Software Update Weekly Wrap – 28th March, 2012

Welcome to this week’s Weekly Wrap! This post will give you all the information we currently have on software updates working their way through our labs.

If you’ve ever wondered how an update makes its way from Google to your Android smartphone or tablet, we hope this series will help to shed some light on the process. Check out the first instalment here.

What will this post tell me?

The information in this Weekly Wrap only details information on software updates that manufacturers have advised are currently under preparation for submission, or have physically provided to Vodafone for testing and certification. Although you may hear news about updates from around the web and overseas, please be aware that local delivery timelines can differ. This is due to local hardware variants and Australian regulatory requirements.

What will this post not tell me?

We rely on our manufacturing partners to develop software updates prior to submission to us for testing and certification. We will only provide news on an update once the manufacturer has confirmed its forthcoming availability to Vodafone. However, due to the fluid nature of this development process, delivery schedules may shift and a previously communicated update may not enter testing.

What’s new?

Recently we received some feedback regarding the legibility of new information each week being lost in the larger table.

We are working towards a more permanent solution for this historical data, but in the interim we will provide a quick summary of what’s new each week at the top of the post

If you’re looking for information regarding past updates, the full list is available further down in this post.

Is it stated what improvements the Galaxy Nexus 4.0.4 update will bring? Because as I know, this update is only available for CDMA handsets only.

Hi Ahmato, I’m afraid that certain information regarding future software updates remains confidential between Vodafone and our partners. Samsung have advised us that they are preparing an update to the GALAXY Nexus and that the version number of that update is 4.0.4. Once the update is released, I’ll post a full article on the specifics including improvements, availability and technical information.

        Hi Kieran,

We understand the journey software goes from Google’s release to our phone, though why don’t Vodafone add their software and ‘test’ iPhone software updates?

I don’t understand how Apple manage to release their software without any intrusion from the telcos, yet Android phones have to go through this process?

I know Apple handle their updates themselves, so why can’t Android manufacturers do the same? I’m sure Samsung are capable of releasing the ICS update for the Galaxy SII without the need of Vodafone to look over it. And if it’s that important that Vodafone have to look at the software update, then why don’t they do that with the iPhone updates?

        Care to make any comments?

Hi Joshua, thanks for your comment – I’m happy to answer the points you’ve raised. The simple truth and short answer is that we test all software updates to our existing range of handsets including those from Apple.

The slightly longer answer is that we’re limited in what information we can share on the testing process iOS updates undergo due to commercial arrangements in place with Apple, and I’m under an obligation to respect those agreements. Unfortunately what that means is that I can’t include information about upcoming iOS updates in the Weekly Wraps.

While often the first thing you hear about an iPhone update is when it’s released over-the-air or via iTunes, it doesn’t discount the fact that a lot of work has gone into preparing that update prior to release.

Another reason for iThings updating quicker is Apple only have one or two models to update, and they are all the same. Android updates need to be configured for hundreds of different machines.
Android owners have a lot more choice than iPeople, but the flipside is that our updates can take longer.
Having said that, I’m still hanging out for ICS on my GS2 :-)

          • Joshua says:

            I see.

That actually explained a lot. Sounds like Apple send their software to all the telcos and get them to test it, once they all get the ok, then Apple announce and release the software.

That’s actually a pretty good strategy, rather than Google’s way of; revealing it, having all the consumers drool over it while the manufacturers get busy getting it to work on their phones and the telcos testing the update.

            Thanks for the reply.

          • Darren says:

@Joshua, you don’t seriously think that Apple would wait for the approval from hundreds of telcos worldwide before releasing each minor update? Do you really think that Vodafone Australia would have any means to delay the global rollout of an iOS upgrade? Kieran said that they test the update and presumably Vodafone can provide feedback to Apple. He didn’t say they could in any way force alterations or delay that update. Apple, by manufacturing the phone that no carrier feels that could be without, has sufficient clout to force carriers to accept their terms. Unfortunately, Android manufacturers do not but to be honest many of them don’t have the resources to provide timely updates across their entire range of devices (which is clearly a problem of their own making).

