Software Update Weekly Wrap – 6th December 2012

Welcome to this week’s Weekly Wrap! This post will give you all the information we currently have on software updates working their way through our labs.

If you’re interested in learning how Android updates make their way from Google to your smartphone, why not have a read of the Android Software Journey?

When will Jelly Bean be available for my phone?

We’re excited at the release of the latest version of Android and would be delighted to see this update roll out to our customers.

In addition to the upgrades for the Nexus S and Samsung GALAXY S III, at this stage the only other confirmations we have received from local vendors regarding Jelly Bean are for the GALAXY Nexus, GALAXY S II, GALAXY Note, GALAXY Tab 2 10.1 and the HTC One X.

We do not have any further information regarding local availability or eligibility of upgrades to any other existing devices.

As more confirmations are received from local manufacturers, they will be added to the Weekly Wraps so be sure to check back each Thursday for the latest news.

What you need to know about our Weekly Wraps

We rely on our manufacturing partners to develop software updates prior to submission to us for testing and certification.

This Weekly Wrap contains any and all information on software updates that manufacturers are working on submitting to us for testing, or are already in our labs.

Although you may hear news about updates from around the web and overseas, please be aware that local delivery timelines can differ. This is due to local hardware variants and Australian regulatory requirements.

If the update you’re looking for isn’t included below, it means the manufacturer has not made any indication to us regarding their local plans for Australian release.

What’s in the labs?

Wow, I’m disappointed that the one x has gone into a third round of testing. I mean its been quite a while since the announcement for jellybean on the one x was done. Should we be expecting this update around Christmas? And Kieran, when did HTC say they wanted to do a third round of testing? Could you give me that date or is it confidential?

Hi allan, it was within the last few days. If the updated build is released to us for testing within a week we should have it ready for Christmas.

Hi Jemon, I think that’s a bit of an unfair assessment especially given the circumstances.

HTC who built your One X, who developed the software for your One X, and who code any updates for your One X have requested additional rounds of testing. We were ready to grant approval to the update after the first round.

There’s no mimicking of the GALAXY S III testing schedule and definitely no concealment taking place. Surely providing transparent, weekly updates on the status of the software for your phone is the direct opposite of concealing things?

Before everyone starts complaining that the Galaxy Nexus should be getting the 4.2 update instead of the 4.1 one, the 4.2 update is very buggy and I’d advise everyone to wait until Google irons out all the kinks…

      Hi Dean,

Thats the advantage of waiting few months once the update has been delivered by google… Google has already release 4.2.1 and fixed most of the issue if not all…

        I agree with Tyn.

And Dean, Mate, Even if Google irons out the issues with 4.2.1, Samsung and Vodafone Australia will still take 5 – 6 months to provide it to you from that point (if you’re lucky). BY then the GN will be 2 years old and not worth upgrading to 4.2.whatever.

I’d suggest you flash your GN with the stock Rom available from Google, and all will be well.

I am on 4.2. The 4.2.1 update pretty much only fixed the “missing December” issue.
As for all the problems. My battery doesn’t last as long. Phone isn’t as fast any more. Phone reboots randomly all the time. Camera app has actually removed features (photo sphere is amazing though) and doesn’t perform as well.

I’d much prefer being on 4.1 right now. :P

Hi keiran, was just wondering how long Final OTA testing generally takes.

Also, any word on JB for Xperia S? Looking forward to that and iI have to wait on official updates, as despite Sony’s promise of supporting the rooting of an Xperia S, mine is locked (followed the instructions) :-(

    • Kieran McIlwain says:

Hi Alastair, when we test updates we always do a full reflash of the handset to each build we test. Final OTA testing is the last step in the process, where we roll back a device to the production software (that’s the version you’re using) and ask the supplier to then push the new build over the air.

Once it’s done there’s a quick “sanity check” to ensure that everything works as it should after the OTA upgrade. So, the physical testing process only takes a day or two but actually getting the OTA servers set up to push to a handful of devices can take a few days at the supplier’s end.

In short, though, it a bit like asking how long is a piece of string? As with anything to do with testing there are lots of moving parts and it’s hard to give a definitive answer. I hope that in place of that, the additional insight will suffice.

As for Jelly Bean? No word from Sony I’m sorry! As soon as there’s anything confirmed though I’ll let you know.

Hi sergiio, you’re absolutely right! We have no idea about creating Android updates and we don’t even begin to try. The simple truth is that all of our software updates (Android, Windows Phone, Symbian, iOS) are created by the manufacturer of the phone. We’ve never coded a software update before and we don’t plant to start soon.

Scam? No. Delay? Yes. Slightly frustrating? Almost certainly. But, I’m confident HTC do know what they’re doing when it comes to creating Android updates so if they tell us the update’s not ready yet I’m going to take their word on it.

