Software Update Weekly Wrap – 10th October, 2012

Welcome to this week’s Weekly Wrap! This post will give you all the information we currently have on software updates working their way through our labs.

If you’re interested in learning how Android updates make their way from Google to your smartphone, why not have a read of the Android Software Journey?

When will Jelly Bean be available for my phone?

We’re excited at the release of the latest version of Android and would be delighted to see this update roll out to our customers.

In addition to the upgrade for the Nexus S, at this stage the only other confirmations we have received from local vendors regarding Jelly Bean are for the GALAXY Nexus and the Samsung GALAXY S III.

We do not have any further information regarding local availability or eligibility of upgrades to any other existing devices.

As more confirmations are received from local manufacturers, they will be added to the Weekly Wraps so be sure to check back each Wednesday for the latest news.

What you need to know about our Weekly Wraps

We rely on our manufacturing partners to develop software updates prior to submission to us for testing and certification.

This Weekly Wrap contains any and all information on software updates that manufacturers are working on submitting to us for testing, or are already in our labs.

Although you may hear news about updates from around the web and overseas, please be aware that local delivery timelines can differ. This is due to local hardware variants and Australian regulatory requirements.

If the update you’re looking for isn’t included below, it means the manufacturer has not made any indication to us regarding their local plans for Australian release.

What’s in the labs?

Oh boy… 4.1.2 is out in market… Kieran you shouldn’t have changed it to bold as there was no progress over last week or for that sake for last 2 months… Its just rephrased… eventually the point is Voda doesn’t have the software and Samsung hasn’t given it to you yet.

Now I am thinking I should get the Nexus 7. So I can have Jellybean and the 4.1.2 build.

here. here. It is early october so they needed to update and change the bold font and status. Now we need to wait till mid October (next week) to see if we get the Jellybean update for Nexus! Fun fun fun…***sarcasm

Thinking of getting a Motorola (directly from Google) next time. Beats waiting for Samsung! Or I will move to America where everything comes out faster. Seeing as S3 has the update in Europe. Or get the other Nexus devices. They have rumored NEXUS devices from HTC, Motorola and LG.

Also a recent news article in smh.com.au referred to Australia as the second largest population to move to a smartphone (after Singapore) and yet we have the least data (America does unlimited) and the worst coverage (America has had LTE for a while and we are only now *getting 4G).

I guess patience is what we are learning here…

I think samsung has a policy of not releasing updates before the next version launch… so want JB? wait untill theres better update available… I think voda should refund our money because we aint getting the latest updates as advertised… I really dont think this delay is due to the T version… ithey are testing consumer patience…

Hi tyn, the 4.1.2 update is specifically for the Nexus 7 and is not relevant for your GALAXY Nexus at this stage. As I’ve mentioned above – I expect to have more news from Samsung shortly. Once it’s received, I will share it here. The article was posted yesterday to meet the regular Wednesday publish.

Hi tyn, I’ve not suggested that we always get updates first. As I’ve said to Johnny it isn’t a cut and dry situation, sometimes we’re first and sometimes we’re not. This is an example of one of the times we weren’t.

Hi tyn, you are correct. The responsibility for delivery of software is with the manufacturer. Vodafone do not develop software updates.

  2. Alex says:

    Hi Kieran,

I’m sure you’re sick and tired of hearing from Galaxy Nexus owners, but I wanted to ask one more question.

Given the amount of pain the lack of Galaxy Nexus updates has caused Vodafone customers and hence Vodafone itself, will Vodafone attempt to avoid manufacturer specific builds of Nexus devices in future? Or, where it is not possible to avoid a manufacturer specific build of a Nexus device, state this clearly to consumers so that they know before they buy the product that updates may (and probably will) be delayed by the manufacturer?

I only bought a Galaxy Nexus from Vodafone a few months ago, and I would not have done so if I knew the delay on updates would be so long (I expected some delay but not this). I will definitely be checking the build of all future Nexus devices before I buy them (and will not buy anything that isn’t a Google build), but I don’t think consumers should have to do such detailed investigation themselves. Consumers buy Nexus devices expecting the latest updates, and I think carriers should inform them if this is not the case.

I am completely aware that the delay in rolling out the Jelly Bean update to the Galaxy Nexus is not Vodafone’s fault, but if Vodafone doesn’t want to lose customers over this I think they need to inform consumers better before they make a purchase or, even better, avoid selling such manufacturer specific devices in future.