Maybe you should put that link http://blog.vodafone.com.au/blog/the-android-software-journey-part-1/ at the top of these weekly updates IN BIG CAPS LETTERS so people stop complaining and junking up this message board ;)

JJ… It wont stop them complaining. They want the newest update now.. they wanted it before it was released even. And if Vodafone HAD rushed it out, they would be the same ones who would complian about any bug and cry loudly that Vodafone failed to test it properly.

I have a GS2, I too wish the update was out now… but if it isnt ready, it isnt ready.

Thumbs up for the new table layouts, wasn’t too sure if the 4.04 update for Nexus S means its newer than the 4.0 update (which was in testing for the past 10 weeks), and whether this sorta hinted we will be getting it soon, or whether the 4.0 build was ditch for the 4.03 build (meaning it may be another 10 weeks for us).

Hi Cam, under certain circumstances updates for Google Experience Devices (such as the GALAXY Tab 10.1v, Nexus S, GALAXY Nexus and Nexus One) are physically deployed by Google using their software-update framework even though the updates are prepared by the relevant manufacturer. The Android Software Journey was written to provide a general overview of the process and how it applies to a majority of devices, however there will be a few minor differences between each.

The only thing that is different for your 10.1v is that instead of Samsung physically deploying the update, it will be managed by Google.

So what’s changed here then Kieran? Last week’s blog said it was pending roll-out by the manufacturer, Tim confirmed that in the Community thread last week, and now out of the blue it’s Google we’re waiting on. I don’t understand why this process keeps changing.

Hi Michael, there’s no need to be alarmed. Tim mentioned that we were working with Samsung on the details of release and the timeframes involved and that remains the case. The change to include “Google” in place of “Manufacturer” is simply to provide more transparency and accurate information to you.

The process has not changed – the update is approved by Vodafone, and it will be deployed to your devices. As I said in my reply to Cam, the only difference is that it will be Google who does this deployment rather than Samsung. We will continue to keep you informed of any news as it becomes available either here in the Weekly Wraps or in the Community.

I wouldn’t say I’m alarmed so much as just a little frustrated. We’re SO close to 3.2.1 now, and to see yet another stakeholder thrown in to the mix was the catalyst for seeking clarification :)

Hi Michael, glad I could clear the air for you. Rest assured that myself and the other members of the Devices team, along with our counterparts at Samsung understand how important this update is to you and other 10.1v users. We’re working on getting the update deployed as soon as possible and will update you when there’s more info to share.

    @Darren,

So then what do Vodafone test on the iPhone? If Vodafone somehow find some big bug in an iOS release, they can’t do anything to stop the rollout from happening, so what are they even doing?

Am I to believe that Android software has to comply with “ACMA regulations for telecommunications devices” but iOS doesn’t? If an iOS firmware doesn’t comply with the AMCA regulations, then what happens?

Kieran’s ‘Android Software Journey’ states that Vodafone check to make sure the phone is compliant with the AMCA regulations for Android, is this done with iOS too?

The Vodafone guys love talking about their Android journey blog but don’t follow it.

In part 2 (http://blog.vodafone.com.au/blog/the-android-software-journey-part-2/) they claim they only add 3 apps to Android as part of their carrier customisation, yet the 2.3.5 Galaxy S II update came with GFG 2012 to go along with the GFG 2011 and the various game demos that came with the phone, all of which cannot be removed. I asked Samsung about it and they blame Vodafone and Vodafone support just blamed Samsung and ignored my followup emails.

So I hope Vodafone follow their blog and don’t provide any extra apps which can’t be removed with ICS. If I need them I can download them myself through Google Play.

So I assume the TXTReadr, Who2Call, Vodafone Games, Vodafone Music, Vodafone News, Vodafone Sport are all Samsung apps, all of which are not mentioned in their blog and which also cannot be removed.

I know I made the mistake of buying the phone through Vodafone, but at least allow me to remove these things so I can reclaim the space and tidy up the desktop. I don’t think that’s too much too ask.

When I bought my previous Nokia smartphones through Vodafone, they all came straight from Nokia, with no customisations from Vodafone. All the updates, came straight from Nokia as soon as they were released and I had no problems at all running them on the Vodafone network.

All of a sudden Android is so buggy that its needs to be tested for months on end by Vodafone, I find that hard to believe.

Hi AndroidFan, as mentioned in the Software Journey post there may be additional applications that a manufacturer includes as part of their customisation. Good Food Guide 2011 and 2012 are part of Samsung’s customisation for the GALAXY S II and unfortunately we have no input on the inclusion of those apps.

