Samsung GALAXY S III – Android 4.0.4 Update

From 1:00pm today, 24th August 2012 – Samsung began roll out of the Android 4.0.4 Maintenance Release 2 update for GALAXY S III handsets sold by Vodafone in Australia.

The update is released in a staggered process, which means not everybody can update at the same time.

This is a maintenance release and is designed to address some small bugs and introduce minor features. Your day to day experience with your device will broadly remain the same.

The update is available either using Wireless Upgrade (OTA) or by synchronising with Samsung Kies.

Hi Sad Face, that’s some tough luck! I’d be pretty upset too. Unfortunately it appears that the 10,000 user cap has been reached in record time. The next batch will be released at 1:00PM on Monday as per the roll out schedule.

Shouldnt it have saved it to my device or something to install later, cause thats what is said after downloading
        Install later or now,

If not i wont bother with this BS and just root my sgs3 and put jellybean on it

Hi Sad Face, don’t worry about your data allowance as if you’re using a Vodafone SIM within Australia it won’t have been deducted from your monthly allowance. Because you attempted the install and it failed, the previously downloaded package would have been deleted. If you had simply deferred the update by saying “later” it would have remained.

As I mentioned, the update will next be available on Monday at 1:00PM.

          • Once more the Sith will rule the GALAXY & we shall have ANDROID! says:

Initially I had a similar problem…with the added mix that i am a Red Bull Mobile customer (vodafone network). I saw the OTA update notification; started to downloaded over 3G – inititated this then stoped it and thought i would do it at home later. Then when i got home I did another check…said no update available. I tried Wifi…no update available. I sort of thought I ok maybe i stuffed it up by stoping it. First tried to call vodafone customer support ; the lady there had the simplistic view (&no knowledge red bull works on vodafone network) that if i wasn’t a vodafone customer the update wouldn’t reach me the same etc…so i went to the TWO vodafone shops at northland. i had 4.0.4 showing on my device but wanted to check the kernel versions of the phones in store ( since this was a maintenance update). SO anyways needless to say the staffs technical knowledge was close to irrelevant on this but i was told ..try factory reset & the samsung kies update Reset didn’t work at a time after midnight…in the early minutes of saturday morning…i did a kies check & there’s an update available :) so it seems KIES is capable of handling more then the 10.000 downloads as the file is on a central server and is downloaded through your net connection. Now i need to charge my phone from 47% to something a bit more meaty…also i’d like to say for those of you thinking about jelly bean update…(won’t come for A WHILE) don’t rush out and just get it as obviously the adobe flash support wont be “official”. thanks voda for maintenance release.

      Hi Kieran,

I have updated to LH1 via Kies today and am liking the bug fixes and the brightness bar in the notification drop down.

The only thing that i am not liking is the inability to edit the Home Dock apps. I dont know if its a bug or if the update has removed this feature but itis really annoying as i can’t customize the apps i actually use and place them on the dock bar.
I can edit the lock screen apps through settings but not the actual dock apps…

Any info would be great, Thanks.

Voda phone has had over 2 weeks to resolve this issue and still nothing. Please escalate this issue as i can see its affecting many people and im really not happy with this upgrade. Also id like to note that its a pretty crap customer service that because of a problem with a software release we the paying customer has to check back consistanly on the forum for a workaround or fix. Can Vodaphone contact me with a fix instead of me wasting my time checking, it could be weeks or months before a fix is in place.

noticed the same issue! it seems it is a bug in AU firmware samsung has provided to vodafone as the NZ version of the same update seems to work fine with the ability to edit both your dock icons and your home screen! really annoying though!
The only good thing for me is that it didn’t change my customisations on the dock from before so I still have those icons from before update but no more customisation!!!!

How bad is this??? I have a shortcut that I dont want or use as was messing around and trialling things on my phone before the update. Prefered the old moving app icons from various screens rather than having to edit to move page. Could have more bugs than fixes (for me anyway).

    Hey guys,

For those who are having difficulties customizing the home screen, I can assure you that the feature is still there, just hidden. To delete something off the home screen, thou simply press and hold then drag to the bin at the bottom. To move app around, you need to press menu, edit screen then you will be able to move them around.

