Software Update Weekly Wrap – 20th June, 2012

Welcome to this week’s Weekly Wrap! This post will give you all the information we currently have on software updates working their way through our labs.

Our new Android Software Updates page

Recently we launched our new Android Software Updates page, so our Weekly Wraps will now only focus on updates that are currently undergoing testing.

Check out our blog post for full information on the hows and whats of this new tool.

What will this post tell me?

The information in this Weekly Wrap only details information on software updates that manufacturers have advised are currently under preparation for submission, or have physically provided to Vodafone for testing and certification. Although you may hear news about updates from around the web and overseas, please be aware that local delivery timelines can differ. This is due to local hardware variants and Australian regulatory requirements.

What will this post not tell me?

We rely on our manufacturing partners to develop software updates prior to submission to us for testing and certification. We will only provide news on an update once the manufacturer has confirmed its forthcoming availability to Vodafone. However, due to the fluid nature of this development process, delivery schedules may shift and a previously communicated update may not enter testing.

What’s in the labs?

The table below lists all updates that are currently undergoing the various stages of testing.

Devices which are listed in bold type indicate a change from last week:

So the Galaxy SII is bold this week but it states that the current version is 4.0.3 and the future version is also 4.0.3. Is this supposed to state that the manufacturer is preparing the 4.0.4 update for submission to Vodafone?

Hi Ben, Samsung is preparing a maintenance release for us at the moment, that means that although the Samsung software version will change, the Android version remains the same. Hope this helps :)

Hi Ben, no release notes at this stage (they usually come through once we’ve approved the update), but they will be shared once we release the update :)

          • Kieran McIlwain says:

Hi Yavuz, perhaps poor wording on my part. We have the release notes but we don’t share them until the approval has been granted as the features and inclusions do occasionally change during the testing and development period.

Just wondering if there was any rough ETA on the XPERIA ARC release?

Hi Jai, ETAs are tough to give as there are so many moving parts with a software update. Our test cycles run for 10 working days and major updates like Gingerbread to ICS require a minimum of two cycles. You can register for an SMS alert here to be notified when it’s ready if you’d prefer not to check back each week.

Hi Gurneet, you’d have to check in with Sony on their release plans for non-branded Xperia S handsets as I only have info on the Vodafone schedule. Speaking of schedules though, testing is a complicated process and schedules shift all the time. It’s tough to give you an accurate ETA but as soon as there’s any solid news, it’s shared here.

Hi Muzz, it’s tough to give an ETA before testing has even started I’m afraid. Most ICS updates are tested and released within 3-4 weeks but there may be unforeseen issues which require more testing and development. Make sure you check back each Wednesday for the latest news.

Hi Shiv, I can see that you’re contacting us from India so I’m not sure I’ll be able to give you all the info you’re after. The HTC Incredible S was never sold by us here in Australia, so I don’t have any indication on the plans for updates to that handset. Hi Raffy, the information I have from Sony is that the Android version in the update will be 4.0.3, however this may change between now and release. Once it’s confirmed the table will be updated, but until then it’s safest to keep it at a rather generic “4.0″ :)

Hi Kevin, for major platform upgrades like Gingerbread to ICS there are always a minimum of two rounds. If issues are uncovered in the second round, another cycle of bugfixing and re-testing must take place. We won’t know if another round is required until this one is finished however. I will keep you up to date with any changes each week, however.
