Is this “the One”? Say hello to the new HTC One

Update 04/04/2013

We’ve announced our plans for pre-sale! All details are in this new blog post, with full plans to be released when pre-sale begins at 9:00am tomorrow (05/04/2013).

Original post:

HTC’s latest flagship, the new HTC One, was announced overnight at joint presentations in London and New York.

4.7″ 1080p display. Android 4.1.2 “Jelly Bean” with HTC’s New Sense. A quad-core Snapdragon processor. Ultrapixel Camera with image stabilisation. Full aluminium body. Twin forward-facing stereo speakers.

While the specs on paper are impressive, where this new superphone really shines is in the experience.

The new HTC One on Vodafone

We have been selected as one of the global launch partners for the HTC One and we will be offering some great deals very, very soon.

What we can tell you though is that the HTC One will work great on our new 4G network which we’ve recently started testing.

Although we don’t have too many other details right now, we’ll be back here on the blog to announce some shortly.

Keep your eyes here on the blog, or on your preferred social network (Twitter, Facebook, Google+) and we’ll let you know as soon as there’s more new to share.

In the meantime though, we’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

New Sense

HTC has given its take on Android a complete overhaul. The 3D flip-clocks and glossy icons have been stamped flat for a more clean and minimal aesthetic.

HTC BlinkFeed introduces a brand new way to consume content on the go; bringing your news, social updates and calendar appointments to the forefront in a Flipboard-inspired interface.

Ultrapixel Camera

HTC reckon that we’ve been bamboozled by the “megapixel myth”. Its new Ultrapixel camera uses a smaller number of physical pixels in favour of larger ones that capture more light.

Add in higher quality sensor and optical image stabilisation and it delivers some of the best mobile photography results we’ve ever seen, especially in low light environments.

Zoe

When you open the Camera App on the HTC One, it immediately begins recording. When you press the shutter key, it takes the previous second of footage and two more afterwards to deliver a “living photo”.

The best part is you can play back this short video and snap full resolution photos right from the footage, ensuring you always catch the best moment even if it happened before you hit the button.

BoomSound

In what’s sure to be a boon for those who love to show off videos on their phone (and a nuisance for commuters sharing a carriage with somebody who’s forgotten their headphones), the HTC One features twin, stereo, front-facing speakers backed up with Beats Audio integration.

Our early tests have blown us away with the clarity and volume of sound this sturdy pocket stereo produces.

Our thoughts

We’ve been quietly testing the One for a few weeks now, so we’ve asked our handset testers for their initial thoughts on the HTC One.

“I love having all my feeds on the home screen, it makes being able to stay up to date with everything important to me really easy and quick. I also love the battery life, having a cutting edge smartphone with a large screen easily lasting a full day and more is a big plus for me!”

- Lawrence Sank, Device Portfolio Manager

“The overall feel of New Sense is so much nicer too. Everything is just so “clean” and well finished, it feels miles ahead of anything else running Android right now. It feels trimmed down and much more efficient.”

- Bruno Ferreira, Social Media Representative

“The Beats music really rocks my socks off and the HD screen is crystal clear!”

- Jeremy Evans, Technical Support Specialist

Usually u will be able to just switch the sim into your new HTC One if you buy the unlocked version. However you may need to change you sim card size as The One takes a micro sim.

How about you fix your 2G before you talk about 3G? YOUR Tech Dept told me to set my phone on 2G to stop voice and data drop outs that still occur. Tech support repeat the same mantras about “network upgrades in 3 months” they were saying over 12 months ago. Time to stop promising and start delivering. Cheap rates don’t compensate for poor quality.

Don’t count on 4g anytime soon. They will go on about how it’s round the corner, in testing etc etc but it wont quite get there. I’m predicting earliest 2014. Voda tech support notorious for this. Fabled network upgrades always happening in the next 3 months but never quite happen.

definition of roll out can always be argued.
Rolled out to 1km radius is not exactly what customers have in mind.