Hi Alex, this particular build of the GALAXY Nexus was the only one made available to us for purchase. We also agree that the delay has been excessive which is why we have been in regular (and now daily) communication with Samsung regarding these delays. At this stage I expect to have more news very shortly regarding this update, and once it’s received I’ll be sharing it here.

        Hi Kieran,

In your daily communications can you find out why the S3 has an update to 4.1 (in Korea admittedly) while the Nexus which is supposed to receive the updates 1st is still on 4.0.4 is Australia? This seems to confirm that Samsung has deliberately been focusing on the S3 to drive people off the Nexus.

Will the Warranty on the nexus be voided if we flash the device with stock android from Google? As this seems to be the only way of getting the Google updates in a reasonable time frame.

Hi Alastair, as outlined in the beginning of this post: “Although you may hear news about updates from around the web and overseas, please be aware that local delivery timelines can differ. This is due to local hardware variants and Australian regulatory requirements.”

It is not my place to comment on Samsung’s internal policies, procedures or strategies. You’re welcome to raise your query directly with them via any of the methods outlined on their website.

On using software directly from Google, please be aware that any device that is not running Vodafone-approved software may not be eligible for warranty service directly from us. Again, if you have a query regarding the terms of your manufacturer’s warranty you will need to ask Samsung for clarification. Ultimately, an individual assessment of your device will need to be undertaken by one of our trained technicians before warranty service can be provided.

Shortly? What does that mean? Tomorrow? This week? Next month? Samsung must have given you an ETA date, after the length of this delay, the least you could do is pass that on to us.

I understand that Samsung are putting you in a tough position, but you need to offer more than vagueness.

Samsung gave it to Optus last week and Telstra today- why is Vodafone still not in the loop about when they will receive the update?

The common denominator seems to be Vodafone. as Samsung is dishing out the updates to other providers earlier…

Ie on the Telstra Crowd support update page – they give dates of when they are receiving the software and its met you just keep saying “awaiting submission from samsung” people have been waiting months for vodafone to receive the update…

Hi Johnny, if you’ve been watching the GALAXY Nexus progress closely you will have seen that there have been a number of dates supplied to us that have subsequently been missed. We’re in regular communication with our partners including Samsung and several indicative dates have been supplied already, but until the software is physically in our hands there is no news to share. Once that changes though, I’ll spread the news far and wide.

            Hi Kieran,

My main concern is why Samsung are supplying your competition with the update first, even after you have told the community that you keep asking samsung for the update to be submitted to vodafone. We as the community take this as a slap in the face, it is pretty much saying that we would be better off as a consumer to be with Optus or Telstra.. as we will get updates sooner, also have 4G network e.t.c

          • Kieran McIlwain says:

Hi Johnny, there have been a number of updates that we have received first, a number of updates we have received second, and a number of updates we have received third. As an example, the most recent LH1 update to the GALAXY S III was received, approved and released to customers by us even sooner than the open-market or “vanilla” variants. While we may not be the first for this particular update, it’s not indicative of an overall trend.

To repeat – once we receive the update from Samsung we will test it as a matter of priority and I will communicate that news once there is news to communicate. Until that happens, there’s nothing further to share.

I agree with Johnny and I think this is our right to know why other carriers received JB but Vodafone?
As Johnny said, we would be better off as a consumer to be with Optus or Telstra and we will get better service. Now I know why Vodafone has been named the worst telco for customer satisfaction.

The builds for the Telstra Optus and Vodafone Glaxy Nexus will be the same from Samsung, so i doubt we will see any different in release timings on this one from Samsung.

The “more news from Samsung shortly” is not the normal wording Kieran uses… almost sounds like he has his an inkling of info but waiting for his weekly call with Sammy (later this week)

    Hi Kieran,

As you already know Nexus owners are getting very impatient waiting for the Jellybean update, especially now 4.1.2 has been released.

Can you please define what “shortly” means? You obviously know something and haven’t passed the info onto the end users.

Also can you assure us that any future updates will be dealt with in a more reasonable time frame? Have you spoken with Samsung and asked that they find a more streamlined approach to updates for the GNex?

I have to admit I nearly broke today and almost installed yakju. I don’t want to, I shouldn’t have to stuff around or void my warranty. The main reason I got a GNex was because I wanted fast updates.

My GF’s nexus s has had jelly bean via OTA updates for 2 months. The nexus situation is beyond a joke, you really need to be more firm with Samsung to get these updates out quickly and efficiently.

