Vodafone’s 4G tests have kicked off in Sydney

Our teams are busy getting ready for the launch of 4G. We’re really excited about it, and we hope you are too.

It’s early days, but we wanted to keep you up to date on our 4G progress as we prepare to deliver faster speeds on the Vodafone network.

Over the past few months, our network teams have been conducting their first round of ‘calls’ (network lingo for testing data speeds and MMS services, and making sure the handover for voice calls to the nearest network is seamless) on Vodafone’s 4G network in Sydney’s Eastern suburbs.

To run these tests, we’ve powered up Vodafone’s 4G technology in Alexandria, Bronte and Randwick with 10MHz bandwidth – we’ll be operating our 4G network in Sydney on 20MHz of bandwidth when we launch.

We conducted our initial calls at our 4G base station in Alexandria and on the streets of Sydney’s Eastern suburbs using category 3 devices. The calls for voice, mms and sms went off without a hitch. For our speed tests, we used speedtest.net app, where we recorded super fast download test speeds ranging between 60Mbps to 67Mbps and upload test in the 25-30Mbps range. Don’t take our word for it – see the screenshot from  one of our data speed tests below.

Test speeds vs. Actual speeds

The speeds we’ve been referring to are ‘test’ speeds, as the testing environment is unique in that we’re the only ones using  the 4G network. Similar to driving a car, if you’re on a road with no traffic or speed restrictions, it’s fair to say you’d be travelling much faster.  A mobile network is much the same. Once we add all the potential speed bumps outside of the testing environment, we will really be able to see the speeds that can be achieved, and this is how we calculate ‘actual’ speeds. The type of things which can affect speeds are: congestion; user numbers; local conditions; hardware; software; download source; and, general internet trafficOn Vodafone 4G, we’re expecting actual speeds between 2-40Mbps.

At launch, in 4G areas with a category 3 device (e.g. iPhone 5, Nokia Lumia 820) we are expecting typical download speeds of between 2Mbps-40Mbps.

With those speeds, you could potentially download a 10-song album of music in 10 seconds – around 10-15 times quicker than on our 3G network. Ah, the 4G possibilities!

Over the next few weeks, as we power up more 4G sites around Australia, we’ll be conducting thousands of tests just like this to ensure Vodafone’s 4G network will not just hum, it will sing.

Keep following this blog for more info from the Vodafone Network Team.

Cheers,

Allen, on behalf of Vodafone’s 4G Network Team

Bandwidth, what the fuss?!

The easiest way to explain bandwidth is to compare it to a highway. A 20MHz highway will have twice the number of lanes to carry traffic than a 10MHz highway, meaning if you’re a tablet or smartphone user, you’re likely to experience less traffic congestion on a bigger, 20MHz highway.

Vodafone is the only telco in Australia to operate 20MHz highways in all states, giving it a future-proof edge over competitors. Over the course of the year, when more “Category 4” devices become available (smartphones built especially to perform at even faster speeds on 20MHz highways), customers who have these phones in hand will really fly!

We’ve seen some download test speeds in our labs up to 150Mbps. Whoa!

      Nick & Team:
Have you removed all the other speedbumps on the new 4-lane highway?
I’m thinking about backhaul (not sure how many 60 Mbps or 150 Mbps sessions you’d be able to handle per tower); latencies (high speeds won’t work for me in Perth if you send my data across the nullarbor all the time), coverage etc…
I can go faster on a 2 lane well built and maintained highway than I can on a 4 lane one with potholes… I hope you’ve got it right this time – we deserve it!

It’s not even a ‘screenshot’, it’s a photo of a phone. you can tell by the slightly off angle of the image. Makes it slightly harder to fake, but not impossible. Also, no way to know it’s not on the Telstra network either… But I don’t think it’s fake. Why go through the effort when they could say nothing at all!

Looking forward to more news on the roll out. Thanks Vodafone for being more open.

    A couple of questions:

1 – Will i be able to bring along any LTE phone from other carriers/out-right buy to use on the network? I know that this is sometime restricted.