Very nice indeed, great specifications and no doubt will sell well. I still prefer the Sony Z when available – as a disappointed HTC Desire HD user with no end of problems operating on Vodafone 2100 network, slow process with upgrades then to find out HTC dumped the product after 18 month so I’m not sure I trust HTC. After more than two years of slow data speeds, calls dropping off, perhaps it’s time to move on. Still I wish HTC & Vodafone all the luck and hope that eventually get their act together.

    Few questions:

    1) 3G+ is HSPA+ right?
    2) If so, does this phone support HSPA+

I was thinking while 4G rolls out, I can upgrade to this phone and at least enjoy the 3G+ speeds.

I notice with interest that Vodafone has not replied to your questions. Significant?

The HTC website does not specifically indicate support for HSPA+.

As, like many others, I’m never likely to see 4G in my area I am wanting to upgrade to a 3G+ capable phone.

Pretty close! 3G+ uses DC-HSPA+ (Dual Carrier-High Speed Packet Access) technology and this phone will support it.

I am still on the Three network and my contract ends in March. So far I have been getting good service from Three and great loyalty discounts on my plan. I have been wondering whether I should sign up with Vodafone considering all the negative customer feedback. Also, none of the phones on the current catalogue really appeal to me. I am however, very interested in both Xperia Z and HTC One (One more so, as I currently use a HTC Desire HD and am very happy with HTC phones). Vodafone staff at my nearest shop have been less than helpful regarding upgrades. I would gladly sign a contract if i am offered either phone as part of a good deal otherwise, the HTC One is fortunately being launched with almost all major carriers and one of them is bound to provide it on an affordable plan!

      Hi Sid,

Both phones look great! If you’re happy with the service on Three then you’ll be happy with the service on Vodafone as Three is now using the Vodafone Network. It’s disappointing to hear you haven’t had the experience we want for our customers when visiting the store, we would love to see you upgrade with us.

Once the phones have been released please post on our Community forum here: http://community.vodafone.com.au and we will look into the best deals and offers for you individually to upgrade.

If you don’t like your service on Vodafone, move rather than consistently complain about how crap your service is. I’ve been on all 3 telcos and Vodafone is by far the best in my opinion.

  14. Jason says:

To be honest the pricing of this phone, for existing customers, through Vodafone will be the deciding factor as to whether or not I stay with Vodafone.

My contract (with a Desire HD) ran out in December and I have refused to move to the new pricing schemes because I just don’t find them as appealing as the deal I was already getting (same price, less data). So I’ve been waiting for a new phone that takes my fancy. But, with poor network speeds, constant drop outs and a lack of 3G coverage where I live (in metro Adelaide) on the frequency that the Desire HD operates on (meaning every time I go home I have to switch the phone to 2G), I’ve put up with a mixed last 2 years with Vodafone.

The pricing of the One, certainly for existing customers, will need to be SHARP!!!

hi there the new HTC one, sounds like it could be a hit, i have the HTC one x, unbelievable phone have had it since June 2012 so far no probs awesome phone and i use everything on it..
I also have been with Vodafone since Aug 2010 yes you guys have had your issues with calls dropping out slow data speeds for a long time now saying youve spent 1 billion dollars and stuff, The experience still has me frustrated, i live in the Gold Coast area but work in Gladstone have travelled to Rockhampton, and Gracemere, Stanwell all in the Central Qld district, overall all the reception has improved but a long way to go yet..
Now i have to start speaking Indian its very hard to understand what the operators are saying when talking, its very lucky you guys pay for the call and not me.
Finally the HTC one i would very much like to get my hands on a HTC one, i am only 9 months into my second contract with Vodafone firstly can i still purchase that phone while im on this contract without changing anything and secondly will there be any free gifts with this phone when released in Australia..

