Software Update Weekly Wrap – 5th September, 2012

Welcome to this week’s Weekly Wrap! This post will give you all the information we currently have on software updates working their way through our labs.

When will Jelly Bean be available for my phone?

We’re excited at the release of the latest version of Android and would be delighted to see this update roll out to our customers.

In addition to the recent upgrade for the Nexus S, at this stage the only other confirmations we have received regarding Jelly Bean are for the GALAXY Nexus and Samsung GALAXY S III.

We do not have any further information regarding potential upgrades to any other existing devices.

As more information is received from manufacturers, it will be added to the Weekly Wraps so be sure to check back each Wednesday for the latest news.

Ice Cream Sandwich for Sony Xperia S

We’re aware of the strong demand for the approval and release of Ice Cream Sandwich for the Sony Xperia S. Testing of this update has been completed however approval for release has not yet been granted.

We have provided our testing report to Sony and are currently awaiting their response to a number of outstanding queries. Until a response is received, we cannot grant approval to the update.

There is no further information on the status of this update or an ETA of availability at this stage.

What you need to know about our Weekly Wraps

We rely on our manufacturing partners to develop software updates prior to submission to us for testing and certification.

This Weekly Wrap contains any and all information on software updates that manufacturers are working on submitting to us for testing, or are already in our labs.

Although you may hear news about updates from around the web and overseas, please be aware that local delivery timelines can differ. This is due to local hardware variants and Australian regulatory requirements.

If the update you’re looking for isn’t included below, it means the manufacturer has not made any indication to us regarding their local plans for Australian release.

Once again, it proves my assumption is totally correct. Samsung is deliberately postponing the JB 4.1 for Galaxy Nexus. They will do this only after the Galaxy Note II release and now even after the JB for SIII.

Hi Xperia S Owner, the specific details of what’s causing the hold up can’t be divulged as they are protected by commercial agreements between ourselves and Sony. We want to see this update roll out as soon as possible but need to ensure everything is lined up correctly before release.

Jelly Bean is available on the unlocked Galaxy Nexus; as per usual, it is taking a month or two for ALL carriers to work through the updates with the manufacturers. This isn’t a deliberate ploy, this is business as usual for Android devices, regardless of carrier or manufacturer.

The appeal for vodafone/crazy johns competative plans will no longer apply and I WILL sign up with the company with the best coverage. This is continuously dissapointing.

Out of interest, is Vodafone a bit more fussy about quality updates than other providers? As in, is that why others have released ICS for Xperia S but Vodafone hasn’t? If so, I assume the wait is worthwhile, I just wish Sony would hurry up and respond to your queries.

i highly doubt it considering Vodafone let quite a few decent bugs throught there “quality testing” on the recent LH1 I9300T SGS3 update. one major bug being the app draw not being able to modified, where as the other carriers released there updates weeks before vodafone and yet have no bugs. its very sad…

Hi i9300 owner, the issue you’re describing is not actually a bug. Samsung have confirmed to us that this is a deliberate change in functionality. If other providers in Australia have already rolled this update (after a quick search I wasn’t able to find any examples though) it is my understanding that the same change will be made in future updates.

@Kye our problem is not exactly that Galaxy Nexus update is being delayed so much…..but as to why an older “Google” phone Nexus S gets the Jellybean through carrier so quickly while the latest “Google” phone is nowhere near getting it
Right now S3 is at the same level as the Google phone is update process…….so much for “Pure Google” :-(

    Hello Kieran

I posted a comment last week about DLNA on the Samsung Galaxy S3 not working since the recent 4.0.4 maintenance release. I have also noticed that streaming audio to bluetooth is also no where near as good as before the update. Now if I try streaming internet radio, it’s very choppy but I use a able, fine, so not a network issue. This was also fibe before the last update. Can you let Samsung know about these issues? I am hoping that these will be fixed with the pending Jelly Bean update.

    Thanks

I’m getting really over this drip drip waiting possibly if were good and we eat our vedgies the nice men will possibly dane to give us the latest software. Everybody keeps pointing the finger at samsung and saying they are delaying to feather their own products. I point the finger squarley at vodafone. You are a world wide company you SHOULD have enough clout to be able to demand a faster upgrade path than seems to be being offered. When I look at other telco’s in other conties who have the clout and have managed to get the upgrades. Like Sprint announced today for example http://support.sprint.com/support/article/Find_and_update_the_software_version_on_your_Galaxy_Nexus/case-uh277325-20120418-224152?INTNAV=SU:DP:MVT
I have to wonder why vodafone is prepared to sit back and take it.
You sould be out their fighting for your customers. afterall we buy the plans and contracts from you not from samsung.

Hi Ryno, the Sprint GALAXY Nexus is a separate (CDMA) hardware variant. In the same way the software builds for the international HSPA+ GALAXY Nexus are not suitable for the GT-i9250T we sell, the build for the Sprint variant is also not suitable.

There is currently no operator anywhere in the world which is testing Jelly Bean for the GT-i9250T.

  23. ryno says:

So the only real difference is a driver chnage between the cdma one and the hsdpa one. For a hardware setup that hasnt changed since I dunno 4.0.4.
So basically what you are saying is that sprint can get the software and hardware tested for a smaller more number of devices but Vodafone which operates globally cant exert enough pressure on the hardware vendor to get the sofware released for a handset that is now quite old and established.

Hi ryno, we have a standing arrangement with all of our suppliers that we expect all updates to be rolled out to our customers. We expect that Samsung will deliver the update to us in the coming days after which we will begin the testing process as a matter of priority. Mobile carriers do not code updates, that is the responsibility of the manufacturer. Software also needs to be tailored specifically to the hardware it will be running on to get the best performance out of the device. To be entirely clear, there is currently no operator anywhere in the world testing Jelly Bean for the GT-i9250T.

    Hey there guys,
It might be an idea to NOT advertise that the Xperia S was shipping with ICS. I bought mine in late June and it had that notice right there on the box, now its September and the claim still isn’t true. I’m not so eager to call ‘false advertising’, but come on. I realise this delay isn’t entirely the fault of Vodafone, but you can’t just say a phone has something it plainly doesn’t.

So what is happening with the Huawei G300. A couple of months ago the weekly wrap had ICS coming, now its a maintainance release for the current os. Given the voda website said ICS is coming, can I assume this maintainance release is a stepping stone? (Also note that the voda website is wrong — there is no wifi direct on this phone that I can find, despite the description saying so).

    The website says
The Ascend G300 comes with many features you’d expect from a flagship handset at a fraction of the cost. Audio and video can be shared instantly on your DLNA-enabled devices and WiFi Direct allows for quick and simple WiFi connectivity. All the usuals you’ve come to expect from Android are there, with a future upgrade to Android 4.0 confirmed.

Can anyone from Vodafone explain to me why the iCS update has been rolled out in Australia since JUNE and Optus users have already been able to upgrade for ages and yet Vodafone users still have to wait. it’s such a shame because the Sony Xperia S can be the phone that can salvage Vodafone’s failing image. It picks up signals so well even when the SGS2 and HTC Sensation XL have zero bars and keep dropping calls.

Hi xtacee1990, the reason for the delay is outlined in the post above. Our testing has been completed, and we have provided our testing report to Sony. At this stage we are currently awaiting their response to a number of outstanding queries.

Until a response is received, we cannot grant approval to the update. Due to commercial agreements in place between Vodafone and our suppliers I cannot provide any more specific detail on what the hold up is.

At this stage the update is not approved for release on our network. Once we receive a response from Sony to our queries we will review whether or not we can approve this update and share the news in the Weekly Wrap.
