Software Update Weekly Wrap – 8th August, 2012

Update 9th August 2012:

New information has now been added for the Samsung GALAXY W, Nexus S and Huawei Ascend Y100 handsets. We appreciate your patience while this additional information was gathered.

Important note

There has been a delay to the supply of some information. Further updates will be added to this table tomorrow (Thursday 9th August 2012).

Welcome to this week’s Weekly Wrap! This post will give you all the information we currently have on software updates working their way through our labs.

What will this post tell me?

The information in this Weekly Wrap only details information on software updates that manufacturers have advised are currently under preparation for submission, or have physically provided to Vodafone for testing and certification. Although you may hear news about updates from around the web and overseas, please be aware that local delivery timelines can differ. This is due to local hardware variants and Australian regulatory requirements.

What will this post not tell me?

We rely on our manufacturing partners to develop software updates prior to submission to us for testing and certification. We will only provide news on an update once the manufacturer has confirmed its forthcoming availability to Vodafone. However, due to the fluid nature of this development process, delivery schedules may shift and a previously communicated update may not enter testing.

What’s in the labs?

The table below lists all updates that are currently undergoing the various stages of testing.

I am trying to be calm but it is still ridiculous that we have to wait 2 month for the Xperia S update. I know you will say that this update is quite special because it is refined for vodafone 850 3g network blablabla, but this is not an excuse. You can’t always ask customers to stay tuned without giving any reasonable answer. Consequently, numerous rumors and complains are set to appear in the comment area every week. Personally, I strongly suspect that this ICS update has encountered with certain major software defects, for example wifi signal lost issue etc. and vodafone reckons that such information is unsuitable to be released to the public. So ‘ Second round software currently in testing’ hasn’t changed for at least one month. After all, that’s all my understandings, if the real world is not what I think, plz tell me. We customers sometimes just need an reasonable explanation. BTW, I feel bloody disappointed this time.

i really cant understand why it takes so long for vodafone to release this update, where the other network carriers overseas already release their ones more than a month now! if u tell me u r not going to bundle all those “exclusive vodafone app” with this update then i would say it is sony’s problem, would you dare to tell us the update is not being affected by those apps??????

Hi Erica, at this stage the update is not in a condition that is suitable for release. Unfortunately commercial agreements between ourselves and Sony mean I can’t go into the full details, but although I can see you (and others) are eager to get ICS on your phones, it does not currently meet our standards of a positive customer experience.

I can 100% confirm that the delay is not caused by our bundled apps. In fact, the “exclusive Vodafone apps” are only two – My Vodafone (our self-care app) and Vodafone Updates (an apps repository where you can obtain the rest of our library). These apps were already tested and approved for Android 4.0.4 many months ago and behave just like any other Play Store app. They do not impact the testing or release of an individual update.

I’m on ICS using an Nexus S and I don’t get the emergency network when outside of vodafone’s range (I recently spent a week in the outback, so should have seen a lot of emergency only because there was the Telstra network) so I don’t think this is an issue for me. ;-]

Vodafone keep talking about improving customer service but seriously when other telcos can provide ICS for the same product you gotta wonder about the level of competency and openess in communication. Sounds more and more like lip service than real service.

HTC cancelled the DHD update a few weeks back staring that they felt Gingerbread provided the optimal experience on the handset and ICS testing didn’t go as smoothly as they planned basically. This is due to hardware limitations (mostly the way HTC partitioned the memory in the handset). They had a similar issue updating the HTC Desire from FroYo to Gingerbread yet after a while they found a way around it for “experienced users”

But the reason for this post is to congratulate Kieran and other who take abuse from us tech heads on a weekly basis. These guys can’t carry the entire organisation. Theres a lot that happens in the background and is underperfomring in my eyes but is no way influenced by these guys. Would you rather they release it untested and then find out later about a software glitch the hard way?
What if the testing was rushed and they missed the fact that you can’t dial 000 when the lock screen is active?

Hi hsimah, as outlined in the post we have already approved the update however there we’re investigating with HTC (the handset vendor) and Microsoft (the platform vendor) as to why the update isn’t yet available for download. Unfortunately we do not code or release updates ourselves so have minimal control in the process once approved.

I just find it strange that all other telcos, not only in Australia, seem to have rolled this update out to their handsets. Yet, as usual, your customers have to wait. Something tells me it isn’t the third parties who are to blame. Windows Phone updates are not the same as Android ones. I guess I’ll just have to sit and wait for my update. And then sit and wait until my contract expires in December and find a better mobile operator.