We don’t have any pricing on this phone as yet but there is always options to upgrade. At 9 months into a contract a Mobile Payment Plan would probably be the cheapest option, which involves paying extra per month to add another handset.

We can certainly have more of a chat with you about your upgrade options as well as any network issues you’re facing, just come see us on our Community here: http://community.vodafone.com.au/

Gee m8 ,if ur not happy move to Telstra and pay big big bucks for ur plan. If I was a business person in a remote area needing near perfect reliability that would be an option. Never had a problem with my phone calls dropping out, when Vodafone put out some very well priced plans a couple of years back the response was overwhelming and they didn’t have the capacity to cope. During this period I found my phones internet was so slow & used to drop out.But this improved after they after they increased their capacity & now is very good since I updated to a HTC One X which has the 850 spectrum added which has made a big difference to my internet speed.Did a speed test the other day & it was faster than the mobile broadband on my laptop which is on a Telstra plan.

As we’re not stocking this phone just yet, I’m able to say in relation to the pricing. If you’re looking at taking out a new contract or you are eligible to upgrade with no fees, you won’t pay anything upfront for the phone. There just might be a mobile payment plan attached with the $40 plan as it’s a lower cost plan. For example you’d pay $40 per month for the plan + $X per month for 24 months to pay off the new phone.

Keep an eye on our website and blog for more launch info!

      Cheers,
      Madeleine

          Hi Rav,

If your contract period has just ended, you’ll be in a good position to get this new phone without any of the fees that can be associated with an early upgrade. The pricing is something we can’t confirm at the moment, but we’ll be sure to keep you in the loop as soon as we have more information.

          Thanks,

how laughable & comical as well, people quoting re. the ph being attractive or hope that it is, well at least when it start’s freezing & lagging etc.. you can then at least wear it around your neck !

the people that go down the path of going for a ph. that looks good are the exact clowns that get one cause ” MY FREIND HAS ONE & I WANT ONE AS WELLL ” are the clowns that will never use the ph, to its capacity & capabilities well to those people as long as you know how to make a call & OH YEAH ! send an SMS as well ….(0_o)
    * go figure .

( have been thrashing the ph for a month now & seems to be holding up ok. hopefully they’ll release one with a memory card slot )

    HTC one?
so is it a htc one sv that vodafone already sells?
or is it the htc one xl that telstra sells and is better than the sv?
what is the reception like that is my big question
telstra has given the xl a blue tick but vodafone doesnt sell one
only reason i will stay with vodafone is the plan i am on now ( free facebook ect )
telstra is tempting if the service doesnt improve

This phone tops in Mobile Congress 2013 (in Spain), over the Sony Xperia Z. I hope Voda can offers some lower plan e.g. $19 and $25, for this phone. Personally I don’t mind to pay a higher hand set price, such as $30-$40 for a 12 months – $19 contracts. I hope Voda will listen to their customer, as more and more customer is dropping out to Telstra / Optus. Recently I did find a better internet reception along Epping to Chatswood train line (NSW). Maybe when Voda customer switching to Telstra / Optus, leaving less customer using Voda, hence, network improve =P

I wonder when will the HTC One will launch in Australia, as far as I concern all carriers in Australia will have the HTC One. Also I think Taiwan is releasing HTC One tomorrow (7th). I am hoping this is an indicator that we will have the phone in Australia very soon as well!

Please Voda, release the phone earlier or on the exact same day as the other carriers, don’t disappoint us anymore

I don’t know who are those people who still complain about Vodafone network but it works better now between my home which is in hills district to city of Sydney. I carry both the Telstra network phone (iPhone 4S work phone) and Vodafone (Nokia N9), Vodafone has better signal than Telstra in certain place on my morning and evening travels. I used to have issues with Vodafone/ 3 before but now it seems it is better. Both are 3G.

I sometimes tether from N9 to iPhone, especially when i want to watch Youtube.

I agree there are so many better deals out there now than there were when I last renewed.

