Software Update Weekly Wrap – 13th June, 2012

Welcome to this week’s Weekly Wrap! This post will give you all the information we currently have on software updates working their way through our labs.

Our new Android Software Updates page

Recently we launched our new Android Software Updates page, so our Weekly Wraps will now only focus on updates that are currently undergoing testing.

Check out our blog post for full information on the hows and whats of this new tool.

What will this post tell me?

The information in this Weekly Wrap only details information on software updates that manufacturers have advised are currently under preparation for submission, or have physically provided to Vodafone for testing and certification. Although you may hear news about updates from around the web and overseas, please be aware that local delivery timelines can differ. This is due to local hardware variants and Australian regulatory requirements.

What will this post not tell me?

We rely on our manufacturing partners to develop software updates prior to submission to us for testing and certification. We will only provide news on an update once the manufacturer has confirmed its forthcoming availability to Vodafone. However, due to the fluid nature of this development process, delivery schedules may shift and a previously communicated update may not enter testing.

What’s in the labs?

The table below lists all updates that are currently undergoing the various stages of testing.

Devices which are listed in bold type indicate a change from last week:

Hi Franko, I understand that at the moment Samsung are working through some final quality assurance testing of the update process (both Kies and FOTA) to ensure that the update is delivered effectively and without any issues. At the moment the roll-out is slated for next week, but I don’t have any firmer date than that. Once there’s a firmer date I’ll share the news here on the Blog.

Please don’t just say you’re “working with Samsung on getting it done” like you did in last week’s blog, give an accurate timeline,a week or a month or ANOTHER 3months :S

Hi KSabee, as the GALAXY Nexus is a Google Experience Device the roll-out needs to be coordinated between Samsung and Google. We have tested and approved the update, so I’m afraid our involvement in any decision-making process is now over. I will share any information on roll-out schedule and instructions on how to update as soon as I lay my hands on it, but ultimately the final decision on specific roll-out dates is now one between Samsung and Google. :)

This is the kind of information that is perfect for the Android Software Update page.
There is obviously a problem with the whole Android update process. The buck-passing between Vodafone, Samsung and Google shows an immature process. We need to know the process so that we know who to blame.
My Nexus S got a really fast update to 4.0.4, but my Galaxy Nexus is still running on 4.0.1.

We now have a situation where BYO devices are getting updates first and that’s bad for Vodafone. Because if the situation doesn’t improve in 8 months, when my contract is up, I will simply purchase outright and then possibly look around at other carriers.

This is an opportunity for Vodafone to lead the pack, there Android Update page was a good start.

Hi Adam, thanks for the feedback. I fully recognise how important the timely delivery of software updates is to you and other customers, and it’s something that we’ve been improving over the past six to twelve months. I’m working closely with all of our manufacturing partners to try and improve the speed at which these updates are delivered to us for testing, and working internally to improve the efficiency of the testing process itself.

Regarding the information about the update process, I wrote a series of blog articles at the start of the year which helps step you through how an update makes its way from Google to your handset. We’re currently in the process of building more and more information into our Support Knowledgebase and I’d be happy to look at including this kind of detail. Thanks for the suggestion!

Not exactly a pure Google experience is it when it goes from Google to Samsung to Vodafone? If i bought a device advertised as a ‘Pure Google Experience’, i would expect updates coming straight from Google when it’s announced to my device. And right now with Vodafone’s Google Nexus, it simply isn’t the case. So isn’t this misleading information?

This has left a bad taste in my mouth. My next phone, the Samsung SIII will be bought outright so at least i get my OTA updates directly from Samsung when they hit. No more waiting a further 3 months for Vodafone testing before it gets released to me.

          • Kieran McIlwain says:

Hi Adrian, we test all updates to our range of smartphones including those advertised as Pure Google. The GALAXY Nexus, Nexus S and Nexus One are all examples of Pure Google devices in that they feature no manufacturer or carrier customisation (you can find out more about what these terms mean here). All of those devices’ updates are tested by us before release, at which point we notify the relevant party they can begin the roll-out.

Regarding the time it’s taken for testing, the GALAXY Nexus update was supplied to us in early May (first reported here) and we had the update approved within a few weeks (announced here). At this stage we’re waiting along with you for the update to roll out but it’s now in the hands of Google and the manufacturer (in this case Samsung). As soon as I have news regarding roll-out schedules it will be shared here on the blog :)

Well the update came through. :)

Just reiterating, what I would love to see on the Android update page is a simple workflow of where each version is and what still has to occur. That would be a really good visual display.

Hi Ross, thanks for your patience while we waited for confirmation the update was on the way, I’m excited too! The good news from this is that the update will be based on Android 4.0.4 rather than the 4.0.3-based update that is currently available in other markets.

Good news about about going straight to 4.0.4 with Galaxy Note. I updated to 4.0.3 using Kies and wish I had not because it is very buggy. A lot of minor things not working. Much prefered the Gingerbread. Feel like a guinea pig for the Android geek developers. Especially annoying is the frequent reboots it does automatically.

So, I noticed the Xperia S has got the ICS upgrade coming very soon (Woo!) now given ideal circumstances (obviously things can change) but what would be the average delivery time for the upgrade be based on the past?

    • Kieran McIlwain says:

Hi Daniel, it’s really tough to give a schedule as it’s impossible to know the number of test cycles needed before those test cycles are complete. As a guide, though, major platform upgrades like Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich always undergo a minimum of two test cycles of 10 working days. There will be a delay between these two cycles as any issues identified during testing are resolved by the vendor.

Do you know if Vodafone have an RUU available for 1.29 that I can download to force the phone onto 1.29?

    Thanks

Hi Kyle, the RUU is not available as we have elected to update our customers using Firmware Over-the-Air. However, if you’re having issues it’s something we can look into further. If you can create a thread in our Vodafone Community, our Help & Support Teams can grab some details from you and investigate further as to why the update’s not available.

Hi Muzz, big upgrades like Gingerbread to ICS involve two rounds of testing and a bit of development time in between. It’s tough to give precise ETAs, but at a minimum we need between 3-4 weeks. The timelines you see overseas don’t always line up here in Australia as we have different regulatory requirements and sometimes physically different hardware (which needs different software to go with it).

I’ll keep you up to date each week in the Weekly Wraps, or alternatively you can register for an SMS alert and we’ll send you a message as soon as it’s ready for download. :)