Hi Richard, just so I’m clear – awareness of an update’s existence and being able to give you a timeline for local release are two separate things. Although I’m aware of this particular update, and though I have regular meetings with HTC, they have not made any indication of their plans for a local release.

Overseas delivery time frames have very little bearing on local delivery due to local requirements. As I said earlier, once HTC let us know they’re ready to submit the update to us for testing I’ll share the news in the Weekly Wrap.

I feel like these blogs have lost competitive advantage now Optus and Telstra are doing the same quite mainstream.

People keep bugging you Kieran and sometimes you filter some more information in the comments which just leads to more bugging

Do you reckon you guys could expand the boxes a little bit each week and sort of make the info in the tables as final so you guys won’t get swamped with ETA and device queries

“HTC has not indicated a local release of 4.0.4″
Just like you guys did for the Nexus S Jellybean, instead of just saying it was delayed, delayed due to emergency call requirements

That kind of information feels less generic and gives us better insight to the process

Hi Jez, thanks for taking the time to leave feedback. We’re constantly reviewing the way we communicate this information to customers. We’ve always been ahead of the curve when it comes to transparency around Android and other smartphone updates so trust me when I say there’s much more to come.

Regarding your specific comments around Android 4.0.4 for the HTC One X, the news of the release only broke across the weekend. As there hasn’t been a Weekly Wrap since this news, it’s a bit tough to say what the status is. Each week’s post is only updated in exceptional circumstances, and even then it’s only ever a notice placed at the top.

Keep an eye out for Wednesday’s Wrap for news on the HTC One X and some bigger and better improvements still yet to come.

    Hi Kieran,
There may be some information about this on one of the other blogs but I don’t have time to go through everything right now and I have tried a search which didn’t bring up anything. Do you know anything about this battery drain problem with the Samsung Galaxy S III? I’ve had one for about 3 weeks and while the battery life was never great (compared to the Iphone I had previously) it just seems to be getting worse and worse. I’ve got about 7 hours out of it today with hardly any use at all (again compared to how heavily I used my Iphone which used to last all day – I know they are completely different phones but as a consumer this is how I compare how well a product suits me). It is draining even when I am not using it. I have changed from live wallpaper to a normal wall paper, I have turned off vibrate and bluetooth and I have used task manager to close all applications that might have been running and it is still draining super fast. I have read articles on the internet that say there is a problem and that Samsung will release a fix soon. Do you have an information or advice on this?
    Cheers,

Hi Beck, sounds like you haven’t had a great experience so far and I certainly sympathise with the feeling of never having enough time in the day. As outlined in the table above there is a maintenance release for the GALAXY S III currently in testing. Unfortunately we’re not able to supply ETAs on software update releases.

Although this may fix the issue for you, I don’t recommend treating a software update as a silver bullet. A hardware fault cannot be resolved by a software fix. If your device is not performing as expected so early in its life, I’d recommend returning it to your place of purchase or nearest Vodafone store for assessment and potential repair or replacement.

Also if you use the facebook app. Theres a bug with that too, in which your phone will never go to deep sleep, facebook will always be running consuming battery. Check the Google Play Store feedback about the facebook app

Anyway I hope that the maintenance release does indeed fix this issue.
And I hope its not too far away, cause samsung has announced Jellybean for the SGSIII nect month

Hi Ben, that’s a great tip regarding Facebook as errant apps can sometimes be the cause of battery life problems. I have to disagree on the Cell Standby issue, however. The research I’ve done shows that the issue (and fix) simply address a reporting bug rather than an actual power drain issue. That is, although the phone is reporting 30% drain it’s not actually using that much power.

As for Jelly Bean, I’m afraid I need to disagree once more. Samsung have not confirmed any plans regarding Jelly Bean for their existing range of devices and I’m afraid that anything you’ve heard otherwise is simply hearsay and rumour. Sorry!

Hi duncan, I can see that you’re reaching us from the UK. Just to confirm, did you purchase your device from Vodafone in Australia or in the UK? If your device was purchased from Vodafone UK their eForum may be a better place to get assistance.

If you purchased your One X from us here in Australia and are travelling, I can confirm that HTC have let us know they’re working on delivering that update to us soon for testing and certification.

Why does it take so long for you to release ICS on Xperia S ??? Please give an exact releasing date so I don’t have to come back here every week and be disappointed.

Hi Alex, the reason that the Xperia S update has not been approved for release is because at this stage it does not meet our requirements. Our requirements are in place to ensure that you receive a better experience upon upgrade, rather than a worse one.

I can’t provide you an exact release date as one doesn’t exist.
