Software Update Weekly Wrap – 19th September, 2012

Welcome to this week’s Weekly Wrap! This post will give you all the information we currently have on software updates working their way through our labs.

When will Jelly Bean be available for my phone?

We’re excited at the release of the latest version of Android and would be delighted to see this update roll out to our customers.

In addition to the recent upgrade for the Nexus S, at this stage the only other confirmations we have received regarding Jelly Bean are for the GALAXY Nexus and Samsung GALAXY S III.

We do not have any further information regarding potential upgrades to any other existing devices.

As more information is received from manufacturers, it will be added to the Weekly Wraps so be sure to check back each Wednesday for the latest news.

Ice Cream Sandwich for Sony Xperia S

The Android 4.0.4 “Ice Cream Sandwich” update for Sony Xperia S handsets sold by Vodafone in Australia is now approved.

Sony has advised that they expect to roll this software out in the “next one or two weeks”. We will announce its availability on our blog once it has been confirmed by Sony.

We thank you for your patience while we worked through the approval of this update with Sony.

What you need to know about our Weekly Wraps

We rely on our manufacturing partners to develop software updates prior to submission to us for testing and certification.

This Weekly Wrap contains any and all information on software updates that manufacturers are working on submitting to us for testing, or are already in our labs.

Hi matt, unfortunately Samsung has not met their previously communicated submission date. They are now targeting early October but ultimately we won’t be sure until the update is physically in our hands.

Really really disappointed with the jelly bean update for the nexus. October?? People got JB months ago. We will be the last in the world to get it on the latest nexus even the older nexus s got it a month ago. We are getting ios6 today and jellybean sometime next month? This is a joke. First of all, why can’t we just get pure google nexus from vodafone instead of some sort of vodafone firmware in the nexus that we cant get the update straight from google and must wait for this long, lengthy process from samsung and vodafone! People buy a nexus for a reason unlike other general consumers!

Hi Ken, the software available elsewhere in the world is for a slightly different hardware variant (the GT-i9250). The variant we sell (GT-i9250T) is specifically tuned to work better on 3G 850MHz networks. For this reason the software builds are not compatible with one another.

I understand that vodafone made the galaxy nexus tuned for your network and samsung has to make the update but still consumers expect it to be a nexus even if its from vodafone and this amount of delay is really unacceptable

        Kieran,
Can you just explain specifically what vodafail thinks is the difference between the software for their builds. As to me if you are saying the only difference between the two models is that one supports the 850mhz 3G network . Then that is basically going to be a driver for GPRS/HSPA modem. Which by the looks of it is made by Intel.
So as a proportion of the update you are waiting for it’s like 0.1% of the whole package. the android operating system is not going to particularly care if the radio is running at 850mhz or 1800mhz or 1900mhz it just receive the packet data from the driver.

So really, lets ask this question again. Are you honestly telling your users that Voda is going to let samsung off with another month waiting for a driver for android that most likely is already been written by the company that produces the wireless chip which looks like Intel ?

        • Kieran McIlwain says:

Hi Ryan, although the GALAXY Nexus is a quad-band UMTS device, we set incredibly high standards regarding the RF performances of our devices. As a result, the software builds of our products are often tuned to specifically favour 850MHz over the nearby 900MHz band. Samsung and other vendors are acutely aware of our expectations and they take these into account before submitting software to us for testing.

We are by no means “letting Samsung off” regarding these delays. I have weekly meetings with my counterparts and this very software build is at the top of the agenda. However, ultimately the onus is still on Samsung to deliver a build of software to us for testing. Your voice and the voice of other GALAXY Nexus users has been heard loud and clear, and we’ve made sure that this has also been communicated to Samsung.

We’re actively looking at ways to reduce the amount of time required for testing this update once it’s received, given the lengthy delays in waiting for it to be delivered to us. Sit tight, and as soon as I have any news on the delivery of this update I’ll keep you and other Nexus users informed via these Weekly Wraps.

            Keiran,
While I appreciate you passing on the concerns if you increasing disgruntled Galaxy users to Samsung.
My point remains that this seems to be a concern over the driver for the specific UMTS radio.
Now the actual chip for the radio is not new and obviously worked with ICS 4.0 , and has worked well on being able to tune to 850Mhz rather than 900Mhz. And I would assume that samsung would not be rewriting the code from the ground up for that driver. So essentially we are saying it’s basically going to be the same driver perhaps with a couple of lines of code to fix up any bugs if there are any. And that’s taken them a couple of months.
Pull the other one, it’s got bells on it

Thank god Google bought Motorola. But the good thing about Google is that they will still be spreading the next Nexus range. They expect it to be delivered not just to SAMSUNG…I used to have respect for them…but they have started to frustrate me now! Nexus will come on multiple handsets.