Hi Mat, definitely aware of everybody’s feelings on the matter and as I mentioned in the comments on last week’s update I have since made Samsung aware of them. To be clear, at this stage the 4.1.2 update only brings changes for the Nexus 7 tablet and is not for the handsets we sold.

Regarding a definition of the word “shortly” it is meant in the truest sense of the word – “in a short time, soon”. The table above reflects the latest information we have available, and as soon as there is something more to share I will update it with that info. I’ve been advised by Samsung to expect news “shortly” and I’ve conveyed this to you and others accordingly.

Regarding future updates, I’m going to repost what I said last week as it conveys our feelings best:
We hear and understand how you feel about the situation and we want to make sure the right people do too. I’ve passed some of your specific messages to Samsung, not a general comment about how you feel, your exact words. We feel it’s important your voice is heard by the right people.

This is independent of how we feel directly. We’re waiting for news on the update as much as you are, and I assure you I’ve seen, sent and traded emails day and night asking the same questions you are.

For now, your voice is heard. I hear you, we understand, and we’ve made sure Samsung hear you too. When there’s any news, a change or information to share you’ll be the first to know. Right after me.

Seriously, what’s to test? It’s out for others and working fine on the s3. What you are saying is basically, we need to load up this with vodafone branding and crappy apps before we release it.

Bloody poor form and why I constantly have to root my phone and install custom roms to keep updated. Utterly usless vodafone. UTTERLY.

Hi Sam, I’d recommend having a read of the Android Software Journey linked at the beginning of the post. It explains the role we play in a software update and how that role is limited to testing alone. We do not code updates or develop Android software ourselves.

Any applications or wallpapers we ship on our devices are embedded into the update by the Manufacturer when a device is initially set up. Often these are not modified during the update process so there is no impact on delivery schedules related to customisation. It’s also important to note that this happens before we even receive the update.

I really recommend having a read of it as it answers many of the questions you’ve asked.

Hi Merwyn, Mat was specifically referring to Android 4.1.2 – which at this stage is only available for the “takju” variant.

yakju only has a 4.1.1 (JRO03C) which every one is waiting for…
          yakju doesnt have a 4.1.2 (JZO54K) build yet…

What matt was implying is we haven’t received 4.1.1 (JRO03C) as yet and there is a newer version soon to be released 4.1.2 (JZO54K)

This is extremely frustrating week after week and month after month, same old news. Seriously! Vodafone never make a T device on a nexus if you can’t do anything about software update. The trade off for the network is definelty not worth it when you lose timely update on a nexus. What is this? Vodafone just says Samsung didn’t give the update and we are suppose to wait for this for months? This is misleading, buying a nexus from you. Just call the google/Samsung nexus to Vodafone specific trying to be nexus next time so I won’t get tricked and deal with this.

Hi Ken, the delays appear to be affecting all Australian hardware variants including the GT-i9250 ranged by another carrier. As mentioned above I expect to have more news from Samsung shortly and will share it as soon as I receive it.

Hi Edward, there’s a section in the introduction to the post titled “When will Jelly Bean be available for my phone?” – and as stated further down in the intro: “If the update you’re looking for isn’t included below, it means the manufacturer has not made any indication to us regarding their local plans for Australian release.”

Sorry! Nothing yet – but once we hear anything you’re in the right place to find it.

    Dear Kieran
As a long suffering Nexus owner I understand everyones frustrations at the extreme delay in getting updates for what is meant to be a flagship device. At the same time I am an IT professional and like yourself have been at the mercy of manufactures with slipping timelines and focus on other areas, such as new products. I understand the frustration you must have in replying to the same questions when all you yourself have is limited information that you can only word in so many different ways :)

Please note that I am sure the majority of us owners that are waiting for the magic to happen appreciate the effort you put in, but like the majority we can only ask you continue to express to Samsung the disappointment in the time it takes to receive updates that will only shortly leave us behind the next public update anyway.

My 2 most previous devices were the HTC Desire and Desire HD, might have to look at their next round of offerings

Keep up the pressure – you are our primary point of contact for this :)

Hi Trent, I knew the easter egg in Jelly Bean was a bad omen – all those Jelly Beans flying around the screen were surely a sign of things to come and today our worst fears are realised.

From my vantage point in North Sydney at least, the skies have begun to clear so this weatherman is declaring fine(ish) skies for the weekend!

