Software Update Weekly Wrap – 11th July, 2012

Welcome to this week’s Weekly Wrap! This post will give you all the information we currently have on software updates working their way through our labs.

What will this post tell me?

The information in this Weekly Wrap only details information on software updates that manufacturers have advised are currently under preparation for submission, or have physically provided to Vodafone for testing and certification. Although you may hear news about updates from around the web and overseas, please be aware that local delivery timelines can differ. This is due to local hardware variants and Australian regulatory requirements.

What will this post not tell me?

We rely on our manufacturing partners to develop software updates prior to submission to us for testing and certification. We will only provide news on an update once the manufacturer has confirmed its forthcoming availability to Vodafone. However, due to the fluid nature of this development process, delivery schedules may shift and a previously communicated update may not enter testing.

What’s in the labs?

The table below lists all updates that are currently undergoing the various stages of testing.

Regarding the Jelly Bean update for the Galaxy Nexus, will the software be modified (eg. unified search functionality disabled, like that of the Galaxy S3 in America as a result of the Apple lawsuits) or will it remain untouched?

Hi Randy, what a great question! We don’t have any input into the decision to include or not include specific features of the update, only the option to pre-configure our network settings. While we don’t have access to the build at the moment it’s something I’m happy to look into once Samsung deliver it to us for testing.

The post states that the update is being prepared by Samsung, but what are they actually doing with it (since this is an update for a Nexus device, there isn’t any manufacturer customisation/skinning)?

Hi tyn and Randy, apologies for missing this earlier. As mentioned in my earlier reply, we still have input on the option to pre-configure our network settings (including optimisations specific to our network). As I said, we don’t have access to the software yet so I’m as much in the dark as you until I get my hands on it.

Hi Eason, our test cycles are always a minimum of 10 days and there’s time required upon conclusion of testing to review the results, so I hope to have some news in around a fortnight. Keep in mind, however, that should further issues be identified in testing a further cycle may be required.

    hi kieran.
When vodafone going to provide ICS for galaxy note. ICS is available for Note in most of the world since 2-3 months. Are we living in a 3rd world country, why its taking too long. I just bought this phone for ICS and premium suite. Don’t how long it will take.

    • Kieran McIlwain says:

Hi Goldy, the update available in some markets elsewhere in the world is based on the Android 4.0.3 codebase, while the update we currently have in testing is based on Android 4.0.4. So while there is a slight delay you will be getting the latest software available for your device. You can read more about the complicated process a software update has to go through in my previous series of articles, The Android Software Journey.

It’s worth noting that we have not advertised the GALAXY Note as shipping with Android 4.0, so it’s important to ensure you check the specifications on our website or in store rather than online or from overseas before making a decision on purchasing.

I am not blaming Vodafone for this. Before i bought the galaxy note, i have seen videos on Samsung website, where they were saying ICS will be coming shortly for galaxy note with premium suite. i like the feature of premium suite that was the reason to buy galaxy note. other wise no complaint from phone or vodafone service. thanks for you quick reply.

Hi Fernando, there were some issues identified in other markets around the world related to the Android 4.0.3 codebase on the GALAXY Note that we felt would be a poor experience for our customers. Fortunately Samsung have been able to create an update for us using the Android 4.0.4 codebase which we currently have in testing. Although there has been a slightly longer delay, rest assured you’re getting a more recent build of Android and an even better experience.

          Hi Kieran

Hate to be pedantic but quote “Software received from manufacturer, testing scheduled to begin shortly.” unquote was the status on the galaxy note in your weekly wrap on 20 June. I assumed (as would many other people) that it meant that Samsung had passed the update onto Vodaphone and that Vodaphone was conducting its own tests on the update.

Can you please confirm what exactly needs to be done and by who (i.e. samsung or vodaphone) before the update can be released.

Once again thanks for your help. We do appreciate the feedback!

          Cheers

Hi KW, happy to clear this up for you. The software received on the 20th of June was the first round software. After completing the first round of testing, we advised Samsung of any issues we identified and they are now working on resolving them. Once they believe they are fixed, they will submit the second round of software. If after testing those issues are found to no longer be present, we will grant approval for the roll out.

Broadly the process from submission of software to approval is referred to as “testing” even though there may be several rounds of updates required. Under some specific circumstances we will communicate between each round but usually we keep it under the simple umbrella of testing.

    no offence.

Hi Ashish, the 4.0.4 update you received began rolling out on the 21st of June and that’s before Jelly Bean was even announced so this had been in the works for some time prior. The update we rolled out was also of a more recent build (IMM76K) and had more stable network connectivity than previous builds, even though the Android version remained the same.