Only sad thing is that the awesome Motorola range is not coming to Australia: “http://www.phonesreview.co.uk/2012/09/17/motorola-droid-razr-maxx-hd-for-australia-hope-scrapped/” due to the frequency band…They might try again and get an awesome Nexus phone…but this time, it could be from HTC, sams…., … and/or even Motorola.

GN update by October???? So disappointed in Google for not having any control over this matter !!!
The only reason I decided to go for a Samsung made device was to get the pure Android experience and get the updates before others (and I was obviously wrong). Otherwise, I would never never buy a Samsung phone !!
And now obviously Samsung is playing with all the GN customers and with Goolge of course by putting the JB update on hold till they release the update for their cheap plastic S III. Yeah Samsung, it sure doesn’t take a genius to understand you are playing dirty to save S III. Who would buy an S III if GN is updated with JB and S III has the older version ?
I’m sufficiently disappointed in Google to go for iPhone 5.

    1. Unfortunately, the bulid number is not the latest, which is 6.1.A.1.58, while the new build released by sony (international) is 6.1.A.2.45.
2.The baseband Version and Kernel vision are exactly the same with international version as far as I concern.
3.Wifi signal is really a big problem. I’ve got very weak wifi signal in the masteroom, while the modem is just outside the room.

The reason why I went on this contract was to stay ahead. Being a Google phone I expect Jellybean to be on my handset with the rest of the world. I CANNOT get Samsung Apps cause my phone is “UNSUPPORTED” by Samsung because it is Google. And YET I AM WAITING ON SAMSUNG to get their act together and SUBMIT something that is already out?!?!?!!

If this does not come out in October, I give no crap waiting….the support I am receiving is null and I might as well get the Update straight from Google. I will look for a i9250T update. I might succeed faster than Samsung!!!!

Voiding warranty – I am getting nothing from them at the moment!!! Then any changes to the software will come straight to me after Google have tested. Now in the state I am currently in, I am getting nothing from Samsung because they tell me its a Google phone and they cant help me…or Samsung Australia says: “We cannot comment at this moment”. Comment on s**t customer service! Vodafone and Kieran what steps are being taken to use your international company name to press on Samsung?! Waiting is not the most desirable quality I want from a company representing the people.

Actually, my contract is with vodaphone….Therefore It’s their problem as far as i’m concerned.
Its is after all vodaphone that locks the handset, and is quick to trumpet that it’s going to be first to roll out the JB update when it was announced in early July. We are now talking about October. That’s nearly 4 months to roll out a software patch. Originally it was claimed that JB did not meet regulatory requirements. now it’s something to do with the UMTS chip and how well it connects to the 850 network.

Given that most respected companies can turn around a software patch within a couple of days and have it tested.
(Think of any security hole in any operating system and how long it takes microsoft or apple (normally but not always) to patch it) It’s the same deal somebodies have to look at some code, work out why it’s defective, write a fix/work around, test it, he’s thats normally fairly automated, package it , and roll it out to people.

You begin to wonder about the drivel being fed to us.

Hi Ryan, it’s important to note that the Nexus S and GALAXY Nexus are separate devices. I have never made any comment that Jelly Bean was due to roll out to the GALAXY Nexus in July. While true that the update for the Nexus S was delayed beyond its initial targeted release date, no such release date has ever been set for the GALAXY Nexus.

Although other companies may be able to turn around a software patch quite quickly a patch is substantially smaller update and requires less work than an entire platform upgrade for a handset. As I’ve also mentioned, we still do not physically have the update from Samsung to begin the testing you mention can be completed quite quickly. It’s impossible to test something we don’t have.

I understand your frustration at the situation and as a Vodafone customer we’re doing everything in our power to make your voice heard with the right people (Samsung), but there are always certain things that are in our control, and certain things that are out of our control.

Regarding the SIM locking of your handset, all postpaid Vodafone handsets can be unlocked for free by visiting http://vodafone.com.au/unlock and following the instructions.

While you do keep mentioning that you supplier has let you down in not providing you the software. I would point you in the direction of google code where any techy in Vodaphone could download one of the images or even download the source code and compile a copy specifically for the phone…takes about a day to set up a system to do it.
The whole point of the google nexus and nexus s is that they basically run the vanilla builds of the android OS so you dont need to wait for the manufacturer to pollute it with their nasty software (i’m thinking Samsung woeful touch interface)

“Regarding the SIM locking of your handset, all postpaid Vodafone handsets can be unlocked for free by visiting http://vodafone.com.au/unlock and following the instructions.”

Good to know , but i’m on a contract.

Hi Ryan, the images available on Google’s developer website are not suitable for the Australian market and are for the GT-i9250 hardware variant, not the GT-i9250T variant we sell. The work Samsung needs to do is to ensure that the software build complies with Australian regulatory requirements and the baseband is tuned to prefer 3G 850MHz.

Trust me when I say that if there was any way we could get this software released sooner we would have done so.

