I think the reports from MWC earlier this year claimed that this tablet (back then just known as the Galaxy Tab 10.1) carries a Tegra 2 SoC and not the Exynos 4210, which was stated to be in Galaxy S II units for selected markets only. This information could be wrong though, would love confirmation!

Android Honeycomb does not have an interface for calling or messaging in the same sense that Android Gingerbread does. The workarounds are to use a form of VoIP (such as Skype or Google Talk).

In any case, there are quite some confusion with this version “Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v” that you carry and the new and revised “Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1″ that they just announce. It will be clear if you can actually get a hold of someone in the know to clarify the situation before you disappoint customers.

To add to this, it’s probably stock Android Honeycomb plus some drivers specific to the hardware of the Galaxy Tab 10.1V. All manufacturers have to ensure that Honeycomb runs correctly with the particular hardware feature set on their products. That is the reason why devices can’t be upgraded simultaneously even when Google releases updates, the open source portion of the Android OS has to be combined with the closed source drivers and tested before it is re-released for each device!

From what AT is saying, it sounds like there will be no Vodafone apps integrated in the system, just whatever changes Samsung had to make to get Honeycomb working.

I know from reading GSMarena that there will be a Samsung 10.1v and then slimmer versions available.

Now the 10.1v which is being sold by Vodafone will be running pure Android Honeycomb 3.0, where as the slimmer versions will be released with Samsung branded Honeycomb 3.0 software.

Now in regards to updates: Theoretically, the Samsung branded software on the slimmer versions will have updates provided by Samsung themselves

What will be the case of updates for the Samsung 10.1v ? Will they be provided by Google themselves as it hasnt been rebranded / tweaked by Samsung.

Or will Samsung release two versions of updates, one for pure Android version (10.1v) and one for the Samsung branded software?

And just a follow up regarding if it will be locked or unlocked when purchased Outright.

    Hi Vodafone,
There is a real risk of driving ready to go customers away with this secret squirrel business. Especially when Motorola xoom’s are readily available for online order delivered to Syd for about $650. We geeks have very little patience and we will just go and buy something else instead of waiting.
If you are hoping to build some kind of iPad2 hype – it won’t work. We are not disciples like the Apple fans. We are happy to buy from anywhere.
Also, given the recent publicity regarding the vodafone data network, I would have thought that keeping strong prospects happy would be paramount

Just to let you know that a rep told me they are offloading these to Vodafone and a thinner version with more bang for your buck will come out straight after they got rid of these ‘dumped’ originals and will be available from all carriers.

the thinner version is not that different it’s only thinner by 2mm which is bugger all but if you really care about that then it may be worth waiting, the other differences are the thinner version has an SD card slot but it has a reduced camera on the back at 3mp plus at the moment as far as i am aware there is only the wifi version which is why it is cheaper.
i personally dont need more than 16gb so i dont care about micro sd card slot. i would rather the 8mp camera on the back and 2mm diff in thickness i really dont care about. the 10.1v also runs the stock android honeycomb 3.0 whereas the 10.1 has samsungs touchwiz ui. after using the samsung galaxy s i’d rather not have touchwiz on my tablets. plus the thinner version is not released until 8th June and so far that is US only. so you’ll need to wait a minimum of 2 months but probably longer and thats if it even gets released here.

Never mind I found what I needed. The newer version loses the 8mp camera back to a 3mp camera. This one still looks pretty good to me.

That’s not really true, technically. Yes, the new version will be thinner, but the camera is better (8mp vs 3mp) on the 10.1v. I think there is an improvement in the memory expansion on the newer version as well. But that’s the price you pay for being an early adopter.

The thinner one actually has less bang, camera is no where near as good and it is full of samsung crap, the up sides of the new one are memory cards and the size.

    Dear Vodafone/Samsung,

I just want to say straight up: It’s not you, it’s me.

I always knew things were going to be hard, and I’m sure you tried as best as you could to make things work between us.

I appreciate that you were clear and up front about what I should expect from our relationship. I have to admit that when you set these expectations up, I knew straight away that I was going to have trouble keeping things together until the time when our relationship could flourish. The simple fact is that I am an impulsive, impatient, but reasonably intelligent person.

At first our relationship seemed like a match made in heaven. I had what you wanted, and you had what I thought I wanted. Don’t get me wrong, I did know that what you were offering wasn’t exactly what I wanted, but for the most part it met my current needs. But sometimes you have to think about the future.

I never meant to end things before they even began. I guess you just left me with too much time alone lately to sit and think. The more I have thought, the more I have realised that our relationship was doomed from the beginning. I shouldn’t have waited this long to make my decision, and I feel terrible for leading you along over this time.