Hi ccsvchost, the Belle refresh entered testing within the last week (as indicated in the table above). As it’s a minor refresh we’re only looking to use a single round of testing, so as long as no issues are uncovered it should be approved within the coming days.

I dont see why people are complaining to vodaphone about the samsung updates. vodaphone have no control over it. even on my friends telstra handsets of the nexus and S3 they are both delayed and expected in november now. so if you have a problem then talk to samsung about it rather than pestering vodaphone. im sure vodaphone are sick of all your whining.

Kieran has said it multiple times that when he hears from samsung he will tell us. no use constantly asking him about it. and if you dont want a generic response from samsung then just leave it be. if you have a nexus then your phone was the first to have it and you should be proud. if you have an S3 like me then you have a quad core monster that has no equal in the currant australian market, why are you complaining? if you want the latest android then either root your phone and flash it or go buy a nexus 7. till then stop whining about something you will get for free anyway.

Having said all that, Samsung should pull their head out and get cracking.

Wrong Mike! We have the right to complain to Vodafone. They are quick at taking our money and selling phones on rumored update releases. Furthermore, we as the consumers pay for a service. It should not be up to us to follow up with Vodafone’s business partners!. It should be Vodafone duty to represent us, the customer. Vodafone should voice our concerns and disappointment to its partners. Not us. We bought the product from Vodafone so that’s who we should be complaining too.

of course you have the right to. thing is everyone is constantly complaining to them, its not making their job easier, and they are already voicing their concerns over the matter. in the end it is samsung that gives them the update so samsung is the problem.you dont have to follow up. there are other means in which you can update. but the point is, complaining will not make it come faster. so just wait it out. and stop bombarding these posts every single time. they have said that as soon as news hits in relation to their devices they will share it. since that news has not come yet why would you expect any more than a generic response to the same thing that everyone else is complaining about.

Hi mike and miket, last week we took the concerns of our customers to Samsung who have provided us a statement that’s available in this blog post. We will continue to push Samsung for the release of this software to us for testing independent of any contact you may choose to make with them directly.

Thanks to both of you for taking the time to share your thoughts on the matter. We genuinely appreciate it and the feedback has been noted and will be shared with Samsung at our next meeting. I will let you know if there are any further developments or once the software arrives for testing, whichever happens first, via the Weekly Wraps.

on a side note are we the only country with the samsung galaxy s3 not received the jellybean update? or is this a global thing? or have any other carriers that you know of heard of it.

Hi Mike, to the best of my knowledge the Jelly Bean update for the GALAXY S III has only been released in some smaller eastern European countries and Korea but I’ll be honest, I haven’t been keeping a close eye on global releases in the last week or so. I know that the update has not been released to any Australian-sold handsets at this stage.

What seems to be the hold up with jb on s3? Considering the versions being sold now come with jb as the installed os… Not only have Vodafone been behind in updating their infrastructure, they are also hopeless in keeping customers at the forefront of technological innovation… Why are ur customers the only ones without access to 4g? Not to mention as stated before, jb is on new versions of s3 being sold in Australia… Not good enough Vodafone.. Updates to pre existing customer handsets should come before carriers start selling the product with it pre installed!

Hi Liam, at this stage no Australian carrier has released a build of Jelly Bean for the GALAXY S III and Samsung are still yet to deliver the update to us for testing. While it’s true that some newer products are shipping with Jelly Bean now they are separate products, and follow separate development pathways. We expect to receive the update from Samsung very soon and will test it as a matter of priority.

Personally I’d love to have an update for your (and my own) GALAXY S III, but until Samsung submit one to us for testing and release to customers I’ll be waiting alongside you.

Sorry buddy but I have seen it with my own eyes. An Australian build s3 telstra fone with jb within the last 24hrs. If these fones are being shipped as we speak, clearly the release works on our networks… Sooo, obviously either Vodafone are holding off for some ridiculous reason or Samsung don’t think much of a carrier without 4g capability, which I can definitely understand! Pathetic!

Hi Liam, the GALAXY S III and GALAXY S III 4G are two separate devices. As I said, I’m aware of new products that have been released with Jelly Bean but at this stage no carrier in Australia has released an update to the existing GALAXY S III (GT-i9300/GT-i9300T). Just as is indicated above, at this stage Samsung are still preparing that update for us, so it is a bit difficult for Vodafone to hold off on something we don’t have!

Keep an eye out over the next few weeks for any news regarding the Jelly Bean update for your GALAXY S III (GT-i9300T).
