Software Update Weekly Wrap – 1st August, 2012

Update 03/08/2012:

I’m pleased to announce that we have now granted approval for the Android 4.0.4 update to the Samsung GALAXY Note (N7000B). Keep an eye on our blog for further information related to roll-out.

Original post:
Welcome to this week’s Weekly Wrap! This post will give you all the information we currently have on software updates working their way through our labs.

What will this post tell me?

The information in this Weekly Wrap only details information on software updates that manufacturers have advised are currently under preparation for submission, or have physically provided to Vodafone for testing and certification. Although you may hear news about updates from around the web and overseas, please be aware that local delivery timelines can differ. This is due to local hardware variants and Australian regulatory requirements.

What will this post not tell me?

We rely on our manufacturing partners to develop software updates prior to submission to us for testing and certification. We will only provide news on an update once the manufacturer has confirmed its forthcoming availability to Vodafone. However, due to the fluid nature of this development process, delivery schedules may shift and a previously communicated update may not enter testing.

What’s in the labs?

The table below lists all updates that are currently undergoing the various stages of testing.

wat’s the manufacturing prepping for so long? JB was release simultaneously for both Nexus S and GN, now Nexus S has even failed testing but GN is still not wit vodafone :( … any possibilities of vodafone chasing up sammie and get the latest info to its customers on what exactly is holding them back? its been ages since JB has been released by Google.

I don’t see anything wrong with this post, in fact i agree this testing is taking far too long to get this update out for the Xperia S. There is nothing misleading or deceptive, You should expect these types of responses with the limited information you supply and the expectations that most users have for there devices. They paid good hard earned money for them, why can’t they question.

the Xperia S update, i’m a Vodafone corporate customer and we have staff with this phone, we are hoping for better battery and speed out of the device. Just taking a long time to get this out that’s all. So yes i have a few HTC One X’s and lots of other vodafone branded phones through our account. Being in IT we check the blog regulary to update staff on updates being released.

Hi Jason, thanks for clarifying that for me. As an IT professional yourself I’m sure you can understand the need for thorough testing before deploying any new software into a live environment (be it on desktop or mobile). Rest assured that the work we’re doing is to ensure the best possible experience for our customers, and as soon as the update meets our requirements we’ll grant approval to Sony to begin roll out.

Terrible. From being the exclusive carrier to put out JB on Nexus S but ending up being probably the last carrier worldwide to put it out. This is the last time I buy Vodafone. From now on, it’s unlocked and manual flashing of updates. I get that there are checks that have to be done but seriously, we get the slowest updates out of the entire world. Seriously, even Pakistan got it over a month ago and we’re still waiting.

Step up the update time or I’m moving off to Telstra or Optus. I’m sick of being last to get updates.

transcript with HTC live chat.. an interestign snippet.:

    16:02:47 [Aaron B] :
XDA has proven this argument a farce with developers having produced several stable versions of ics for dhd
    16:03:51 [Jef] :
I’m sorry Aaron, but XDA has a different developer compare to HTC.
    16:04:21 [Aaron B] :
they are still working with the same product
    16:05:21 [Jef] :
Yes I understand but we need to reconsider some factor first like how it will effect our partnership with other company or manufacture that the HTC have.
    16:06:06 [Aaron B] :
so the problem is actually a commercial partnership issue
    16:07:17 [Jef] :
You see Aaron, there’s a lot of factory like what I meantion but yes one of those reason are that. Like what I said, XDA has a different developer than the HTC Developer because there’s a lot of factor that we need to reconsider.
    16:08:24 [Aaron B] :
so what i’m reading from you is. DHD update will not be provided due to a commercial partnership issue and not entirely a hardwar issue?

Hi Aaron, just so it’s absolutely clear I’d like to address this directly for you. After extensive testing, HTC determined that the current version of HTC Sense with Android provides customers with the best experience on the HTC Desire HD. We (Vodafone AU) want you to have the latest software but ultimately we do not develop updates ourselves, and rely on our manufacturing partners to do so.

At the time of learning the above news, we were still awaiting submission of second round software for further testing. I hope you understand that the update we had in-hand is not in a condition that’s suitable for release to our customers. All the information we have can be found in HTC’s blog post.

