Software Update Weekly Wrap – 25th July, 2012

Welcome to this week’s Weekly Wrap! This post will give you all the information we currently have on software updates working their way through our labs.

What will this post tell me?

The information in this Weekly Wrap only details information on software updates that manufacturers have advised are currently under preparation for submission, or have physically provided to Vodafone for testing and certification. Although you may hear news about updates from around the web and overseas, please be aware that local delivery timelines can differ. This is due to local hardware variants and Australian regulatory requirements.

What will this post not tell me?

We rely on our manufacturing partners to develop software updates prior to submission to us for testing and certification. We will only provide news on an update once the manufacturer has confirmed its forthcoming availability to Vodafone. However, due to the fluid nature of this development process, delivery schedules may shift and a previously communicated update may not enter testing.

What’s in the labs?

The table below lists all updates that are currently undergoing the various stages of testing.

Hi Kevin, the table above lists the most current information we have on the update and every device is checked before publication. At this stage we are still expecting HTC to deliver second round software to us shortly, however if that changes the news will be shared here.

Looks like a typo there somewhere – The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is only on 3.2. Either missed a v or added an extra .1 :)

Hi Leon, if your EVO 3D is Vodafone stock you will receive it in-line with the roll out to other Vodafone devices. The best way to check is whether or not you have a Vodafone start-up animation. If so, you’re in luck! If not, you’re probably best placed to contact Crazy John’s directly for details on the roll out to their devices.

As an aside, in a previous comment you asked about the Android version the update will be shipping with – I’ve just confirmed that this will be Android 4.0.3 with HTC Sense 3.6.

Kieran – Any news on what went wrong with the Nokia Lumia 800 update to MCR3?

Your post describes the update as “This update is now available” – which is a bit inaccurate, as nobidy has got it yet.

Any indication of ETA would be appreciated – as I need to know if I should go out and get a dedicated WiFi Hotspot device for my trip next week.

    Cheers,

As you’re aware, we can’t release an update without testing it, and unfortunately we can’t test something we don’t have.

a bit disapointed with the JellyBean for Nexus S – from yes you will be the first people to get it to I’m not too sure whats going on. I guess its just the expectation Vodafone threw out there and then saying whoops my bad – not JB yet. It would be good to see why the rollout turned out this way – I mean from the ICS rollout it didn’t give out false expectations, I’m not too sure if its because there’s push from marketing (Twitter post promising update)?

    What the?

Does this mean you have it and are testing? Is it pre-release? Is it something where the Nexus S might not get it?

    Most useless update ever.

Doesn’t tell us whether we are getting it or not. Whether you are/have actively testing/tested it. Whether you’ve even seen it yet.

May as well write “Stuff” for the update field for it. Just as useful and just as accurate as what is there.

    Hi Kieran,

    I have two questions;
How do Vodafone normally supply their updates? Is it over the air or would it be with the phone’s compatible computer suite, such as Kies for Samsung?
And I have a Samsung Note which was purchased from Vodafone but has been unlocked using the website and is now being used with another carrier, will I still receive and/or need the official Vodafone update?

Hi Damian, Samsung supply their software using both Kies and Firmware Over-the-Air (FOTA). Occasionally there may be a small delay between the release via Kies and the release via FOTA. Regarding your handset, your device will still follow our upgrade path as we were the carrier who sold it to you. The SIM card you’re currently using has no bearing on update eligibility.

Does anyone know if the samsung galaxy s3 4.0.4 release 2 cover this cell battery draining issue? Ive just re signed up to a 2 year contract and swapped to the android system from iphone ios, and i need to know fairly quickly on whether this issue is going to be fixed soon. I really don’t want to be stuck with a system (after swapping over) that doesn’t give me a usable phone.

Hi Ian, we’ll only grant approval to the software once it’s in a condition suitable for release. Due to the nature of testing, we can’t provide an ETA on this.

obviously Xperia S ICS update has encountered major challenges coz the test duration seems endless
the second round test has already costed at least 4weeks, not saying the first round test

Hi mike, I’m not in a position to comment on HTC’s plans for future updates. I’d recommend contacting them directly for information.

HI, for the Nexus S where (I swear it didn’t say this this morning) “We’ll let you know when Jelly Bean is available. Please stay tuned.”, does that mean it’s done being tested/checked and is going to be released soon?

Hi Nick, at this stage Samsung are still preparing that update for submission to us. I’m afraid we just don’t have an update to test. Testing of updates is absolutely vital, and we can’t release something we haven’t seen or approved, and I’m afraid it’s impossible to test something we don’t have.

I’ll keep you updated if anything changes but until then stay tuned.

The official response from HTC is that they cancelled the ICS update for the HTD desire HD due to the inability to secure Customer data…will it still be released if we the customer sign off that we don’t care if we lose data and have the latest release????
I would choose and OS update over losing data (which I have backed up anyway).
