Vodafone to expand mobile coverage, adding 1,800 new base stations

Vodafone to expand mobile coverage, adding 1,800 new base stations

Bill Morrow, Chief Executive at Vodafone:

“Vodafone has a comprehensive network plan. We are building on the work we have undertaken over the last twelve months to progressively enhance coverage, increase speed and significantly improve customer experience.

“We are expanding the Vodafone network with the addition of 1,800 new base stations to improve coverage at selected locations in all capital cities and regional areas across Australia.

Sydney, May 3 2012: Vodafone customers will experience wider coverage with Vodafone planning to add more than 1,800 new base stations to its network.

Vodafone has already started incorporating more than 900 base stations into its network from the 3 mobile network and will draw on an expanded network joint venture with Optus, subject to ACCC approval, to access around 400 Optus base station sites and a joint agreement to build 500 new, shared sites over the next four years.

Bill Morrow, Chief Executive of Vodafone, said: “Vodafone is committed to developing a network that provides excellent coverage for our customers. We’ve listened to our customers and we’re responding to their demands by delivering a better, faster, more reliable network across Australia.”

“The expansion to our coverage is a significant step forward and is part of our evolution toward higher performance network speeds that will ultimately lead to our introduction of 4G. The key benefit of the expanded network joint venture will be that it increases the depth of coverage to Vodafone customers.”

Under the proposed extended network joint venture, which includes provision for a roaming agreement with Optus to commence in April 2013, Vodafone customers will gain access to hundreds of additional base stations in outer metropolitan and regional areas, increasing Vodafone’s network coverage to reach 96% of the Australian population.

Vodafone has invested more than $1 billion in its new network, making significant progress on its continuing rollout, with more than 1,100 new 850MHz 3G sites now operating and an additional 400 new 850MHz 3G sites scheduled to come online in the next few months.

Vodafone’s new 850MHz 3G network layer is already delivering improved indoor and outdoor coverage, providing important new coverage to reduce network blackspots and dropped calls, while also improving the experience for customers using internet-enabled smartphones, tablets and mobile broadband devices.

Oh great, so even though the Three Mobile base already have access to “96% population coverage via Telstra GSM Roaming (and 3GIS/Mega 3G Roaming handset dependent) ” which is much more than the VHA Vodafone customers that only have 94.5% via GSM and 94% via 3G dual band, that also means I guess it means that VHA and Telstra could not come to an agreement to extend the previous H3GA / Telstra roaming deal.

Will this new VHA / Optus agreement also include access to the new Optus 3G 900MHz metro network they are rolling out or just extending the current JV 2100MHz metro network only …

Its also sad to see that its again being limited to 96%, while i can understand that Optus would not want to give Vodafone full access to their entire 97.4% pop coverage (Dual band 3G) the deal should of at least been set at 97% pop coverage. Also will it be like the current Three Mobile deal with Telstra where voice, SMS, MMS and Planet 3 is not chrged extra but mobile data (external) is charged ontop of any current mobile internet pack the subscriber has?

Anyway, now that VHA have finally announced that they are indeed (well to kick off with 900 base stations of the 1,350 on offer they can use, we also know that Telstra has started to roll out from their allocation of 1,350 base stations into their NextG network) starting to incorporate their part of the 3GIS network into Vodafone 2100MHz, what does that mean for those remaining on Three Mobile … when will VHA announce what will happen to the current roaming deal with Telstra …

Unfortunately, we don’t have any further information on the details of the roaming part of this announcement yet.

We’ll announce more / full details closer to the date that the roaming provisioning was set for (April 2013).

    Hi

3 still has better coverage than Vodafone and no issues. This is one of the reasons we did not change from 3 though they wanted us to move. Also it is a shame that Vodafone could not come into a deal with Telstra at least my 3 phone has coverage for now when my Vodafone is completely dead. Still I carry 2 phones as I can rely on VODA due to the coverage.

My area has apparently been updated, VIC 3222, but we’ve noticed nothing whatsoever in improved signal. Our phones are less than 2 years old, HTC legends, 3G. I’m told that the improvements are to the 4G network, is this true? Must be, because the coverage here is woeful. I’ve had enough and will be looking into getting out of my contract.
