Software Update Weekly Wrap – 17th October, 2012

Welcome to this week’s Weekly Wrap! This post will give you all the information we currently have on software updates working their way through our labs.

If you’re interested in learning how Android updates make their way from Google to your smartphone, why not have a read of the Android Software Journey?

When will Jelly Bean be available for my phone?

We’re excited at the release of the latest version of Android and would be delighted to see this update roll out to our customers.

In addition to the upgrade for the Nexus S, at this stage the only other confirmations we have received from local vendors regarding Jelly Bean are for the GALAXY Nexus and the Samsung GALAXY S III.

We do not have any further information regarding local availability or eligibility of upgrades to any other existing devices.

As more confirmations are received from local manufacturers, they will be added to the Weekly Wraps so be sure to check back each Wednesday for the latest news.

What you need to know about our Weekly Wraps

We rely on our manufacturing partners to develop software updates prior to submission to us for testing and certification.

This Weekly Wrap contains any and all information on software updates that manufacturers are working on submitting to us for testing, or are already in our labs.

Although you may hear news about updates from around the web and overseas, please be aware that local delivery timelines can differ. This is due to local hardware variants and Australian regulatory requirements.

If the update you’re looking for isn’t included below, it means the manufacturer has not made any indication to us regarding their local plans for Australian release.

What’s in the labs?

Hi Liam, the news is as fresh as it gets as the update arrived in our labs less than half an hour ago! We still need to update some handsets, prepare some test cases and then undergo the quite scientific step by step testing process. We’ll begin testing as soon as possible, and our schedule generally runs for 10 business days.

If any issues are identified there we will request a new build from Samsung and will then retest the updated build. You can find more about the process in the Android Software Journey linked at the beginning of the post.

Hi matt, 100% unknown but a great question for Samsung. We don’t make the updates, only test them. At this stage we’re focusing on the 4.1.1 update and getting it out the door. Should Samsung submit a 4.1.2 update in future we’ll shift our focus to that, but right now it’s all a bit hypothetical.

actually there will be multiple nexus devices and LG is just one of them, samsung are apparently making a nexus 2,and there are rumors of a HTC and Sony one as well.

Nexus will become a certification now and manufacturers can put a new handset in for classification of nexus.

Do you really want the galaxy nexus users to root and install the update and lose our warranty? Us, galaxy nexus users should complain to the ACCC about this. We were mislead to get a galaxy nexus. We are not getting timely updates as advertised. And we are still waiting! I wouldn’t have bought it if I knew this would happen!

Well if the Galaxy S3 gets its Jelly Bean update before the Galaxy Nexus then it looks like I will be making a formal complaint against Samsung for misleading & deceptive conduct as stated in the Competition and Consumer Act 2010. I have never done anything like this before, but failure to provide a stated service which is the primary reason for purchase is serious.

I am an early adopter of technology, I pay more and so I expect what I pay for.

If anyone thinks this is over-the-top or would like to provide some advice please respond.

Nexus S was different, even carrier purchased/contracted phones, all software updates straight from Google (plus a bit of carrier testing), there was no real involvement by Samsung on the role out of the updates for the Nexus S.
Which is why it got JB a few weeks to a month after the release by Google and why 4.1.2 is approved and ready to role already.

Some reason, Google let samsung have a hand in the updates for regional variants of the Galaxy Nexus.

Or is it different to Nexus S?

@ Will the only way to ensure you are not limited by alterations made by Samsung, is if you buy direct from Google Playstore. Unfortunately that’s not possible in Australia (for phones at least). Have friend who brought an international version from Kogan but he still had to flash the phone to yakju version in order to get update

How is it that the latest Nexus device is scheduled to receive the Jelly Bean update after both the older Nexus S and the Galaxy S3????? Kieran, you previously mentioned that perhaps the reason the Nexus S received 4.1.1 before the Gnex is that is has been on older software for longer. Well now they have been approved to receive 4.1.2 before the newest Nexus has received Jelly Bean at all!

As has been stated many, many, many times over the previous weeks, the Galaxy Nexus is supposed to be a pure Google experience. We now have the Nexus S scheduled for 4.1.2, the S3 for 4.1.1 and new devices such as the Galaxy S3 4G being sold with Jelly Bean, yet the Galaxy Nexus is still waiting. How is this a PURE GOOGLE EXPERIENCE?

Kieran, while I understand you are not responsible for this, you have a direct line to Samsung whereas we do not. While you are an S3 owner, (and presumably a phone enthusiast) I’m sure you can understand the EXTREME frustration of other phone enthusiasts/Nexus owners. Please, please SHOUT this message to those who might be able to fast track a resolution to this situation. As it currently stands, I will reconsider any and all future Samsung purchases due to this lack of support shown here….. and I’m sure I am not the only one who feels this way.

S3 is a premium device that should get the update asap or even give a concrete timelines. You are not a round the corner small shop. you are a big firm with a huge customer base.

Couldn’t wait anymore and flashed my GN to yakju 4.1.2 on Wednesday with NO problems. Now I am able to bypass both Samsung and Vodafone and get future updates directly OTA from Google. What’s that I hear about warranty? Just flash the backup of the Vodafone yakjudv in that event. Yes, the whole exercise is risky in the sense of bricking your phone, but somewhat mitigated by being tech savvy and reading blogs and forums diligently. Its a developers phone afterall, so information is plenty but it is possible to pure Android on a GN and used on Australian 3G networks.

