Software Update Weekly Wrap – 7th March, 2012

Welcome to this week’s Weekly Wrap! This post will give you all the information we currently have on software updates working their way through our labs.

Last week I published a three-part series on the Android Software Journey. If you’ve ever wondered how an update makes its way from Google to your smartphone or tablet, we hope this series will help to shed some light on the process. Check out the first instalment here.

What will this post tell me?

The information in this Weekly Wrap only details information on software updates that manufacturers have physically provided to Vodafone for testing and certification. Although you may hear news about updates from around the web and overseas, please be aware that local delivery timelines can differ. This is due to local hardware variants and Australian regulatory requirements.

What will this post not tell me?

Information on proposed or planned updates is not included. We rely on our manufacturing partners to develop software updates prior to submission to us for testing and certification. Due to the fluid nature of this development process and the high likelihood of delivery schedules shifting, we will only provide news on an update once we are in possession of it.

Questions, comments or need help?

If you have any questions regarding these updates, check out the links below to start a discussion or join an existing conversation at our Vodafone Community:

    Kieran,

Why has the 10.1v update been in testing for 11 weeks? How many weeks do you think this will continue? I feel it has reached an embarrassing point for Vodafone.

Hi John, the update remains in testing as it is not yet in a state that is fit for approval or release to customers. When that changes we’ll share the news here, but at the moment the current and most up to date news is that the it is currently in testing.

Thanks for that Kieran. The 10.1v update has had the longest vodafone testing and development of any android update ever which makes me pretty dissapointed to be an owner of the device. I think I’ll steer clear of Samsung devices in the future – in the past I have been happy with their products but I am now questioning their understanding of the android os. The first two builds for the 10.1v have been incredibly buggy. They then commited to 3.1 for the device, then changed their minds (too hard for them maybe?) and it has taken them months to develop 3.2 to a state that cannot pass vodafone testing, which judging by how buggy 3.0 and 3.0.1 for the device were/are is fairly easy to get a build through.

Kieran. Please tell Samsung to forget about 3.2 for the 10.1v it has been in testing for 11 weeks already, who knows how long it was worked on before that final stage. Whatever is wrong with it is obviously too difficult to fix. Please tell them that 3.2 is now a dinosaur, can they please drop it and look into 4.0 for the 10.1v and bring the device into the modern era.

Kieran, the time has come for Vodafone to do the right thing here.

We purchased a device in good faith, which for many people turned out to be a plastic paper weight. That some 10 months down the track Vodafone still hasn’t got the ability to provide a fix (what other conclusion can we draw from 11 weeks of testing?) it suggests that action needs to be taken. Your customers should not be the ones wearing the loss here.

Please speak to your superiors, and organise for all 10.1v owners to return their devices at no further cost or contractual obligation.

Why is that Vodafone is hated by everyone, customers an manufacture alike?

Hi Tom Jones, delivery of builds can vary due to the local requirements of each carrier. We’re working closely with HTC on delivering Android 4.0 to a range of handsets, but at this stage they have not yet delivered an update for the Sensation.

I’ve provided a detailed look at this process in our blog series titled “The Android Software Journey” which you can find here: http://blog.vodafone.com.au/blog/the-android-software-journey-part-1/

Hi Jonathan, we’re aware of some customers facing intermittent issues with some aspects of the 10.1v, and others who are not. We take on board all feedback and have passed this along to Samsung and additionally have considered any reported faults during our testing process.

As with any computing device, the individual experience can vary through the addition of apps, personalisation and preferences which build a software platform unique to that user. There may also be a hardware fault with a device that could present as an issue months after you’ve received it. Our network of Service Centres are the best teams to investigate potential hardware faults in this case. More information on our Service Centres can be found here: http://vodafone.com.au/theservicecentre

That proves how poor the Vodafone testing process is Kieran. My 10.1v dropped it’s 3g connection using the stock browser straight out of the box on a regular basis. It was a very common issue reported on the net. It was supposed to be one of the “fixes” in the 3.0.1 maintenance release – obviously not isolated to “some customers”. It was everyone with this device. From this I can conclude that Vodafone testing did not even check that the browser would run correctly for a 10 minute period.

Also, after weeks of emails and remote tests carried out by vodafone my 10.1v has been at a service center for nearly 3 weeks now. I have no idea of when I’ll get it back, if it has been fixed, nothing. Vodafone don’t provide loan tablets so I’m stuck without my tablet for who knows how long. I was told it could take up to 6 weeks – that’s one and a half billing periods.

Hi John, if your device has had an outstanding hardware fault the issue may present across all builds of software and through multiple updates. I’m sorry to hear that you’ve been without your device for nearly 3 weeks and no news on the status. Our turnaround is usually much quicker than that, so my assumption would be that additional parts had to be sourced in order to complete your repair.