While we can’t control what our manufacturers place into the software, I can confirm that the Android 4.0 update currently in testing for the GALAXY S II only has the three apps from us that I’ve referenced in the article. Certainly TXTReadr, Who2Call, Vodafone Games, Music, News and Sport were included by us in the past, but we have responded to feedback from our customers and where possible are actively removing them in software updates to existing devices.

All new Android devices ranged by Vodafone will only include Vodafone Central, Vodafone Updates and My Vodafone.

Now, if you can just shorten/remove the Vodafone vids which play everytime the phone is started/shutdown, which slows down rebooting, then the phone would be perfect :)

So the testing for ICS 4.04 on the Nexus S is starting again from scratch??? (presumably the last testing for the past 10weeks was on 4.03??)

Does this mean we are now potentially no closer to getting ICS on the Nexus S then we were 10 weeks ago??

Seriously the lack of transparency with Vodafone is simply appalling and the constant referrals to the ‘Android Software Journey’ blog as a seemingly legitimate way of explaining why nothing is happening is getting a little old.

We have been waiting close to 5 months now since the initial ICS roll out for the Nexus S and they have just decided to start testing a new build?? Can someone be honest with the paying customer for once??

Hi Trippa, unfortunately we only have control over the testing of software updates not the development of them. Our role in the process is to test and certify updates for the Australian market, not code or develop any updates ourselves. If a manufacturer requires significant time to address bugs or issues raised during the testing process there is nothing we can do to expedite that process.

The initial roll-out of ICS for the Nexus S (which began around three and a half months ago) was halted by Google to address concerns over the stability of the software (this detail has also been widely reported around the web). Up until last week, we had not been supplied with an updated build to test. We have now received a new build, and in the interest of full transparency to you and our customers, that information was included in the Weekly Wrap.

Damitha: Testing takes time. I doubt you will go and get a GS3 just because ICS for GS2 hasnt finished being tested. As Ive said before… it’s better to wait than get a brick because the update is a bomb. Usually it’s a 4 to 8 week process (could be a bit longer). Try to understand that updates for the GS2 are NOT the only updates being tested ;)

I’ve been frustrated to a point where I have to post on this blog. I’ve been checking regularly for ics update to my s2 and still no confirmed release date so I gave up…….I think it’s fair for people who purchased one of (if not) the top of the range android phone less than 12months ago to expect updates in a timely manner? it’s been 6months since ics was announced and we still have no idea of when ics will be push out to s2.

People who asked question about updates to their phone showed they still care, for me, this will be my first and last post (rant if you want to call it that way) because I no longer care what Vodafone do with ics. They can have it all to themself if they want.

Hi Haipad, I’m sorry to hear that you feel this way. A lot of work goes into developing an Android update for a handset and the announcement of a new version is just the start of that process. We were the first to announce that we had received the Android 4.0 update the GALAXY S II and we began testing almost immediately. The testing process we undertake is vital to ensure that updates meet Australian telecommunications regulations and Vodafone’s expectations around the experience our customers have with their devices.

At this stage testing is still under-way. The update to Android 4.0 being a major platform upgrade, we need to give more time for the manufacturer to address any bugs uncovered during testing. We’re working hard on delivering this update to customers as soon as possible and fully understand how important these advances are, but sometimes these things take time. I’ll continue to provide weekly updates on the progress of updates here in the Weekly Wrap, but sometimes the latest news is that there is no news. As soon as that changes though, you’re in the best place to find out.

ICS has been out for awhile now but that is stock android. Remember your S2 is a heavily modified version of Android with TouchWiz. It took Samsung awhile to get the ICS out to networks to test and this had nothing to do with Vodafone. The disapointing thing from our perspective here in Australia is that Vodafone Australia were the first carrier worldwide to announce the update was received and in testing and we are still waiting for it unlike our UK couterparts who have received it.

This I think is half the reason people are peed off…. all other australian carriers adhere to the same regulations that vodafone do and can release updates in a timely manner ….but vodafone are last to the party and In all honestly I read the android journey and if all telcos go through this process doesnt explain why vodafone takes that much longer.