It will be interesting to see what HTC will do to quell the large amounts of disappointed DHD customers. Considering the investment in the product many of us have made on the basis it was going to be up to date for longer than a year and half after purchase.

Vodafone, guys do something, or you’ll start loosing customers. HTC now has already started work on JB for Telstra, how good is that. Well I will be moving to Telstra once my conract gets over. You raise a good point about the Jelly Bean update for the HTC One X – this is something I’ll raise with HTC in our next meeting. Thanks for bringing it up!

Sorry to read HTC has turned their back on Desire HD users. I had intention of upgrading to the HTC ONE X when my contract is due for renewal but I can no longer trust HTC for fear the same thing will happen with the One X. Perhaps the HTC ONE X will be equally redundant in 12 months as well. I appreciated and respect Vodafone have been working very hard to upgrade their network and to be fair in some locations the Desire HD on 2100 runs like a dream but not in the area where I live in Sydney, it’s just as bad today as it was nearly two years ago – 0.03Mbps download. Perhaps I should investigate my options for when my contract ends in October/November.

I have the One X and updates are quite slow. Easily 2-3 months wait after a release.

If you want quick updates. I recommend going with a Nexus device. Plenty of support and relatively quick updates compared to other manufacturers that use custom UIs

Hi Nigel, right now we’re waiting for the second round of testing to complete. Once this is done we can review the results and establish whether it’s ready, or whether an additional round of testing is required. Unfortunately asking how long an update will take to be tested is akin to asking how long a piece of string is.

Once again I am left underwhelmed by vodafone’s schedule. While we were all told a mid-july release of jelly bean for the galaxy nexus and nexus s, august has come and still no mention of when we will get it. It took less than a week to test jelly bean for the nexus s and put it up for roll out, yet more than two to fix the small error. And the galaxy nexus is still waiting to even hear anything of it. Meanwhile, testing goes ahead for minor updates to outdated phones. You have a very long way to come vodafone. I pay a lot of money for my nexus to receive the best and latest updates first And promptly. A service you seem unwilling to provide. Is it any wonder why people would root their phones and get the software they’re entitled to when they are supposed to, rather than wait many disappointing weeks/months for telcos who don’t deliver

1 for timothy about the nexus s.
But the gnex, I believe, is Samsung’s fault, not Vodafone’s. They themselves don’t have the update. But, are they not putting enough pressure on Samsung?? is there something completely messed up on the update that Samsung doesn’t want to send ?? (unlikely since the rest of the world has it). You or I don’t know, we can only complain, so complain away I guess.
I’m still wait for my jelly bean on my nexus s Vodafone!!! Google has done most/all the work for you, just push the damn update.

Hi Moose, I’m afraid that the testing we perform is significantly more complex than just popping the update onto a phone and “seeing how it feels” for a few days. Have a read through this three-part series on exactly what’s involved in getting an update from Google to your phone.

The third part deals the most with testing, and as you can see from this post there are a number of important reasons why we would block an update from release.

HTC not releasing ics for desire hd due to a partnership issue is most likely due to a patent issue.as for one x HTC have said they are testing jb for it. Sony xperia s update can’t be rolled out until Sony say it’s ok same with evo 3d HTC have to give Vodafone the ok to let it roll out so while Vodafone have approved an update its still down to manufacturer to green light it for roll out. As for nexus jb update those waiting for it should be contacting Google about it not blaming Vodafone. I think Vodafone are terrific whilst the coverage could be better but I’m not complaining. I don’t get full reception a lot but I can always get on internet send messages and make calls easy. Although it would be nice if Vodafone could match Telstra reception though. Go Vodafone. Ps anyone with a HTC phone you should consider changing brands as HTC is just holding its breath under water trying to survive until it dies HTC have already started to shut down in some countries like Brazil. Not only that HTC have been spending all its money on crap like beats audio which sucks anyway HTC have even started to sell off it share of beats ownership.