There’s just better value plans out there… for example, majority of network/resellers offer unlimited data now on plans as low as $30. Whereas Vodafone only offer that at top end only.

By far the best HTC in the last two years. Ever since Desire came out all the followups had been a bit of a bore. The last HTC i used was HD2 and that was excellent.

    • Every phone has its flaws... says:

bought the xperia z and sold it the next day.. overall awesome phone, super fast (faster than S3) and apps are good.. but the battery dies way too quick for heavy users, and wifi is poor (my galaxy s – 4 years old) has better wifi signal. The xperia wifi is useless, they’ve had issues with this in previous models too (so ive read).
HTC One looks promising! Ive owned the HTC Sensation xt and it was pretty good. Sense was a little overcrowded and crashed a little, but overall it wasnt a bad phone.
Only phones i havent really had issues with are the galaxy range from samsung. I havent really tried the new nokia’s, LG’s or Motorolla’s though.
If i were getting a new phone, id probably wait for the galaxy s4.
dual speakers on the HTC are arent as exciting as they’re made out to be given they’re 8cm apart.. it wont make much difference to sound quality, but will probably help with volume.

As for the vodafone network, i have no comment, i left a while ago to go to telstra so i dont know how much voda has improved (or not). With telstra the service is clearer, internet is faster etc… but probably not worth the extra $20 a month, but at least i dont want to slam my phone against the wall everytime a call drops out. you get what you pay for! Stop complaining!

Do you have an option to pre-order or subscribe to updates on the release date?

I can subscribe for the Galaxy S4, but I could not find anything for the HTC One.

The HTC website has a link to register for updates from Optus and Telstra but no mention of Vodafone. This gives the impression that Vodafone will be getting stock much later than Optus and Telstra, if at all.

What about pricing? I am interested to see the comparison between getting the phone on a contract or purchasing outright and going on a month to month plan

Quite Simple – Samsung has lots more marketing gurus and money to buy off carriers with and organise Exclusives.
I could have sworn I saw HTC One on the VFone front page breifly just after the announcement.
But I suspect now there is an arrangement with Samsung to be the only Android Phone featured on the VFone front page.

I think it’s a little simpler than that. The Samsung Galaxy series has been incredibly successful. The SIII is the biggest-selling high-end Android phone of its generation. The success of the S4 is virtually guaranteed, unlike the HTC One which is still seen as a gamble and/or a last ditch attempt by HTC to capture a good slice of the high-end market.

I am super excited for the One and will be purchasing one as soon as it comes out, and moving to Vodafone from 3 in the process. My Google Nexus One has had a good run… :)

No mailing list… yet you offer pre-order registratoin for the Galaxy S4.

To me it seems that Vodafone will not be getting the HTC One, even HTC themselves said to me that the phone will be available to Optus and Telstra only.

Looks like my 4 phones business will be going elsewhere, ever since Vodafone took over 3 I have had nothing but issues and have been treated like dirt, I was with 3 around 10 years and there was customer loyalty benefits, Vodafone have not carried this over and for sure my business will go elsewhere.

No customer service, no reception, cannot supply phones others can, promises I will be called back to rectify issues.

Makes me wonder how much longer Vodafone will exist for.

It’s possible the reason why voda don’t have a release date is because they don’t have stock of it yet, and with Michael’s comment, it relates to HTC announcing its HTC One release in Germany, UK & Taiwan. If Isabel was smart she would direct her comments to HTC rather than voda seeing that HTC are the ones making announcements for releases in other countries.

release date has been pushed to late April :-(

but will Vodafone get stock as soon as its arrived in Aus?

The S4 was up on your website the day it was officially unveiled, yet there is still no mention of the HTC ONE. Combine that with the HTC website only having links to Telstra and Optus to register for updates on the release gives the impression that Vodafone will not receive stock as soon as it arrives in the country.

Please give us an option to register or pre-order the HTC One, as I am sure stock will run out as quickly as its received.