Going by previous blogs if people take the stock update from google or samsung is vodafone suggesting they are breaking the law as you have stated that vodaonfe firmwares /kernels are checked to make sure they adhere to the communication guidlines…. same with apple they rollout it out for all devices worldwide …. doesnt really ring true to me.

Note the Galaxy nexus 4.04 update is there for testing… (from what I read across various forums and might not be true but google OTA updates are skipping 4.03 & 4.04 and going straight to 4.05 for GSM devices ) … still none the wiser to the improvements in these small increments ….

Ignore if you dont have a nexus:
My current niggles – orientation rotation is sluggish …changing volume in poweramp is sluggish … changing songs is sluggish …. movies on various apps crash back to the menus when there are blips in the file… frequent crashes of app back to home page (likely apps not fully compliant with nexus)…wifi is patchy sitting couple of feet from my routers… when I do updates that flag my location my phone thinks its about 100km west of where I am .. which is normally Lara in victoria !! (GPS works not too bad for maps etc just rather unusual location bug)… movies taken with the camera pick up lense noises…. thats the main niggles and Im on 4.02 … Think we’ll be at Key Lime Pie before its stable. Apart from those its fairly slick…

Hi akoli and keith, thanks for the feedback. To the best of my knowledge the Android 4.0 update is not available for any Australian GALAXY S II devices, either bought through a carrier or direct from suppliers. The difference to this would be if the device was imported from overseas which would follow a different update path.

    Hi Kieran,

While I understand that Vodafone Hutchison Australia reps are under huge pressure complete with a new CEO its still not a good way to do business the way its presently done, its been 3 weeks now with no email reply from you about the poor level of customer service that Three Mobile customers receive with regards to the SGS2 Android 2.3.5 and future Android 4.0.3 firmeare upgrades with regards to the way the Three Mobile version handles network selection and if the end user can manually select and lock the handset into GSM Only mode as Three Mobile version of the SGS2 with Android 2.3.5 does not provide such option.

I mentioned above that the company is called Vodafone Hutchison Australia and therfore both brands in operation (Vodafone & Three and you can include Crazy Johns also) need to look after both sides of the subscriber systems, I mentioned in the previous posts that the Three Mobile version of the SGS2 with Android 2.3.5 (DUJK1) firmware basically cripples the end user from being able to use alternative to 3 Broadband Zone network zones on offer (3 2G, Talk & Messaging i.e.: Roaming 2G and Mega i.e.: Roaming 3G) …

I did a test last week by installing a I9100 ICS 4.0.3 OPEN EUROPE firmware and found that the modem file allowed for GSM Only mode and when in WCDMA/GSM mode a network scan showed all avialible 3G & 2G networks as separate networks, that said I found ICS 4.0.3 overall was not that good or optimised compared to 2.3.3 DUKF4 (original firmware) wheras the official via Kies for the SGS2 Three Mobile version 2.3.5 basically cripples network selection ect ect …

Again I understand this takes time to get a reply but really their should be some sort of update by now that Three Mobile customers face should they want to update firmware on their device.

My own investigation with Samsumg was a dead end as they can’t disclose such info based on commerical agreements in place with VHA, so now that leaves me again asking you the question about if the Three Mobile version which as mention is currently being tested with 4.0.3 has crippled with the same modem options for network selection (i.e.: has GSM Only option been restored) and if the modem separates the 3G / 2G networks during network scan.

On my end this is very important answer to know as its one of the main ressons why I have not switched over to Vodafone as I need the extra coverage options that Thre Mobile customers currently enjoy over being an outright Vodafone customer.

I look forward to you’re reply.

Sent from my SGS2 with Android DUKF4 2.3.3 firmware.

    Cheers

According to the info table above VHA are now testing Android ICS 4.0.3 for Three Mobile variant, Kieran a simple test by you or one of the others that are testing the SGS2 with ICS 4.0.3 can surely provide the info requested.

        Step by step:
        Press on settings
        press on wireless & network
        press on mobile networks
        press on network mode

a pop up will appear and show what network mode options are on offer for the end user to select:

The OPEN EURO ICS 4.0.3 firmware showed the following (as does Android 2.3.3 DUKF4)

        GSM/WCDMA (Auto Mode)
        GSM only
        WCDMA only

Android 2.3.5 DUJK1 (for Three Mobile AU) showed
        GSM/WCDMA (Auto Mode)
        WCDMA only

In other words again to clarify, the firmware update from 2.3.3 DUKF4 to 2.3.5 DUJK1 removed the option of GSM only mode for the end user (i.e.: the handset owner) to select.