But it has come to a point where I have no choice but to be completely honest with you. Late last night I fell in love with another. Yes, I have been unfaithful. I cannot apologise to you enough for this. I don’t want to make excuses, but I was drinking, and I suppose I must be more impulsive when I drink. I have known her for a little while now, but until last night we were only acquaintances. I’d never thought any more of her than a person normally would feel for an acquaintance. But over this past week or so, for some unknown reason, she became more attractive to me.
I have to admit, I always thought you were cooler to look at. Your curves, the way you feel, your sleek lines… you still do look stunning, but you can’t judge a book by its cover. She may not look quite as good, but the way she accessorises herself really makes up for any of her visual inadequacies.

Please don’t think this has been an easy decision for me. I can assure you that it hasn’t been. Over the past week I have sought counsel from my closest friends and family, people who only know you, people who only know her, and people who know you both. It was strange though, because nearly everybody seemed to have the same advice: that you weren’t right for me. I guess I just couldn’t see it – love IS blind you know.
I thought about giving our relationship a little more time to see how things panned out, but I just felt like I was delaying the inevitable.

One of the most difficult things about forming a relationship with her was that she was on another continent. In fact, this was one of the biggest conundrums I faced over the past week. But after last night, her and I came to an arrangement, and she assures me she will be here with me in 5-7 days.
The last I heard she was already on her way to the airport, although I wouldn’t expect her flight to arrive in Australia until Monday.

Please don’t think I am a bad person. This is not something that I would normally do. In fact, I try to think long and hard before entering into a relationship of this nature. The investment I would have had to make for our relationship to work was somewhat bigger than I normally would (for me anyway)
    .

In some ways I am pleased that you have given me this time to think. If you hadn’t, it could’ve ended badly for us both. Admittedly, it would have been worse for me than you.

I know that I really haven’t given you adequate time to meet the expectations that you set out for our relationship. But as I said earlier, I am impatient. I appreciate the time and effort you have put in to try and make things work.

Now, I’m not saying that things between us will never happen in the future. I’m just saying that now is not the right time. Maybe in a few years our paths will cross again. Apart from my impulsiveness and impatience, I think something we could both work on for next time is our communication. I never heard from you. Sometimes, it got really hard. I just wanted to know that you were thinking of me, or planning for our future. But it was like
you didn’t even know I existed.

I wish you all the best for the future and I ask that you please don’t try to contact me. It will only make this already difficult decision even harder for me.

    It’s over…

This is the third device launch I have followed on Vodafone. Everytime they have been extremely vague about the launch until the day of the launch or hours before at best. The previous two times it was so they could swallow up a bunch of new customers – and we all know what happened because of that policy.

Extremely irritating and it only furthers the resentment from their customers. They definitely do not seem to be paying much notice to the feedback on this. Unfortunately they know that they have the product that everyone wants, so they just don’t care.

Anyway, there seems to be a loophole that is allowing certain people to place their orders so that they will receive their 10.1v before the rest of us. Isn’t that great? We cannot even place a PREORDER. Some people have already paid Vodafone money and have an invoice with a delivery date confirmed.

If I don’t get a 10.1v, despite having pre-registered many weeks ago, I’m taking all my services off Vodafone, this company just reeks of corporate greed.

Do I still get the free bonus gift case if I pre order it on 20th April? When the device will be deliver to my hands if I pre order it in 20 April? Will it be later than 4th May? Is that possible I can pre order and pick it up in store? What if I change my mind after I used the device? I mean is there a cooling off period? Thanks in advance.

I am not currently a Vodafone customer.

I pre-registered for the Galaxy Tab 10.1v about 1-2 weeks ago.

I intend to purchase outright for $729 and I assume I will get a prepaid sim card with the tablet.

Q1. Am I eligible for the pre-sale on 20th April and if so how do I actually purchase on that day?

Q2. Assuming yes to Q1, am I eligible to receive the free case?

Q3. Is there an instore pickup option as I am rarely home during the day?

      Hi Brian,

      Sorry for the late reply

      1. Yes you will be charged upfront, we are aiming to deliver them earlier but they should arrive no later than the first week of May.
      2. This is a limited edition (as published) and once we sell out they are all gone – its first in first served so best to order on the day!
      3. Although we try and give preference to existing customers on new devices we can’t for the Galaxy Tab due to the limited quantities.
      4. I’m chasing this up as i’m typing, hoping i can update everyone in the next day or so.