  31. Lorenzo says:

The GNex sold in Australia through local carriers is the yakjudv variant of android and in the latest 4.04 update approved by vodafone has the i9250TDVLE1 baseband and for tesltra GNex its i9250TDVLF1 (Both use the 850 band). Yes the infamous “T” version of the GNex because telstra and vodafone like to use the 850 MHz band for 3G and in Australia we are so special that Samsumg have to make a different GNex for us. The baseband provided by samsung and approved by vodafone is only software. In theory many radios can be flashed and they will have varying performance on different networks so I guess Kieran is technically correct on that one as the the vodafone baseband is optimised for 850. To what advantage? I really can’t work out. iPhones (to take one example) and the GNex are made to use 850 and 3G anyway The GNex and the iPhone are quad band for 2G and penta band for 3G at 850 for both. So why does the Gnex need special “optimization” to work in Australia and the iPhone does not? A GNex used here from someone overseas visiting won’t work here based on vodafone logic. Regulatory requirements? Thats simply about radio bandwidth allocation so Vodafone in theory do have a point there. The stock google image and baseband and GNex phone are made to the majority of international RF requirements to which australia follows not leads. Its more about control of the devices running on the RF spectrum which is a vital national asset. Doubt though, apple would let vodafone customise operating software for use on its network. As Kieran says “An iphone is and iphone world-wide). How come iphones don’t need optimisation to run on the vodafone newtork? Hence I am convinced this whole “T” variant business is a load of bollocks. Yes, maybe technically justified and adhering to Australian regulatory requirements, but as far as the masses are concerned used as a smoke screen to a large part. Truth is, nothing wrong with the stock google 4.1.2 baseband either.

I flash yakju (the google ROM) and the “T” is gone from any internal descriptive info on the phone! The new baseband on my phone is the stock 4.1.2 from google (i9250XXLF1) and works just fine so I really do wonder if the “T” is really to designate different hardware for Australia.

Sorry for the long post. In essence. I’ll need a lot of convincing that the yakju build and baseband works any worse than that provided by samsung and vodafone. Just flash to stock Android and never need to visit this blog again. Thanks

        @ about to root GN:
        radio = baseband
on surfing in the phone there’s a H in the signal bar up top and in the settings menu “about phone” menu, I get HSDPA:8 most of the time sometimes HSPA+:15 sometimes. I’m in Ferntree Gully (melb) for that matter. This is on the stock yakju 4.1.2 radio i9250XXFL1.
I can’t say with certainty of this is any better than the Vodafone yakjudv radio on 4.04 i9250TDVLE1, but I can say its NO worse than before when I had vodafones’s “special” T radio “optimised” for 850 MHz. Even that radio wasn’t perfect (max signal – tower in view – pages took eternity to load) and its their own “approved” baseband.
I’m real happy with stock 4.1.2 and its stock radio works( in my opinion) just fine.

    Hi Lorenzo,

I’m on your side and agree 100% your point of view as this is mine as well.
I couldn’t wait any longer and have also changed my GNex last weekend into yakju with baseband i9250XXLF1. I can’t find anything wrong on connnection (so far). Inside the hidden menu *#*#4636#*#* and under the radio we can select AUS or AUS2 or simply Automatic anyway.

Nowadays travelling is so common and international roaming is no new to anybody. Mostly we can use our Aussie phones and use int’l roaming without any problem. Radio ???? Again, as you said our GNex is quad band :)

To change into stock yakju, actually needs only to go through some forum- browse it. Initially this may seem difficult but to follow the step is only a matter of 5 minutes and the phone is now yakju. I got 4.01 yakju then OTA into 4.02 and 4.0.4 at where I set up all my apps, downloaded Flash from Play before jumped to Jelly Bean. Then OTA to 4.1.1. On Wed morning my phone got a message from Google re firmware upgrade into 4.1.2.
I’m now happy and enjoying the truly Google experience.

BTW, if Samsung omits 4.1.1 and jumps onto 4.1.2 directly, does it breach the Gnex’s fastest update statement ?

      @ Raymond C

radio = baseband (software that makes the RF hardware chip modem on phone work)
radio?? a mobile is just another “radio” device that uses certain bands on the RF spectrum. I don’t mean radio radio. you can google and study all the theory like I did. Saves me explaining it.
Look up “radio, baseband, RIL” on google.
4.1.2 just come out last week sometime. VF GN customers missed out on 4.1 and 4.1.1 yes?
I’m no legal guru but I guess there’s something to be said for “misleading and deceptive conduct” in the Trade Practices Act and similar provisions under State acts by parties selling the GN on the australian market.
The impression I got from the ads was the GN was updated before other phones (had top place in the android update queue).
I believe google represented the GN as such. can’t remember if VF did.

I know it was just announced, but is there any news from HTC about the Jellybean update for the HTC One X?
And do you know the approximate dates for Gnex and S2 Jellybean updates?

It’s obvious what Samsung are doing. I waited for them to roll out the 3 month old JB update to my Galaxy Nexus but got frustrated and then just installed the JB update manually. Now I get updates direct from Google and don’t have to wait for Samsung. Will never get another Samsung phone again! JB is awesome BTW!