2 – Will VF be increasing the data plans for phones capable of using the updated bandwidth, rather than requiring us to purchase extra data on top of our contract price?

3 – Any tentative roll out dates around the country?

You will be able to BYO phone. As long as it is compatible and not locked to another network.

We don’t have any dates for the release of 4G yet, as soon as we know, you’ll know.

We’re still working on our 4G plans so I have no news about what will be included. We’ve still got a lot of work and testing to do!

I note that later revisions on the HSPA+ spec have theoretical speeds twice that of LTE cat 5, do you see an upgrade path for current HSDPA services to Rev 11 HSPA+ alongside LTE (which seems like a lot of spectrum), and secondly do you expect HSPA+ to eventually meet IMT-Advanced requirements?

Let us know your project planned date for 4G network testing in Melbourne.

You mentioned “Category 4 smartphones built especially to perform at even faster speeds on 20MHz highways”.
What is a category 4 device?
    Is a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 already a “category 4 device” ?

What do you mean by EVEN faster? EVEN faster than what? Ordinary 4G or just faster than 3G?
    Please clarify.

    Look forward to your reply.

Galaxy S-III and Note-II are LTE-Cat3 and pretty much every other LTE phone and device is Cat3.
Cat3 is fine as they are 100Mbps.
Cat4 devices are not out yet, they can go up to 150Mbps but require the carrier to have more spectrum (at least 20Mhz) to get decent speeds, expect Cat4 devices later this year.

untill last sunday, coverage improvement map was showing that this is being done in 1 month. Now does not show anything to be improved in less than 4 months.

this has been going on since last 18 months when I moved with vodafone from 3. Every time they say its going to happen in next 3 months. I was glad when improvement coverage map was showing 1 month to improve, and now even that is gone.

Also i have found vodafone customer service has become arogant and unhelpfull over the last few months

Its shame and I m decided to move on if it does not improve in one week

What’s the point of saying you have 20MHz of spectrum if you don’t have the money to use it?

We all know that Vodafone doesn’t have the backhaul to support 60mbps at most sites. We know that Telstra have twice as many towers as Vodafone in competition areas and therefore use spectrum much more efficiently.

Oh, and Telstra started testing 4G three years ago.

      Hey Brent,

Vodafone is very focused on network as a priority and is investing more this year than any year previously. We are committed to rolling out 4G later this year as more handsets become available and consumer interest increases. While interest in 4G is growing, it is yet to be a primary driver for the majority of Australians – our focus is on providing a consistently good 3G experience as a priority.

Uh oh! This sounds like when Vodafone put their head in the sand and ignored 3G data in 2005-2010 to their peril in 2010-2011. I can see Vodafail #2 in 2014 on its way when 4G is released but there is no backhaul to support it, lots of 4G devices and Telstra and Optus are able to provide low cost high quota plans because of the infrastructure they sit on.

I note you have just slipped in this little sentence that announces that Vodafone seems to be massaging last years grand promise that Vodafone will be activating 4G by 1st qtr. 2013. ie. the end of March, about 3 weeks away !!!

Tell us that its not so! Tell us that you will keep this promise to activate 4G for people that have brought the hype you announced last year. Those that bought the 4G capable SGN2 smartphone for example. Later this year means that that they will not be able to use 4G a year after buying it,

Tell us this is not another example of Vodafone failing to live up to its marketing promises.

Look forward to not your denials of promises but your true explanations of whats gone wrong………….

Yes, it is sounding like the promises I had in December 2010 that 2G congestion problems would be fixed within “days” and 3G would be rolled out by January 2011 at my home. It actually took until November 2012, only 22 months late. Will 4G be 22 months late as well?

voda = joke. No one believes voda about 4g happening in 2013 – we’ve had many promised over the last 2 years with very few actually being deivered. its like you have given up competing – and banking on laziness of the remaining customers to not switch to telstra or optus.