A simple inspection by you or another person in the devices team that has a Three Mobile version of the SGS2 with ICS 4.0.3 can simply reply back with what the network selection option is now with ICS 4.0.3 for Three Mobile firmware version.

its not that hard Kieran to do such a test and reply back as you have working versions being tested.

The other main issue is if the modem file has been changed back to separate 3G and 2G networks during network scan as 2.3.5 JK1 does not do that and as such those of us with Three Mobile can’t manually select “3 2G” or “Roaming 2G” as the modem file with 2.3.5 JK1 will try to select 3G version of Vodafone and Telstra and thus not allow access to the respective 2G networks.

I have tried to be a nice as possible with my comments but really it seems to me that VHA don’t give a damn about those remaining customers on Three Mobile, its very annoying to say the least as I mentioned the other day the company is called VHA – Vodafone Hutchinson Australia which operate 3 brands, Vodafone, Three Mobile and Crazy Johns, so please do not discard those of us remaining on Three Mobile, again on my end I need the extra coverage option that Three Mobile provide over being an outright Vodafone customer and please don’t go on about the new 850MHz network, its no good to me when the only network option I is “Roaming 2G/3G” which means when we are eventually going to be “roaming on Vodafone 3G/2G” I will be left with no coverage as the roaming deals with Telstra end, its a population drop of close to 2% (going from 96% to 94% with no sign of VHA even attempting to match what three Mobile now offer).

        Regards
        TGV

If you’d prefer not to wait, however, I’d recommend backing up your device and dropping it off to a store to have it sent for Service. Given what has been said in here already about how few Vodafone changes there are, and in the android software journey blog posts, we can only assume that the delay means that there has been one or two bugs uncovered.

I know Vodafone wont confirm or deny this, as they have said they wont in the past… but it seems relatively obvious.

So, would you rather they updated to you software with a few bugs in it? Or wait a little longer?

Hi Steve, the Android 4.0 update for the HTC Sensation is currently undergoing testing and will be released to customers shortly after it has been approved. Although you might hear about updates from around the world, it’s important to understand that although handsets may share the same name, there are numerous different hardware and software variants.

As an example for the Sensation, we have a variant that works on our new 850Mhz network whereas the rest of the world has a variant tuned to the 900MHz band. I’ve written a more detailed series of blog posts on the Android Software Journey that I hope answers some of the questions you have. You can find the articles here: http://blog.vodafone.com.au/blog/the-android-software-journey-part-1/

Rest assured that we fully understand how important these updates are to you and others, and are working as hard as we can to get them deployed. However, a lot of work goes into ensuring the update is suitable for release and we need to ensure appropriate steps are taken to deliver an update that meets our own expectations of quality and also Australian regulations for telecommunications devices.

I have both the galaxy s2 and galaxy tab 10.1v. The lack of information offered by Vodafone is just poor. ICS has been “testing” for a while now, yes I understand the process and what is required in order to be released. But I must say the other telecos offer a better level of transparency. I have noticed by Optus & Telstra have offered a release time frame of early April. With a qualifier of this is subject to change pending of bugs/issues found. But we will let you know. Is Vodafone considering offering this level of commitment to their customers? As you wouldn’t have to reply to so many posts because all customers know where they stand with their updates and are happy to know a rough SLA subject to change then just a generic testing stage which seems endless “testing stage”. If you keep your customers informed they will be less inclined to move to another company that willing to offer more information and offer a better level of transparency and as a customer you know where you stand. 100% of the time

Hi Jay & Silent Bob, in the past we offered rough ETAs and people made their feelings very well known when those ETAs were not met. Even with all the caveats in the world, we prefer not to give false hope or set incorrect expectations regarding release. As a 10.1v customer, you yourself would have an acute understanding of the kind of roadblocks that can be faced regarding software updates.

As far as transparency goes, we notify customers when an update is being prepared for us, when it has been delivered to us, when it has entered testing, and when it’s approved. We’re also committed to providing a weekly update on Wednesdays so that our customers know that the information they have in front of them is the most up to date and accurate info available.