Every comment I write and every article I publish is me being frank and telling the truth – we genuinely have nothing to hide. In the spirit of Android’s openness, I make these Weekly Wraps as transparent and open as possible. I’m genuinely glad to see that Jelly Bean is rolling out in other parts of the world however we are required by law to test updates to all of our smartphones, including those from Google.

Be sure to keep an eye on the weekly wraps for the latest news as these updates progress through the labs.

I think all of Android base mobile phone company will cheat to their customers. Because they give to mobile phone software update very lately. They still standing on Android 2.3.4 to Android 4.0.4 but at this moment another new Android version 4.1 is already launched. Most of the mobile phones are should be support Android 4.1 version . Our bad luck they does not care about their customer ( specially in Australia ). Very poor software update services.

I recently got Samsung S2 from you guys. It has got ICS 4.0.3. I want to arrange the apps in Menu in alphabetical order but unfortunately there is no option to do that. I checked few forums on the internet and they are asking to download go launcher / touchwiz to get that option. BTW, I checked Samsung S3 and found that there is an option to arrange the apps in alphabetical order.

Can you please pass this to Samsung that we dont want to install an external app to perform that action? Do we have this option in the 4.0.3 Maintenance Release which Currently in testing?

    Please let me know.

Touchwiz should allow for this. Go into the applications list. Hit the menu button, then select “Edit”. You should be able to drag and arrange your applications in whatever order you want. Once you are finished sorting hit menu again then “Save”

Also app sorting only works in “Grid View” and not list mode. If you’re running “List View” change to grid mode and see if you can re-arrange your apps after the change.

    Dear Vodafone,

are we going get the late ICS 4.0.4 from Samsung?

“In addition to fixing a number of bugs and issues the 4.0.4 version adds a few cool new features such as signature unlock and Pop up play. There are also several changes to the UI and icons and a reported performance bump.”

Galaxy Notes will contain pop up with submitted 4.0.4 ICS? Since the original ICS report lagging and less battery life compare to Gingerbread.

Hi Brian, HTC put it best in their recent blog post:
Q: What version of HTC Sense will come with the Android 4.0 update?
A: The upgrade to Android 4.0 will include Sense 3.6.

Q: Why does the Android 4.0 update not include Sense 4?
A: Some aspects of Sense 4 require dedicated hardware, which is not available on all devices.

Hi Leo, the Xperia S we sell is optimised for use on our 850MHz network and as such requires a different build of software than those phones sold by other carriers here and overseas. We’re in our second phase of testing at the moment and if no further issues are uncovered we will approve it for release by Sony.

I guess now either Samsung in USA an in Australia is a different company or they are not adequate enough over here Australia to keep up with the time. At least I get this impression

        Nothing that your in fault.
If they give a time Frame that meananufacure should have been in touch with google and pull their socks up to deliver on time.
It had been regular by Time to time and on every update

I have galaxy nexus and it just feels bad that even having the flagship phone we are not up to date.

Hi Ashish, the GALAXY Nexus is definitely getting Jelly Bean, Samsung are preparing the update for us right now. The device we sold is a slightly different hardware design to the GALAXY Nexus sold overseas (ours is the GT-I9250T) as it is tuned to support our 850MHz network more effectively.

We want you to have the latest software on your handset, but we also want the best possible experience for you. For this reason (along with some regulatory requirements) we test every update to our product range. Unfortunately at this stage though, there is nothing for us to test yet.

    Hi Kieran,

My question is about the Jelly Bean update for Galaxy Nexus. As far as I understand, normally Google release the updates for Nexus devices themselves, but in the weekly update table, for galaxy Nexus it is mentioned that “Manufacturer preparing update for submission to Vodafone for testing”. Do Vodafone usually undertake testing of the OS for Nexus devices? This is the 1st time I’ve heard this.

Hi Bob, we test updates to our entire range of products from USB modems to simple candy bar handsets and indeed Nexus devices. The GALAXY Nexus we sold has a slightly different software variant tweaked to get the most out of our 850MHz network, so it’s on a different code base to the devices sold internationally.

Samsung are preparing the update for us, and once we get our hands on it we’ll complete the testing as quickly as possible. Once approved, however, you’re correct in saying that Google physically rolls the update out.

Hi Jnes, any modification to the hardware of software will render the device unwarrantable. We cannot provide support for software other than that which is approved by Vodafone.