@Kieran = I think what vodafone (or any company for that matter) don’t realise is that customer’s aren’t “unconsciously aware” as they were say, 10 years ago.

everyone has a smart phone, the internet and the ability to search google.

for a company like vodafone to release updates like “we’ll let you know” its a slap in the face for a $19 cap customer, or a $149cap customer. i think you should treat us like you would treat your I.T teams

a real update would give logs of what you guys are actually doing. we want to know. paying customers want to know what our money is being used for. afterall kieran, VHA have lost 600,000 in under 12 months, which is for lack of a better term, crap.

so “well let you know” is one reason why customers hate vodafone and switch. the 2nd reason is your rediculous indian customer service team, but in the 9 years 3Hutchison was around, and the countless years VHA have been around – idiotic customer service has never improved so i guess my rant is falling on deaf years.

+1 on the “we’ll let you know”. The only time Vodafone “let’s you know” is the day it’s being released, never before. What good is that? Knowing when to expect the update is what I want. The day could be weeks away, it doesn’t matter, I just want to know when to expect it and that it WILL be released at that said time instead of leaving us guessing for another month.

If Pakistan could get it done during the first week and the rest of the world have it the next week, that really says something about how crap Vodafone is.

    Hi Kieran,
I was just wondering if you could tell me how long it took for HTC to roll out the ICS update on the Sensation range after it had Vodafone approval? I remember seeing that it did take them a bit to get moving and i figure its not like them to be any faster with the EVO 3D.

Hi Keiran, i’m following the posts here and have been hoping for a response to any comments regarding the Jelly Bean update for the Galaxy Nexus. Is the lack of response due to no information to share?

I also understand you may not have any information to share and if so, do you know where/how I can query Samsung Australia as to when they will get the update to Voda for testing.

I love new tech, testing new updates and was super-excited with the new Jelly Bean features…… this ‘not knowing’ is killing me.

    Eagerly awaiting a response,

Hi Tom, I’ve been pretty upfront regarding the update to the GALAXY Nexus and why is requires a separate build to to the update that’s rolled out overseas (optimisations for our 850MHz network). Right now the information in the table represents the latest news we have. Samsung have confirmed the update is coming, and that they are preparing the build for submission to us.

Once we receive it for testing I’ll share the info but right now the above is the latest. You can contact Samsung on any of the methods outlined on their website.

Hi Fuggtoe, I’m not quite sure I understand your question? The table is a reflection of the news we had on Wednesday, the post at the top is an update since then. Whether in a notice at the top or in the table the info is the same – we’ve approved it and are waiting on deployment by Samsung. Once there’s something additional to share beyond that, there will be a dedicated blog post (so keep an eye out).

Hi Hamish, as the arc S and Xperia S are different handsets, with different hardware, the update is actually quite different for each. The schedule for one device does not apply to a separate device. Once the testing is completed and the update is suitable for release we’ll let you know.

    WHERE IS JELLYBEAN?

    WHERE IS JELLYBEAN?

Is it sinking in yet? And please, don’t say “we’ll let you know”. You were the first carrier in the world to promise JB and you’re quickly becoming the slowest to actually put it out.

Hi, I have a nexus s, bought from a Vodafone store. It’s unlocked however. I now use a different carrier. Does the Vodafone update rely on the handset or the carrier you currently use? As an example, If I put in a vodafone sim card when you roll out the update, then return my current carriers sim card, will this effect the update?
I do however find it ironic that places like New Zealand, Portugal and Turkey have already received the 4.1 update..

i dont understand the term in this case – unlock ? if i am still getting the update from the vodafone even after unlocking the galaxy nexus which was sold by vodafone on 24 months plan. then why is it not that google releasing the jelly bean update to those who are no more locked to the vodafone or any other carrier – in this case being vodafone ?

hi all and kieran, ive spoken to HTC and so far there is no official line up on what phones from them will be getting the jellybean update. however i can confirm from them that the HTC Sensation XL will be getting a maintenance patch for bugs and polish, though this wont be clear when until testing of jelly been has been done so that they can decide whether that patch will be included in jelly bean or be a stand alone patch.

Hi Ashish, the update path always follows the handset and not the SIM card. Unlocking your device simply means that you can use other networks’ SIM cards in your device. It has no bearing on update eligibility, nor does it change how or when you will get the update.

If your device was sold by Vodafone in Australia, you will receive your update in-line with all other devices sold by Vodafone in Australia.