The good news is you can track the progress of your repair using the repair reference number (RMS******) and your phone number. Just enter your details into the form here to find out the status: http://www.vodafone.com.au/personal/service-and-repair/the-service-centre/service-and-repair-enquiry/index.htm

Thanks Kieran, I was never given a repair reference number – the store said they would email/txt (i can’t recall which) it to me but I never received it. I made a call today and was told the motherboard had to be replaced and I can pick it up today. I am eager to see if the issue has been fixed and now even more keen to get 3.2 (4.0 really) on my device.

Are you able to confirm and guarantee that we’ll get the update on our 10.1v’s before the end of this year?

With the unbranded version of the GALAXY S II set to be rolled out this month (allegedly) do you think the vodafone version will have a chance to meet that?

Hi Gary, it’s very difficult to provide concrete timelines for software updates due to the vast number of stakeholders in the process. It’s also a bit tough to provide comparison against a date that is at this stage only a rumour! What I can commit to is sharing the news here as soon as I have it. With regards to the 3 variant of the GALAXY S II, it will have a different build of software and we don’t yet have it. As soon as we receive it from Samsung I’ll share the news here in the Weekly Wrap.

Thanks for the info, i guessed the Vodafone and 3 versions might not be one and the same but its a shame you don’t have it yet. I’m guessing that those of us on 3 will just have to cross our fingers and hope it arrives and passes testing ASAP but i suppose sometime in April is the best we can hope for it reaching phones.
As a slight aside, seeing that now all 3 phone customers are being merged to Vodafone as the contracts expire what would happen if i wanted/or get forced (ie switching off the 3 network) to bring my current phone over. Would i be able to change the software or would i have to use the current software and manually input the network data?

Still no update in regards to the Nokia N9 PR 1.2. It is available on the Navifirm for Vodafone to take and get there apps and other junk on it. 70% of the world has already received the update and once again Vodafone is the LAST!
Man this is ridiculous, come on guys…. :(
It’s very clear that Nokia has even updated there software support page for the N9 so it’s very clear that the update is in fact available, and since Vodafone has already worked on the previous update it shouldn’t be that hard to implement their apps on the new one.
You guys at Vodafone need to excel with the update development as it’s extremely slow.

Hi itsmoe, great to hear from you again. Regarding update development, Vodafone do not actively develop or create software updates. While it’s true that we make customisation requests of manufacturers, with regards to the N9, no apps form part of this request. We only ask for our network settings and a link to Vodafone Central be included.

The manufacturer (in this case Nokia) actually writes the code and the software update, and we can only test an update once this has been done. As soon as we have the update in-hand, we’ll let you know in the Weekly Wraps but ultimately we can’t test something we don’t have.

Ah I see, that does make a lot of sense, regardless the phone with the current update (PR 1.1) is working fine, it’s just the video calling in the PR 1.2 that is missing and is what we need.

I have checked Telstra’s update page and they haven’t even finalized the PR 1.1 update, so i’m guessing we are lucky that you guys have finalized it before them.

None the less, we hope we do hear something in regards to the update sometime soon.

I asked this on the software update forum and apparently the moderators didn’t like it for some reason.

I’ll ask the same question here and will assume its not going to be put up for a response but hey who knows maybe you have found the answers to my exceptionally tough questions over the past 24 hours?

Why was the Nexus S given the ICS update in December and before I was able to update to it, it was pulled from my device. I realise there were some bugs, but why wasn’t the testing started on it either before it was initially released or immediately after the release so as to fix the bugs. I

Its coming up 3 months now since the initial release and supposedly the Nexus S was supposed to get priority updates over none google devices but it would seem that it is not the case.

Any ETA’s on the release of ICS on the Nexus S??

Or are we never going to get the update??

Hi trippa, thanks for your comment. The Nexus S update notification was pushed globally, in error, to some handsets during December. The December update was intended only for T-Mobile customers in the USA and was not optimised, tested or approved for customers outside of America. This issue was then corrected by Google and the update made unavailable.

Some customers were able to install the update prior to this change. Other customers received the notification, but attempted to install it after it had been removed. This results in the experience you had where you were notified of an update that you could not install.

The Android 4.0 update for the Nexus S has been supplied to Vodafone and is currently undergoing testing. Due to the nature of this process we cannot provide any ETAs, but as soon as there is news to share I will make it known here here in the Weekly Wrap.