At a more specific level, the GALAXY Nexus we sold is the GT-I9250T hardware variant which is tuned to provide better connectivity on our 850MHz network. This requires a slightly different code base and updates intended for overseas devices may diminish your experience.

        1- Galaxy nexus LTE
2- Galaxy nexus HSPA+ for international market.

Hi Jnes, interesting that you mention we’re an Apple-dominated market – as recent figures have shown that Android accounts for well over 50% of devices sold here in Australia. It’s also interesting to hear that there’s only two GALAXY Nexus devices, as I’m aware of at least two LTE variants in the USA (one for Verizon and one for Sprint, the latter which does not feature a physical SIM slot). As mentioned previously, the model sold here in Australia is the GT-i9250T (you can check this on the label underneath your battery) where as the international HSPA+ device is the GT-i9250.

We love nothing more than to see the latest software updates on your device, but we’re not software developers. We rely on our manufacturers (in this case Samsung) to supply us with updates to verify and approve, after which it is rolled out to customers. Ultimately we can’t release something we haven’t tested, and we can’t test something we haven’t got. I look forward to the Jelly Bean update arriving in our labs but until then I’m afraid our hands are tied. You can learn more about the journey a software update takes from Google to your smartphone in the previous series of articles I’ve written here:

And this could just go on in a loop for a while .. just do a google search .. it is widely documented also on google issues list. Anycase, my question is what I can I expect from the ICS upgrade as it pertains to my RAM. Note, I see people quoting HTC Desire HD as having 725mb of RAM, but my phone only has 600mb. Its on the HTC Site

“After extensive testing, we’ve determined that the current version of HTC Sense with Android provides customers with the best experience on the HTC Desire HD. When we consider new versions of software, we weigh a number of factors, but ultimately the customer experience on the product is the deciding factor. We apologize for any confusion this change may have caused our customers.”

Sorry to bother you with this but, where did the 18th weekly update report go ?
It is not available at this URL anymore … http://blog.vodafone.com.au/blog/software-update-weekly-wrap-18072012/
Is it upon HTC request and/or linked with the DHD update cancellation ?
Thank you in advance for your reply and your commitment to transparency towards customer !

Hi Matthieu, last week’s Software Update Weekly Wrap had to be removed due to a technical error post-publication. There will be a new Wrap posted tomorrow with the latest information. Please be advised that I only have information on software updates for Vodafone Australia and I can see that you’re accessing our site from overseas.

If you have purchased your device from a local carrier, please contact them directly for the latest information related to updates to your smartphone.

Yep same here. Waiting for the weekly wrap. lol damn the Nexus S 4.1.1 halt, raised our hopes sky high and then just had us free-falling…hopefully there’s a chute before the 25th Jul weekly wrap tells us it’s going to be more of a ‘splat’.

    hello

strange that it is july2012 UK ice cream sandwich and New Zealand Ice cream sandwich is already available and this is now JAN 2013 testing takes 10days according to the answers above a fortnight for a bit of further preparing etc etc and yet still no ICS for Australian Vodafone G300 one of Vodafone’s most popular android device yet Australians once again seem to fall into the well this case third class citizen Vodafone you do know that Australia is bigger than NZ. How much further testing really would be required for the Australian version of ICS for the Huawei G300. Although on a positive note to show I am not just a plain old whinger some companies which shall remain nameless and I refer to providers now do very little in the way of updates and some phones provide updates that just simply do not work. Just out of curiosity the one that killed the cat Telstras T-Touch Tab once unlocked can be loaded with Huawei’s proprietary 2.2 fro yo why do vodafone need to be able to control their phones so much there is little to mark android phones as vodafone telstra or optus and the G300 looks just like a normal Huawei non locked phone would it not be simpler to sell the phone unlocked after all I have been a loyal prepaid mind you customer of vodafone for about 20 odd years could you not trust the customer loyalty to prevent using your locked phones on another network? For me I just do not like the term locked and even if I purchased a Huawei say Honour which comes unlocked I still use it with my vodafone card. Virgin did this and suffered little your either optus Telstra or Vodafone I for one will use vodafone til I die or you lose your shares and get bought out. Loyalty is earned not forced although on another positive note at least you do unlock phones. One last comment I read on the WWW that in the UK vodafone customers buy their phones locked and then ask them to unlock them at point of purchase and voila its done for them there and then with sometimes but not awaysl a small fee a lot lot smaller than 75 dollars.

something I failed to mention out of all the unlocked phones I have and the locked G300 Huawei the Vodafone locked G300 did have a better signal and little or no signal loss. So its possible that the extra care taken in testing your devices is worth the wait