Just an idea if you did decide to introduce 4g plans:

Instead of different allowances for Voice/SMS and a seperate allowance for date, why not introduce a Cap that has a dollar cap value that combines all 3 elements, because some people use more data than calls, so it might be more beneficial, and less chance for excess usage – especially with the bandwidth of 4g mobile phones.

    Just a thought :) .

Sounds like a great idea! I can’t promise anything but I’ve passed it on to the right team to take onboard.

Have you got one of our 4G handsets ready to go? The tests kicked off in Sydney, is that where you are?

Yes I have an iPhone 5 but only a Pocket Wifi Pro on the old $49 combo cap. Would love to see if the data could be shared between the two devices. Although I would upgrade the pocket wifi pro when the Category 5 4g version is released. :) . Looking foward to also the 3.5g upgrade in the Pennant Hills area (2120). Any idea when that is happenning? :) . I hope I don’t have to move to a new 4g plan. :)

    Hi Allen and Team,
(I repost as I was posting to Nichole on SG Note2 blog incorrectly, Although thanks to Nichole for the prompt responses.)

Nichole thank you for confirming that the 4G rollout project plan is on target and you have now confirmed that you WILL have completed the rollout within the next 6 weeks ie. 31st March, Can’t wait to be a first user, Happy to help with any live user pilot testing if you need it,

What surprises me a little is that Vodafone doesn’t have a project plan that shows what you will do regards 4G LTE rollout past 31st March? ie the activations and locations of 4G past Sydney area.
That seems incredible for a large International organisation, and maybe a little mickey mouse to say the least. Like the local Primary school mothers club organising the mothers roster and rolls / pies ordering for the next couple of months.
Microsoft Project is a very cheap and a easy to learn project tool. Maybe you could download a copy and use that for the 4G rollout. Its also relatively cheap and a quick whip around the office for some loose change would do it, MS Project makes it very easy for the whole team to keep in touch with the project plan at a glance.

Hope this helps and speeds up the 4G delivery.

Exactly which phone did you guys use the speedtest, net app on? From the screenshot it looks like it has been tested on an Andriod device. As far as I know the only 4G Andriod phone that Vodafone currently has is the HTC One SV. And from the screenshot it doesn’t look like a phone that is running sense. So are you guys testing with a phone that hasn’t been released on Vodafone yet? and back to my original question, which phone is it?

    This is SO exciting!
Cannot WAIT for 4G!! Hoping it helps free up the 3G network as well, because in Adelaide the vodafone network can get choked up pretty quickly and Edge is pretty darn slow!
Just go to any footy match at AAMI Stadium and you can’t even get a call or text out sometimes, let alone use the internet (on a related note I hope you guys consider putting some temporary towers around AAMI this year for game nights).

I live in Adelaide and would LOVE to do some 4G testing!!! I mean, if you are getting us civillians to test at some point… I work in the CBD as well so that would be ideal.

Within these 3 months, network is bad as usual. Data network is jammed frequently. Started from Monday, my work area is suddenly fall to a outage zone, having problems not just for data, also the essential phone service.
Vodafone, if you have told me that 4G will not roll out until May or June or further, I wouldn’t have to sign a 4G contract for a 4G phone in December!!!

Hmm interested to see how voda will handle a 4G network when they couldn’t even handle a 3G one. I’m with Vodafone at the moment and the dropouts and dead zones are still terrible.

Another important question, rather than speed, is how wide is the coverage? There’s no point having the supposedly fastest network if it only covers a small percentage of metro.

So far I am on the verge of leaving Vodafone due to the crappiness of the mobile internet. I had better speeds using 28k dial up 12 years ago. What is going to guarantee customers will see an improvement in service once the switch to 4G is done? Is it going to be on par at least with other providers networks? At the moment vodafones 3G network is horrible to say the least.

We’re pretty confident Deivido once 4G is officially rolled out, customers with 4G capable devices are going to see some exciting new data speeds and wicked internet connectivity. But it certainly sounds like we need to look into what’s going on with your 3G services at the moment cause ancient dial up speeds is not what we had intended for you.