Hi Kieran. I’ve got a question about all you said.

The updates are done by HTC, but apps like Joyn, included in the last update, are done by the carrier (in this case Vodafone). Is this the problem why Vodafone delays? I think that it is the really problem.

Excuse me for speaking in this tone, it’s not your fault.

Hi sergiio, I’ve just had a quick check of your IP and I can see you’ve reached us from Spain. Hello!

The carrier customisation here in Australia is different from the one over there (as an example we don’t include Joyn on our phones). However, the process is still the same – any additional apps are included by the manufacturer at the request of the carrier. Vodafone still don’t physically add anything ourselves.

Hi Chris, we currently operate a DC-HSPA+ network on 850MHz, 2100Mhz and 900MHz. Our LTE network will operate on the 1800MHz frequency. As the Lumia 920 supports these frequencies and technologies, there should be no problem. You will need to change your settings, but in principal the support is there.

Hi Iain, when the devices were upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich they were given a more cut-down and less memory-intensive version of Sense at version 3.6 rather than v4.0 on the newer devices such as the One X. It is therefore unlikely that they will be able to be upgraded to the newer HTC Sense 4+ included with Jelly bean updates.

Unfortunately the page on HTC’s website appears to be offline right now, but I’d suggest bookmarking it and coming back at a later stage.

I have been speculating since u people posted HTC submitting 4.1 update for one x. I noticed that after the completion of first round u took one whole week to review the test results n from the last week again u guys took a whole week to say that need another round of testing . How silly, blaming HTC for the cause

Hi surya, you’re right that the changes in status line up on a weekly schedule but there’s a simple explanation. I post updates each week, which let you know any status changes that took place in the last 7 days. The changes in status might take place after a day or two, but they are accurate at the time of posting.

Also, I’m certainly not blaming HTC for the delays – simply letting everybody know that they made a specific decision not to release the earlier builds. As I mentioned in an earlier reply, I’m confident HTC know what they’re doing when it comes to creating Android updates. So if they tell us the update’s not ready yet I’m going to take their word on it.

Yeah but isn’t it that the official roll out of the update will depend on the carriers? I’ve read that in an article. How the hell did India Europe Asia etc received the update already? I mean what’s the difference between the one x that a guy in india owns and the one x that a Vodafone customer owns? And what happen after 3rd round? Fourth round? Fifth round? Is this up to 12 rounds? Explain please, let’s see how good of a customer server you are

    • Kieran McIlwain says:

Hi Jemon, you can read more about the process a software update undergoes as it makes its way to your phone in the Android Software Journey. It’s a great read that helps explain some of the more technical points in more detail.

We do test and approve updates before they’re rolled out to our customers, but the physical roll is done by the manufacturer (in this case HTC). If HTC tell us that the update we’ve approved isn’t going to be rolled out there’s little that Vodafone can do to change that. In each case we’ve been satisfied with the update initially submitted to us, however HTC advised that they had an additional update for us to test.

As they’re the experts when it comes to the software they’ve developed for their products, I’m going to trust their judgement and recognise that there’s a good reason why they’re taking the time to build a new software update for us.

So what’s the difference between your One X and a One X used in India? For a start the software is customised for Australian laws, regulations and specifically for Vodafone’s network. Each country’s regulations around how telecommunications devices need to operate are subtly but significantly different and the different builds of software need to account for that.

A lot of this is covered off in more detail in the Android Software Journey, so have a read over it and let me know if you have any further questions. I’d be more than happy to answer them!

So basically what you’re saying is that if the software for the One X doesn’t get in by this week we basically have to wait until next year? I mean we’ve waited a while for the actual software since its announcement and we’ve waited since October (although I sympathise for the GNex users on Vodafone)but to have to wait till next year? I mean doesn’t that seem a bit unreasonable? The One X WAS a flagship phone (was flagship until the announcement of the One X+) and as a result I’d expect a pretty quick update from HTC.

And I also wanted to ask about the actual review and testing process. In testing, do they only give you one OS to test or do they give you a few and let you guys test each one individually to see which one works best? If it was ready to roll out (according to Vodafone) then what may have been the problem with rolling that version out (besides HTC saying that they didn’t want to roll that version out, not doubting HTC’s technical expertise at all)? And do you have it tested on multiple devices as well? I.e., Kieran may test it and then other employees with the same device test it at the same time. And when reviewing the software, why does it take so long? Is it going through the physical numbers from results or is it just general discussion in a meeting room?

Hi Allan, the delivery schedule is entirely up to HTC. As clichéd as it may sound, Christmas IS coming and soon and I think everybody deserves a bit of a break over the holiday period. If they can deliver it soon then we might get it in before the break (and that’s what I’m hoping) but if HTC don’t deliver the update then there’s nothing for us to test, and that means there’s nothing for HTC to roll out.