Below are the answers we got from Samsung
Voice calls – yes you can make calls using Skype, Fring or other Android / device compatible VoIP application. But you can’t make general calls like you could with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7″ tablet we released earlier
SMS – the device has the ability to only receive incoming text and only from operators
          MMS – not supported

Hope this clears up any confusion

Very disappointing. This plus the poor data transfer speeds I put up with on my phone means I’ll never shop with Vodafone again.
By the way, I’m in the IT industry and I tell all my clients not to bother with Vodafone because of the poor data transfer speeds. Now I can add not delivering on promises to the list of reasons.

Well no emails for me and I too pre-registered weeks ago and it appears that you just have to ring Vodafone and order anyway – what a joke… especially when all they kept saying was pre-register and you will be informed how to be one of the first to buy it.

Well this has all backfired for both Voda and Samsung as they should have taken pre-orders. If I was committed to a pre-order I would probably have ended up buying this but now, Thankfully, I will be buying a better and cheaper tablet that will probably be in my hands only a week later than the Galaxy would have been.

If you are fed up and want a cheaper and much better tablet then check out the ASUS Transformer as it rocks and that is what I will be buying.

    Thanks for nothing Vodafone!!

The first gentleman told me that no outright could be purchased over the phone and I needed to go to the website http://www.vodafone.com.au to buy it, and the website was ready. (How can they provide this faulty information to customers?) I knew it was a joke, the guy might still be in the dream, so I called up again and a kind lady helped me. I was so excited when voda announced that Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v would be released in mid-April. I waited for two weeks and no news at all so I ordered my Motorola XOOM. I had been playing with it for the past two weeks until voda finally announced the actual date for PREORDER.. which is not in mid-April as promised. But anyway, it doesn.’t matter for me now. I am one happy guy with something to play with over Easter whereas all of you here are waiting for the 10.1v. To be honest, the release date is too close to the actual 10.1 galaxy tab release so I wonder how many of you people out there would actually buy it and regret after few months because the 10.1 is released with microsd slot.

Vodafone, please learn from this launch and do not make so many mistakes with your product launches again.

You need to have all stakeholders informed and involved with launches like this. Plan things out a bit better – the pointless pre-register email process, lack of preparedness of the call centres, the incongruity between blog / call centre / facebook / twitter, lack of up to date information on release date and of course the big delay and broken promise are just inexcusable in this day and age.

Consumer visibility of your mis-steps is extremely high in this day and age of interest forums (you should have your Whirlpool reps for instance also monitoring the phone hardware threads where people discuss the ordering and delivery process) where everyone shares there experiences and information moves as fast as our fingers can over our keyboards.

You sell the devices and provide the network that allows us all to get information super quickly, you ought to utilise it as well. I’ve ordered a 10.1v, so I’m sticking around for another 12 months at least, but this is my third ridiculous product launch experience with you guys. These farcical launches have got to stop, I can’t take another.

you have it the wrong way around, yes this is the old version but it was renamed 10.1v (v) for vodafone, the new lighter thinner one is now refferred to as the 10.1.
Us Aussies have not been fooled if you read the entire post you will see this has been disscused at length.
Google both products and compare the specs, Personally i dont think 10.1 is better than the 10.1v i prefer to have a tablet with an 8mp camera on the back and 1080p recording as opposed to a tab 2mm thinner with only 3mp camera on back and 720p recording. yes the thinner version has a microsd slot but i dont need that.

Poor effort. Just informed that my order has not even left the warehouse. Apparently only orders placed on 18 & 19 April have shipped. My order was placed on 20 April. Given that there was a 2 week gap between orders and first shipments it makes no sense at all that they weren’t all shipped together. What particularly annoys is that over $700 has already benn charged to my credit card.

The pre-order price is not cheaper and we don’t get anything special for waiting so long with the credit card charged early. It would have been better to come into the store to purchase.

I called the 1300 number on the community blog and got to india who told me they can’t look up the order and i need to call sales. Called sales today and got hung up on by one guy who told me he can’t track it and then I called back and spoke to a girls who was very helpful in tracking the tab to sydney.

So I also pre-ordered the tab for no cheaper than the release date, with no extra goodies and I am going to receive the tab LATER than the release date.

    For the problem :

“I got my Tab V10.1 yesterday… it has been okay in the morning…
all in a sudden…. the bookmarks in the default Browser is gone…. and I could not see the address bar in the browser…. have tried almost everything but unable to re-enable them.

    Solution :

I called Vodafone, conference call with an Engineer from Samsung. Found no way of fixing the problem. (N.B. Suggestion from other threads on Android Honeycomb suggested enabled sync on Google Bookmark might triggered the problem. This problem seems to happen also to Motorola Xoom tablet, which is also using Android 3.0).