If you dont have anything definate yet, that would indicate that the funds haven’t been committed to the project/upgrade. Its not hard to project manage a 4 G roll-out. So at this stage its still ‘marketing hype’.. probably in response to the Class-action suite filed against vodafone (interestingly enough your ‘planned’ 4G announcement only came after the class-action suite being filed.

Well thats all the marketing hype… lets get down to business and performance. Let’s just say Vodafone have not been very good at delivering promises. What we would like to see is a planned roll-out (yes.. dates) for your 4G network… performance guarantees (yes.. Guarantees!). Given your past performance, its unlikely that Vodafone will have the fastest 4G network, not to mention all the other problems…. latency, routing, multiplexing etc.. I’m thinking Perth wont see 4G till around 2014++

    Hi guys,
I just came to this page (a bit late) after a holiday in SE Asia where it seemed that their Edge networks were faster and more reliable for download than the 3G here. I had unlimited 3G and Edge access, as well as unlimited free wi-fi in their location shopping centres for about $30 per month.

Voda almost lost me at Christmas due to coverage issues and Optus’ $130 unlimited business plan which included unlimited 4G data. If I hadn’t been mid contract with $1,000 break costs, I would have switched in a heartbeat. Optus have since dropped that deal to bring themselves “into line with the competition”

The lesson for you from that is …… 4G data speeds are great, but – if you don’t allow the volume to use it, you will just annoy customers with expensive “over cap” data charges. It also gives you a great advertising image of Teltsra’s 4G rocket getting pulled up short by a chain and an Optus Hippo starving to death on an inadequate food supply.

You should also look at offering free wi-fi in shopping centres as a part of your top bundles, get in discussions with Westfield, Stockland, GPT and Centro management.

Happy to hear that the network is progressing but can you please hurry up with the release of the LTE network as this is the reason i decided to stay with Vodafone. I no you want to get it right but there is no way that it will be a flawless transition as all new technologies hit road bumps. Isn’t it time you got more people on the network now so you can test it out even more. After all the rollout for this has being going for several months and the waiting is getting annoying. Pleas release it nationally already. Haven’t we waited long enough Telstra and the other provides have had there networks out for several months. you should of been able to learn from there mistakes by now and have implemented ways to deal with the issues. Please release the network we have waited long enough. Vodafone customers have been left behind for to long. Please rectify this as us as loyal customers deserve to be using a stable and competitive network.

Is the 1800 I have on my phone different to the 1800 in the 4G? I ask because if I upgrade my phone here in Oz, I need to make sure it’s going to be compatible with the spectrum (frequency) in the USA with my T-Mobile carrier there also supplying 4G. For your phone to work on 4G it needs to be compatible with 4G AND the frequency of the 4G network, Greg. Our 4G network will run on the 1800 frequency, for your phone to work on our 4G network it will need to be compatible with 4G in the 1800 MHz frequency.

If your phone is compatible with 1800 3G it doesn’t mean it will work on the 4G network- it specifically needs to be 4G compatible. The HTC One X is not 4G compatible so it will not work on any 4G network regardless of the frequency. You can check out our 4G ready phones here: http://www.vodafone.com.au/aboutvodafone/network/4g. You’ll need to contact your carrier in the US to have a chat about what you’ll need to be aware of for their 4G network.

You’re right Tre and we won’t make promises for things that we don’t have information on, we’ll be straight up with the details that we have on hand.

This is the reason why we say “plan” and not “we will” because at this stage we don’t have a rollout date for the 4G network, the testing is still ongoing.

If you have any issues that you’d like us to look into for you then just drop us a post on the Community Forum here and the Help and Support crew can check it out.

    Cheers,

Me 2. My wife’s contracts is up in 3 months and mine in 6. My iPad is on Telstra and I am forever having to carry it around to check bus timetables because my phone just won’t connect especially around burwood NSW. When I signed up I complained and they said upgrades happening in a month. 18 months later and nothing. It’s why I’m extremely doubtful about their planned 4g upgrade for which their is no apparent info on. If they really were close they would start it in a couple of areas.
