with the GingerBread OS and hence don’t necessarily need the Upgrade but surely KIES can read that my phone is not compatible with the upgrade as yet?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated and or advice as to when I should reattempt to upgrade rather than trying frustratingly every time I link to KIES?

I did the ugrade from Gingerbread to ICS the other day… Ive had nothing but problems ever since.

It shuts itself off several times a day

    It overheats

It freezes and I have to pull battery out.

It is useless to me now. I rely on my phone for work (medical assistant)

Worst thing I did was do the upgrade.

    Now what ????

I’ll just add this to the pathetic reception I already struggle with !!

Vodaphone need to fix this ASAP !!!

Hi SamsungFreak, sounds like you’re a massive GALAXY fan and I’d hate to keep you from the latest update. Did you purchase your GALAXY S II from us here in Australia? If it was bought from another carrier or imported from overseas we won’t be able to update it for you.

Hi Michael, Samsung have not provided that update to us for testing. If you’re interested in future updates to Samsung products that we don’t have access to I’d recommend contacting them directly.

My Hotmail ActiveSync not working after the upgrade to 4.0.3.
I can send and receive email using Social Hub or default email client with ActiveSync account but would not Sync when refreshed. For example when I Read an email in the phone does not get marked as Read in the Hotmail server.
Everything was working fine before the upgrade.

I have removed and added the Hotmail account and it Synced for the first time but soon after it is back to faulty state.