      Callum,

What you fail to understand is that at least, I am content with ICS. Well having had it for nearly a year I am very much happy with it. But with the introduction of Jellybean so long ago by Google and also Samsung, the failure rate of Samsung has caused frustration. Its like telling a kid they are going to get a present for Christmas in July and then waiting till almost Christmas to hand it over, they arent going to be amused! Also with the updates, it makes what we have, a Datsun, look and act more like a Ferrari (speed reference)

It is not because of iOS6 that they havent released, more so they should have countered Apple with the release! As a side note, some of the features from Jellybean and ICS seemed to be imitated by Apple in their new update.

You may be a proud owner of a S3, but realise this, you only got 4.0.4 at most a couple of weeks ago, and we have been waiting for a couple of months for JB and if not having held onto ICS for almost a year!

Internationally Vodafone is releasing Jellybean, other Aussie carriers are not well spread internationally and being with Vodafone is definitely beneficial. Its like almost being in Europe watching the technology explode. That is why I am with Vodafone and not with other carriers….”every other carrier locked phone even that’s not on vodafone that I know also don’t have 4.1.1″ So i dont care what they are doing if they are behind Vodafone.
Callum: “maybe you should do your research, it’s google’s problem not vodafones” more like Google has nothing to do with it but rather Samsung is solely responsible for the updates. If we got a Google phone directly, or we root the phone…then we get it straight from Google!

Oh and you might like to know this too. Samsung have announced they will be releasing Jellybean to other handsets
      (http://www.androidcentral.com/samsung-updates-android-41-jelly-bean-roadmap) including:
GALAXY Tab 2 7.0 & 10.1, GALAXY Note 10.1, GALAXY SII, GALAXY Note, GALAXY Tab 7.0 Plus, GALAXY S Advance, GALAXY SII LTE, GALAXY Music, GALAXY Chat, GALAXY Ace 2, GALAXY Beam, GALAXY Ace Plus, GALAXY mini II and GALAXY S DUOS.

Hi Jason, the latest currently approved version for the GALAXY S II is Android 4.0.3. Samsung have not indicated their plans for future upgrades be that to either 4.0.4 or Jelly Bean, but if that changes these Weekly Wraps are the best place to find any news.

Can someone with the GS2 and 4.0.3 possibly do me a small favor. Can you take a screenshot of your dial pad for me and link me to it here?

Anyone who can I would be very very appreciative.

Actually even easier… Can someone with the GS2 and 4.0.3 possibly do me a small favor.

Tell me when you go to the dialpad are there still only 3 options at the top = Dial, Call Log & favourites?

The 4.0.1 I had removed the “contacts” tab from the top which annoyed the hell out of me and my friends optus GS2 has all 4 tabs so Im wondering if it’s a version thing or if vodafone removed the contacts tab :/

Cheers for any info from anyone :)

This ICS update for the Sony XS that Vodafone gave us is an outdated one. Sony has already released a firmware to fix the bugs internationally( mostly to make the phone sleep better hence better battery life), but the phone being from Vodafone will probably not get it until next year, or worse, ever.

Hi xtacee1990, the update we approved was the only update supplied to us by Sony. To the best of my knowledge, this update has not been made available to any local carrier. I have asked our counterparts at Sony for information regarding this later firmware release with a view to test and grant approval should it be made available to us.

Thanks for your reply. But didint you guys test the software? I remembered the very reason Vodafone and some forum moderators used to justify the delay was because Vodafone wanted to give customers the best user experience. All the bugs in this update are so obvious anyone with a bit knowledge about phones will notice and the bugs have been reported in Sony’s forums as well. But it still got approved after prolonged delay and still have the bugs. Seems like the only thing you tested it for was the compatibility with your network and not the user experience.

Hi xtacee1990, the primary reason for our testing is to ensure regulatory compliance and ongoing compatibility with our network. We do not test specific features of handsets. We were aware of a slight performance degradation when compared with the previous Gingerbread release however we believe the benefits of the added features introduced in Ice Cream Sandwich greatly outweighed it.

It’s also worth noting that there was significant pressure to deliver this update to market from a number of customers (yourself included). We proceeded to test, approve, and ask Sony to release the only update that was supplied to us. If you are unhappy with the performance of your handset since the upgrade, our Service Centres can roll your device back to the previous Gingerbread release.

If Sony supply us with a maintenance release to test we will work on approving that for release.

Hurry up Samsung u are making your customers go away from you to Sony because of their intricate UI. (Oh yes i know GN is a Google device but i am just saying it from trying an s3)… but hey I might buy the S4 when it comes out or the gn3 which comes out by the end of next year… Oh and guys i hate to break it to you but i rang up samsung and they said Australia is getting jb at the end of this year. The issue with the wake lock is a well known issue. If you go to xda you’ll see how much it has been talked about. Even w/out doing anything the battery will just drop consistently and at a much faster rate than how it did in GB. And FYI factory reset will wipe out ALL your apps and I dont have time to re-download all my apps and set them up again.