The final solution is to Restore to Factory setting (Clear Personal Data),

    Thanks

    Hi Vodafone,

I would like to know how to monitor my data usage on my new galaxy tab 10.1v?

3g watchdog and other data usage apps do not work on honeycomb.
My Vodafone takes way too long to update and I called billing and they said they only have usage updates every 24 hours too.

It will be hard to see how i’m tracking with my 1.5 GB limit if I don’t know how much data I’ve used.

    Thanks,

        Vodafone Usage Plus – AUD$0.99

I tiried both vodafone usage and quota – neither worked they both fail to login. Also i think these apps only get the info available from myvodafone which i can look at myself but the problem is it’s a couple of days old. If i am getting close to my limit near the end of the month i want to know exactly how much data i have left not be out by a couple of days worth of downloads because myvodafone takes so long to update. Any other solution?

    1) Does the tablet has any slot for any memory card expansion ?
    2) Does the tablet support HDMI output ? Rumor on the internet are very confused, some say no, some say use a microSD/HDMI converter, some say use the docking station. Can you please clarify ? If need additional accessories, does it available from Vodafone or Samsung ?
    3) Will it support Honeycomb 3.1 ?

DO NOT BUY THIS VODAFONE SAMSUNG TABLE 10.1v . I had this one pre sales bought before going to the store. I did try to google and search for specifications and other information and nothing was available in the internet as it was not released. So I had to rely on the specifications on the special vodafone website for pre sales before release. It said, it had micro SD and USB connectivity.

Because of that, I paid $729 and on the 5th of may 2011 I received the item. As soon as I received , I checked the unit. It had no micro SD card and no USB port / slot. Instead USB connectivity was useless as it could not be connected with protable disk. Samsung did not even give the manual for this item. I had to call samsung and they told me that samsung did not produce it and I had to get it from google. But I insisted to ask for manual as I did not believe samsung did not create it one for its product because motorola xoom comes with the manual. After contacting the sales people, I managed to get the manual 3 days later.

I complained to vodafone for misleading the advertisement to make me believe that vodafone 10.1 v had the micro SIM card as the specification said so. The funny thing was that when I complained to vodafone, the following day they removed the specification from the website. This specification is the revised one without mentioning the SD card. i won the case and got compensation from vodafone.

Apparently none of the vodafone people had a clue what they were selling initially.

Three days ago I did a google and found the following thing:

Samsung released Galaxy tab 10.1v in australia through vodafone without micro SD Card and USB port / slot.
Samsung released Galaxy tab 10.1 in US only on the 7th of June 2011 that has micro SD Card, USB port and also thinner…

I was fooled by samsung as they posted the wrong specification initially. I regretted from buying with them but then vodafone refunded some money to compensate me. I hope this helps.

Come on AT! Vodafone buys off Samsung every single 10.1v worldwide but is unable to get an update from Samsung about when/if Android 3.1 will be available?

I won’t admit this to any of my iPad wielding mates but 3.0 is a bit buggy….Ok fine it’s really buggy but I still love it and want to love it more. I want to show off the awesome features of honeycomb without the fear of being embarrassed by a force close. I want the browsers UAstring to stay in desktop when I set it to desktop. I want flash hardware acceleration. I want a faster and smoother UI. I want to use a mouse or a joystick etc etc

So can somebody at Vodafone please pickup the phone and call a Samsung higher-up and find out if we will be seeing honeycomb 3.1. I don’t mind waiting but not knowing if it’s even coming one month on is disappointing. All the other Android Tablets out there have confirmed its coming but not the 10.1v. Your a telecommunications company, time to start doing some telecommunicating ;)

It’s been over a month since I’ve purchased the Galaxy Tab10.1v and i still haven’t received my free book case.. When i call the guys at the Vodafone store, they have no clue to what’s going on. Could someone explain the situation??. Also when will the 10.1v be updated to Android 3.1. All the other Tablets out there on the market already are, and The GalaxyTab10.1v is supposed to be a Google Experience Device with no Samsung overlays on top. We should have been one of the first to get the update.. Would like a reply soon!!..

dont expect any update or support from samsung for this device

it was a “mistake” from samsung and they corrected it by realizing the thinner version

giving them 2 vodafone and releasing them before the thinner version was a “wise” decision.

My Samsung 10.1V turns off by itself if I don’t use it for an hour, I then need to reboot it… This so annoying I tried calling Samsung and they just said to speak to Vodafone, Spoke to Vodafone and they said speak to Samsung, If this doesn’t get sorted I’m gonna take Vodafone to the TIO for not supporting a product they are retailing.

      Hi Eugene,

Sorry, but the Galaxy Tab 10.1v was a limited edition release. We are however going to range the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