More specific information about the testing process can be found in Part 3 of the Android Software Journey. We’re only given a single build to test, but there may be multiple revisions (as there has been with the One X Update). These additional revisions may be at our request (we found something that didn’t work) or at the vendor’s request (they’ve made improvements and need us to test the new build).

The device testing isn’t done by simply loading it up and “seeing how it feels”. It’s actually a scientific process performed by our testing engineers in a dedicated testing lab. They’ve got thousands of individual test cases to check against, and it’s a laborious and intensive process. The review that takes place is both a review of physical data and also discussion of the results in a round-table setting.

Hope this gives you some more insight, if there’s any other questions you have I’d be happy to answer them.

Is there actually an aspect of testing which revolves around how the actual software feels? And yes, I do believe that everyone deserves a break over the holidays, I understand that from working three jobs. I also wanted to know what the One X update would come with (if possible). For example, is it bringing better battery life? Is it going to change a lot of the functionality of the phone and will it keep overheating like my phone does all the time? XD

Hi Rahul, not yet – once I hear anything it will be added to the Weekly Wraps ASAP. So, if the update you’re looking for isn’t included it means that we don’t have any information available.

I doubt it, unless you’re rooted. If you are just flash an ICS rom onto the phone.

I’m not rooted. ever since I flashed jelly bean my phones become at least 3 times slower (no exaggerating). my keyboard takes about 6 seconds to show up and it keeps disappearing for no reason. when someone calls their number shows up then after 3 seconds changes to the saved name. when scrolling it is no where near smooth, keeps lagging and freezing. every app takes 3 times longer to launch. battery life less than halved, it drains before my eyes. ever since I flashed to jelly bean I have had to remove the back cover 4 times because it freezed and I couldn’t even restart the phone. overall, I’m definately not happy with Samsung. my previous phone, HTC Desire HD was alooot smoother and faster. I had the desire HD for two years and it never freezed or lagged. right now even the iPhone which I think of it as garbage, would be a better phone than this S3 in my opinion.
I’ve posted this question 2 times and Kieran has successfully ignored me both times while replying to everyone else’s posts. thanks Kieran :)

Hi Erfan, I would recommend backing up your data with Samsung Kies and performing a factory reset.

Kieran, about performing factory reset, I know a lot about phones, meaning that’s already been done, did not make a difference.
And I also already know that a roll back is not possible OTA or through kies. I was asking if there is a way for me to do it manually without messing with the warranty…

Hi Erfan, I’d recommend heading to your local Vodafone store for further assistance. They can forward your device to our Service Centre to have it assessed for warranty repair.

Does Samsung Kies support vanilla android devices, like the Galaxy Nexus?

Hi Erfan, firmware rollback is not supported via FOTA or Kies.

Are there any chance of jelly bean coming to HTC Sensation XE? If there aren’t any chances, I am afraid to say to HTC is only , good bye, for not releasing jelly bean to older devices like sensation xe.

So a Galaxy Nexus — the ‘developer phone’ that receives the latest software — owner can expect their phone to be updated to an already outdated push in a turbidly described timeframe.

Thanks for the super elucidating post, Vodafone PR.

    @Erfan

So are you saying that you updated your phone OTA (through Samsung)? Or that you manually flashed the update on your phone yourself?

    G’day Keiran,

Thanks for your advice on an older thread. Even though I have asked you a question there, I thought it will be best to post it here on a current thread.

Thanks for your pointers to my previous questions. Given that creating a thread is the only way, I will ask it here itself.
If I bring my phone to Vodafone, will it be possible to restore the stock ICS ROM.
I downloaded the OTA but it wouldn’t apply. So I started following some threads on manually installing it. But now I have no ROM on my phone.

    Your advice is greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    A

Hi A., you’ll need to have the operating system reloaded onto your phone by a service centre. Based on your wording, it sounds like you didn’t purchase the phone from us so unfortunately our service centre won’t be able to assist. The best course of action here is to contact the manufacturer of your handset or the place of purchase to discuss your servicing options.

        G’day Kieran,

That’s the funny thing. I purchased this phone from Vodafone last year on a 2-year contract. :-)
The phone was also sim-unlocked by Vodafone before I went overseas. Really appreciated that.

Given this extra information, what are my options? Like you had suggested earlier, I have submitted an online request for repair. What should I do next? Will there be a cost to recover my phone?

Your help and advice are deeply appreciated.

        Thanks mate.

        Cheers,
        A.

Hi A., thanks for the extra info. If you’ve already submitted the online servicing request, the next step is to head to your nearest store and send it away for service. If there’s any cost involved they’ll let you know before carrying out the work.