Why did Samsung do this? No idea.

Hi Stacey, the update is released progressively in batches. If you ignore the prompt your spot is reallocated to another user. A new batch is opened each day at 1:00PM AEST, so check again this afternoon. If you do the upgrade over 3G and you’re using a Vodafone AU SIM (and not roaming) you won’t be charged data access fees either.

For those unable to change the home screen dock icons, the guys at the Sydney Samsung store said it was purely a vodafone update issue.

The Optus and Telstra S3 phones in the Samsung store were able to change the dock icons. The Vodafone S3 in the samsung store was not able to change the dock icons.

The samsung staff said it was an update issue that vodafone gets off google. Not a Samsung issue.

I was told by Vodafone that I could not revert to an older update and that I may need to wait for a new update to fix this problem.

    Very annoying problem.

Hi Des, I’m sorry to hear you were given incorrect information at the Samsung store as our technical lead at Samsung has confirmed to us that the feature was deliberately removed.

I do know that this particular maintenance release has at this stage only been rolled out by Samsung to Vodafone handsets and only in the last few days to “generic” GALAXY S IIIs – so that may explain why the behaviour wasn’t present on the other devices you tested.

There’s more information about this to be found in the Vodafone Community.

So, I’ve searched high and low for an answer to this and haven’t found one so far. Since updating to 4.0.4, I cannot change any of the apps at the bottom of the screen (The ones near all apps, not the lock screen). The old way to change them was to long press on the app you want to change and you can move it, however when I long press now nothing happens. Also, when trying to move an app onto the tray, the tray turns into a trash can and no apps can be added. Does anyone know of a fix to this? I know the update changed the way you position apps/widgets on screen (menu>edit page) but I can’t find anything to change the app tray.

Also, as a long shot, does anyone know how to stop the one second delay the phone ringer has where it plays the ring tone quietly then jumps to the proper volume? This is also a frustrating feature that I’ve found a lot of complaints for, but no answers!

The only other problem I have is every time I make a call, I get a message saying “Conditional Call Forwarding Active”. There is nothing active on my vodafone account and whenever I try to change call forwarding on my device I get an “Unknown response from network” error message. Any help here?

I know all of these problems are small in the grand scheme of things, but I paid a lot for the damn thing and expect it to work 100% all of the time!

I am so very disappointed in my galaxy s3 thus far. When I first got the phone it was great but since the latest update there has been so many problems. I will not stand for Samsung changing their mind with the editable dock icons and I refuse to have the ones that were there before the update stuck there forever. If this is not fixed I will be returning the phone and asking for an iphone. Hey. I’ve just realized lately that since that last minor update there’s no way to change the four icons in the dock down the bottom of the screen. Is there any special reason why this feature has been disabled? I went to change the shortcut for the stock browser to dolphin and it won’t let me. Not a deal breaker but quite annoying.

Hi Dave, Samsung have advised us that this feature was deliberately removed from the handset.

This is nuts. Surely there must be a workaround for this, even iPhones have this functionality without jailbreak!

Home screen dock icon issue may not be a bug but it certainly was a big stuff up. Even if it was honestly deliberately removed, this is a feature that you need to get reversed. I cant post on your support page because the link is down at the moment. I have an app there now that i dont use anymore and its even worse that you say it was deliberate!! Please raise the issue that this needs to be fixed. We should be worrying about things like this.
For the others having the same issue, download launcher pro and use a custom UI in the mean time (yes you can change dock icons with pro launcher)

Hi Rob, we have already spoken with Samsung regarding this and they have let us know that it was a deliberate decision. This change has been rolled out (or will be shortly) to all GALAXY S III handsets so it’s not a Vodafone-specific change. Unfortunately we don’t control the features of the handsets or software updates but we’ve definitely let Samsung know your feedback.

I cant believe that samsung would have overlooked this… Limiting customers choice is an apple trait, not samsung.

There is an icon missing from the shortcut bar, it looks ridiculous, and no way to change it…. samsung/voda should fix this or offer a refund.

Is there any way i can restore the firmware to the old one

Hi Rob, if you perform a factory reset your device will restore the default layout of icons. As I mentioned we don’t control the features of handsets or software updates so I’m afraid that in this case we won’t be able to fix this for you.