I am a new Vodafone (and Nokia and Windows Phone) customer and the two primary reasons I chose you are:
        1- Your new 850 network
2- Historically you haven’t held back updates and you’ve been first out the gate

    Hi Kieran,

I contacted Vodafone support to report the battery drain issues I am having with my phone and to request that they release the 2.3.6 firmware update for the Samsung Galaxy S. This is the response I got:

“I have spoken with our Technical Support Team regarding the upgrade to the 2.3.6 software for Android devices. The agent I spoke with has advised the upgrade is currently available and can be found under the phone settings – software update.”

I replied that I could not find this update in the software update menu on my phone and that maybe the person who stated this thought he/she was being asked about the Samsung Galaxy S II. I got this response:

“The information provided to me was for the Samsung Galaxy S, i9000. If the update does not appear on the software updates on your handset, I would suggest calling Samsung at the number provided below.”

This blog post hasn’t mentioned the availability of the 2.3.6 update so is there any point calling the support number or is this just a mistake?

    Dear Kieran,
Although it may be inappropriate or perhaps illegal to disclose any sensitive information between Vodafone and Samsung for commercial purposes, it is also illegal to mislead consumers by deceptive conduct. I have been doing some research and find that Vodafone has signed me up to a 2 year contract without providing full service details specifically regarding area coverage, also their claim that MY Galaxy Nexus will be the first to receive up-to-date updates all fall under the Trade Practices Act 1974 which was renamed the Competition and Consumer Act 2010. WE as consumers have rights towards the update process and every little detail of it unless proven otherwise.

The service is terrible. The coverage is terrible. The update timeframe is terrible.

Kieran, just put yourself in our shoes and think about what you would do. Besides, i somewhat assume you’re not with vodafone.

        Dear Kieran,
My main concern has nothing to do with my contract details. I just want to know why the update is not available or why Samsung would provide the updates for Telstra and Optus before Vodafone. And as you state, there are no time frames or specific dates to when the updates will be available so nothing is guaranteed. Why would Vodafone proclaim that by signing me up to a 2 contract I would be a satisfied customer and that I would be provided with up-to date firmware updates before anyone else?

Google is already discussing about releasing Android 5 (jelly bean) sometime in the second quarter. I assume by the time you receive the update, then test it (approx 12 weeks, if not more) Android 5 would already be out.

        Thank you for the reply.

Hi. Could you please respond to the several questions about the Galaxy Nexus 4.02 upgrade (or 4.03) ?

I’m on my 2nd Nexus phone now and this one suffering from continual crashing issues which could be resolved by the new version upgrade. This isn’t my own technical appraisal btw but a consistent message on other global forums when users suffer from the same issue. I don’t want to have to return this phone again and have the same issues on another new Nexus using 4.01..

    Thanks.

My Galaxy Nexus is also facing issues. I have also read around on forums and what your saying is true. I was advised to return it and get a new one but I find that very inconvenient because the update is believed to resolve these issues.

For some unknown reason my gallery keeps force closing. I think it has something to do with the Google+ picture syncing. Regardless of what it may its very frustrating. My battery usage is very inconsistent, sometimes lasts a day and sometimes barely 6 hours (provided I use it for the same reasons on daily basis). Home screen and app drawer are very skippy, I’m on my 3 reset. Switching between home screen quickly while running several applications in the background freezes the phone completely requiring a battery pull.

I’m not sure what your issues are, but I would like to know if this is only occurring to everyone or should I consider getting it replaced?

Hi Joe, the Android 4.0 update for GALAXY S II has only been in testing since the 29th of February. As soon as the testing is complete I’ll update the Weekly Wrap to share the news.

Can I just cancel my contract for the 10.1v with VF. It is hopeless and constantly rebooting itself for no reason.
It can’t do what is promised. I still have like 15 months, and I just can’t live with this useless machine anymore.

well said, VF should have all the 10.1v replaced with a tablet which will get sufficient support.

      We can only dream Keith.

I was one of the “lucky” ones, who only took the 12 mth contract. It expires on the 2nd May, and I’ll be porting out that day.

Hey mate, as far as I know, if you are not able to use the service you are paying for and it’s got nothing to do with you, then that itself will void the contract and you should be able to cancel with not cancellation fees.

Call the customer support team and speak to a supervisor and see what he or she has to say.

I am getting incredibly poor performance form the battery on my Galaxy S2 over the past two weeks. Before, I would bet 48hrs from the battery, and not I am struggling to get 7 hours. My wife is getting the same problem on her LG. Any idea what is causing this?, have something been changed? We have not installed any new apps in that time frame.
I am also having huge problems connecting for data, and often unable to get data connections, even when I can get a voice signal.

Hi BG, I’m afraid that Samsung haven’t mentioned any immediate plans to deliver that update to us for testing. However, once they do I’ll update the post to reflect this.