We’re constantly reviewing our communications strategy around software updates in a gradual, iterative fashion and take all feedback on board. While we may offer ETAs in the future, right now we don’t have any concrete plans to do so. Thanks again for taking the time to provide your feedback.

Alternatively, you can register your details on our pre-registration site and we’ll SMS you when it’s available: http://vodafone.com.au/personal/android/home/ice-cream-sandwich/index.htm

    Hi Kieran

Dont the manufacturers test the updates before they are released? Because you guys test them as well, which means they are unnecessarily tested twice. Could you instead collaborate with them better, or view their test results? Or you could do what other telcos such as Telstra do – give the customers the update straight from the manufacturer with a disclaimer saying that they can install at their own risk? I would prefer this system as it allows faster updates, and enables Vodafone to employ fewer people so that they can focus on better service. That way you can blame the manufacturer if anything goes wrong.

Hi Gdog, as the supplier of these devices we (and not the manufacturer) are the ones ultimately responsible for the delivery of software updates to the devices we sell and must ensure that they continue to meet Australian standards. This is an industry-wide practice and all Australian telecommunications providers perform thorough testing and certification of new devices and updates to existing devices that they have sold.

We also believe by ensuring the software updates that manufacturers release to our customers are of a high quality that we are able to provide the best possible on-device experience to our customers. You can read more on the reasons why we test, and some examples of issues we’ve uncovered in the testing process here: http://blog.vodafone.com.au/blog/the-android-software-journey-part-3/

I have spoken to representatives from other telecommunications companies in Australia and they have informed me that this is not the case. They push the updates from the manufacturers straight to devices they have already supplied to customers, such as the HTC Sensation, which has already received the Ice Cream Sandwich update on Telstra. Couldn’t Vodafone collaborate more with manufacturers such as HTC to view their tests that have already been performed and send requirements for additional tests so that they meet Australian standards? This way only one set of testing is done, and the customers do not have to wait as long.

Hi Gdog, I can categorically confirm that the framework we follow for testing and certification of new devices, and software updates to existing devices is undertaken by all major telecommunications providers in Australia. You are however correct in stating that the updates are pushed to handsets by the manufacturers, as they have the infrastructure in place for the physical deployment of software updates.

To the best of my knowledge, the Android 4.0 update for the HTC Sensation is not currently available for any devices sold by local carriers here in Australia. That being said, if somebody has imported their device from overseas the update path would be different and the update may have been made available to them independent of Australian carriers.

The testing we perform is vital to ensuring our customers have a positive experience with their devices in all situations and circumstances. We fully recognise how eager our customers are to get their hands on these updates, and we do our utmost to deliver them in a speedy fashion. However, it is ultimately our responsibility to ensure the device remains adherent to Australia’s regulatory requirements for telecommunications devices and meets our expectations of an enjoyable on-device experience.

I am assuming that because the HTC Sensation series is a Vodafone exclusive, Vodafone will update the handsets much quicker? Just like the HTC Velocity 4G was updated by Telstra over 3 weeks ago. I am hoping that it will be launched this week, hopefully tomorrow.

Hi mark, we have approved the update and notified Nokia, the roll-out is now up to them. At this stage they have not communicated a specific date for release but I will ask the question for you. Nokia Care may also be able to provide you with more information.

Hi Stewart, thanks for your feedback. Unfortunately we can only test the update, not add new features. I’ve passed your suggestion onto Samsung for you.

READ PREVIOUS COMMENTS BEFORE MAKING A COMMENT!

OBVIOUSLY IF IT STATES “CURRENTLY IN TESTING” ITS IN TESTING! AND THEY DON’T KNOW WHEN ITS GOING TO BE READY.

WHO CARES WHAT OTHER TELCOS ARE DOING, THIS IS VODAFONE, THEY HAVE A PROCESS TO FOLLOW, ACCEPT IT AND MOVE ON! IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT, GO ELSEWHERE AND PAY MORE FOR YOUR SERVICE.

Hi Saaby, the hardware variant that we sell is the Samsung i9100t, not i9100. Delivery of software for different hardware variants follow different schedules. In fact, there are nearly fifteen different handsets around called “GALAXY S II”. Rest assured we fully understand how important these updates are and are working hard to grant approval to this release.