Guys, I don’t want to add petrol to the fire, but my galaxy3 which I got on ebay (unlocked) just got the jellybean update (4.1.1 kernel 3.0.31-280104) and I can freely move the dock icons just like I could before, with ICS.
So to my eyes it looks like Testra et al (which my friend has and also suffers from the lock-dock problem) got a crappy version of the patch.

Of course, I had the same issue with the dock icons not being able to be edited after the upgrade. To say it made me mad was an understatement!
However, I changed the launcher to the Apex Launcher (which works brilliantly I might add) and the dock icons are all changeable again. In fact, I now have *5* dock icons on the bottom of my screen and with Apex it will actually let you fit more icons on your entire home screen, so you can customise it to your exact specifications.
Apex is available for free in the Play Store by the way. I tried GO Launcher and it wasn’t really what I was looking for and a little complicated, but Apex is just perfect.
Try it – it may solve your problems like it did for me!

    hi vodafone,

I downloaded the new update but it rebooted then nothing happened and it went back to the ics software…Now when i try to re download the update this message pops up

“Access to the software update service is provided to users in the order in which they request it. Try Later”

I am very disappointed because after the download it said phone must reboot, rebooted then when the ome screen came up it just said update without anothe rmessage, so i clicked ok..now im stuck.

    Hi Kieran McIlwain ,

It’s not good enough to say this is not our problem speak to samsung direct,
We bought the handsets from you as a carrier, you are in bed with them and they should and would listen more to you as a company and a large customer than us induvidual customers. You have essentially locked us down to your network and the handset for two years and this is just not good enough.

Everyone workldwide is able to edit the home dock icons and it’s only us stuck on vodafone Aus who have to suffer through this irritation.

As a rep you are being very responsive to comments here, but you should be taking the case forward and pushing it with Vodafone on our behalf. Afterall don’t you assure the warranty on the handsets even though it might be paid for in the background by Vodafone?

Not good enough in my opinion, I want my home dock to be editable without having to root and expose my phone to security vulnerabilities. Is anybody listening ?

Hi Not Good Enough, it’s true that you purchased the handset from us and it’s correct that we’ve got a responsibility to look after you. I also agree that it’s my role to make the voices of our customers heard to our suppliers. It’s one of the main reasons that as a product manager, I love to have open and honest conversations directly with customers here on the blog.

Specifically regarding the bottom row of icons on your home screen, this change was introduced in the Maintenance Release 2 update delivered in June of this year. On receiving feedback from customers about the change, I took those concerns to Samsung. In their response to me they advised that it was a deliberate decision to change this functionality. This change also applies to all Australian carriers, not just Vodafone.

The position of the icons is much like the shape of a car, and in that the dealer has little control over the final product. As a mobile carrier our role is only to test and certify software updates for release on our network. Unfortunately we don’t get a seat at the table when product decisions are made by our partners.

My earlier suggestion to provide feedback directly to Samsung was intended to help amplify the message which we are already sending them. The more feedback they receive on the issue, the more chance there is that a change may be introduced. However, our discussions with our partners including Samsung will continue regardless of any external contact by customers.

We do provide a warranty on your phone, and we also extend it to cover the life of your contract. However a warranty is a protection against manufacturing defects, poor workmanship or faulty components. A change in functionality is neither a manufacturing fault, a faulty component nor poor workmanship on your handset.

I hear that you want to be able to change the bottom row of icons in your phone, and I definitely recommend against modifying the software on your phone for the same reasons you’ve outlined. Ultimately though, that functionality has now been removed from your phone so it is no longer a possibility.

Several enterprising experts in the Vodafone Community have suggested using alternative launchers such as GO launcher EX to restore some of this functionality. This is a safe alternative to modifying your firmware.

In the mean time I’ll keep passing on your feedback to Samsung; and, as I’ve said before, I strongly recommend that you do the same.

This is what I got from Samsung complaints department:

        “Dear Mathew,

In regards to your query, unfortunately we you can’t change the dock icons as they are locked in, this is actually due to a patent issue we had with another manufacturer.

This is not actually a fault of the handset but a design specification. It will not be changed in the future.
